Thank you for your honesty. Not only it was an interesting perspective, but being that you and I are about the same age (based on a time-table you gave, I'm a year older than you), I too understand the pressures to give up this "frivolous" hobby -- and somehow people considering it more frivolous than driving up debt to buy crap we don't truly want or to get wasted at the pub or watch daft reality TV, gossip endlessly, obsess with social media, etc., etc. We all pick our poison, so to speak...if it can be considered poison at all? II enjoyed hearing your stories about how games helped you get through your life, especially the resonation between yourself as a father and Kratos as a father in God of War. We take care of our responsibilities, and then we step into other worlds and do things we can never do in real life and that's alright, because it's participatory and stokes the imagination and yes it's sometimes escape, but these are the things that can genuinely *help* us at different periods in our lives, and who is anyone to judge that? Thank you for sharing.

It's hard to put into words what gaming has meant to my life. It was a safe heaven from a broken and violet home as a child (especially at your house with Mac which felt like my real home/family). It lead me to my first wife and ok that didn't work out but from that nightmare my son was born the greatest achievement of my life. I can honestly say that I have had better relationships with NPCs than half the people I know. It was a safe haven in an unsafe world and has kept me from imploding more times than I can easily count. Do I need none gamers to get that sure it would be nice but I don't need it; because you do and the legions of gamers out there. Keep on gaming my brother and always remember that I got your back in the real world or in a PVP match in Destiny 👍

Making money playing golf is seen as an amazing and outstanding profession. Making money playing basketball or baseball is seen as being an incredible athlete. Being an actor is seen as famous and extremely sought after. But being a professional gamer in any regard? "Grow up." "Get a real job." "What adult plays games still?" This is insane. You are either an athlete with professional gaming, or an entertainer that brings thpysands of people joy. Not only has playing games helped me through the entirety of my childhood, through hardships and low income situation after another but watching people play has helped me as an adult too. Back to back shifts at work? I can relax at home with KZitem watching someone with a like passion. Break ups? How can I be sad watching someone else scream in fear or anger at a game. I will never be an entertainer. But I could not respect the people that do more. Here's hoping this channel keeps going for many years. I'll sit here through hard and easy times to watch.

Funny because I was watching the Uncharted movie with my gf and my mother and I saw the airplane scene and thought to myself "this looks and feels just like any other blockbuster action scene ever" and then I said out loud "it's so much better to interact with this scene in the game than to watch it in the movie, you're literally there hanging on the flying cargo and shooting bad guys, it's very immersive and now adapted to a movie it feels totally lifeless." People really dont understand the difference it makes to be able to be part and play a role in a story. Like, I can watch every horror movie and it won't do anything to me but I can't play Dead Space or PT without pausing every 30s because of how scary and atmospheric it is.

I found the Dark Souls games at a time when I was dealing with a lot of heaviness that came with being a new foster parent. We had just taken our second child in who was severely delayed, and also knew that the first little girl that we had taken in was about to leave after 10 months in our home. The Souls series became that escape from reality that I needed to reset. I also stopped feeling that sense of shame about being a gamer. I see games as the meta art form for me personally. They can take the greatest things about books, movies, traditional art, music, etc. and blend them all into a fully immersive experience that can be revisited and reinterpreted over time. If only non-gamers knew what they were missing.

@@Onos I just do it for mostly fitness now, still quite fun and gets you going. But back to the point on non-gamers thinking its a waste of time and all that. They just don't experience it like we do, for many gamers it is the escape factor (like you said). But I can also say that it does improve people's lives in initially unforeseen ways. Example: Elon Musk claims that video games made him what he is today because of the problem-solving in games thats involved. He's a big deal now as he's one of the top billionaires in the world, all because he learnt how to tackle problems due to learning the framework of doing so in a video game. Personally, I play a lot of games, but I also play on simulators eg. DCS world which taught me a lot about flying aircraft and dropping laser guided bombs on moving targets 25,000 feet below my aircraft all the way to the ground. In some ways they can give you life skills which you can bring into the real world. Just a note its not something I'm probably going to end up doing but it has spurred my interest in aviation and piloting with the hope that I can one day get a private pilots license. To conclude, its most certainly not a waste of time if you're having fun with it and it benefits your happiness (as well as giving you skills which you can use in your life). And like you said in the clip don't listen to the naysayers, they're full of sh*t. I'm 33 years old and I reckon I still will play games up to when I'm an elderly person I can be sure of that.

I bought a PS4 shortly before the birth of my daugher, the first gaming equipment in years, after I took a break from games for about eight years (mostly due to work, but also because of a lack of proper hardware). In my parental leave I played stuff like GTA V, but most importantly: The Last of Us PS4 remastered. That game was for me what God of War was for you. The other one, the fun game, was Bomberman on PC when two friends and me sat in front of my 386 for nights and nights, screaming in joy. Actually, Civ 2 Gold was another friendship game that was very important, planning our way to world domination together. I totally feel what you say. I work 40 hours, have other "hobbies" such as playing guitar and reading, and I'm close with kids; but gaming is MY time, and it's how I relate to the world. It gives me hope, passion, love, inspiration, and it keeps me going. Nice video. It is odd that playing computer games seems to be a hobby that still needs to be justified and is challenged as a waste of life whereas most others are not. Unfortunately though I don't think it is necessarily a 'non-gamer' issue - there is even a divide within the gaming community (a generalisation but typically those mainstream game players vs those who may enjoy a more niche title. Take CoD vs Baldurs Gate as an example). From my view, i've realised I need to be unapologetic in how or why I play games rather than reacting to having to justify myself. Just a thought.

I found games were there when people weren't, having something to sink into at the hight of depression and similar. Few things helped me deal with anger better than red faction guerilla. Nothing takes my mind of stress better than the sims series (and make me poor but thats a EA standard) and few things made me happier than chilling on the nioh series. Getting a little fed up with people pointing fingers at the games industry for many bad things that people do instead of looking at their rules and situations

Totally agree - that's pretty much why I made this video. Things do seem to be improving slowly, but I wanted to address the stigma. Also, have you seen the series called "house of cards" - there are a number of times when the President in the show is playing computer games to relax after a sh1tty day - love it

@@Onos ha didnt know that, that makes me more inclined to try it. I'll hunt it down. I'm definitely noticing changes but that said ita been awhile since we've had a tragedy blamed on a game so hope that doesn't undo the slow progress. The E-sports thing and twitter has done a lot of work for making gaming seem less childish gor those not really in it. Kinda like studio ghibli making anime look less childish, but in a less artful way

Those saying that gaming is a waste or bad for your mental health, are the same ones that would find nothing wrong with sitting back and watching a Bachelor marathon. Clearly, the latter is not my cup of tea, but if that's what you like to do to relax/release stress, more power to you. As Onos said though, I think it's important to take care of reality first, but we also need to make time for personal hobbies.

Computer games, the people that say they are childish, violent and lacking any intellectual property, haven't really got much idea, and probably have never played video games. I came to gaming quite late, and am now in my early 60s,and will be playing games till my last breath hopefully. I also read books, old, style, listen to music. Like all (entertainment) there's rubbish, but the best is fantastic, it can be fun, it can be complex, or can help you to navigate through life's sometimes terrible problems, because if you haven't experienced the unfortunate above, you haven't really lived. Gaming for me sometimes is an escape, sometimes it's helped with cognitive reasoning, sometimes it's just playing a fantastic game and you are at a point where you think, Wow people who don't like gaming are really missing out on experiences, that sit alongside the rest of my life. This post is way late and probably no one will read it, but agree 100% with your comments. Hope life will be good for you.

For me, I have found that drugs, porn and video games just fill a void in my life. Ever since my mom lifted me up and held me to play the arcade game Stargate Defender, I was hooked. But everything in moderation. I'm 49 now and indulge in gaming every once in a while. Now, nothing beats a good book.

Gaming involves puzzle solving, analytical & strategizing skills which is far more than you can say for staring at a tv show. It has been shown that gamers have higher IQ's & crime levels drop when new games are released...because people are busy playing games, not out committing crimes. Anyone who suggests any societal problem is due to gaming is trying to distract the populace from the real issues which are always financial inequity & social injustice-the issues they DON'T want to address, usually because people who accuse gaming of causing problems are benefactors of financial inequity & social injustice.

I feel ya that it is true even in todays world where we have esports, which btw i cannot call someone who plays a vidoe game 12 hours a day a damn athleat maybe it is just me. However sit on your ass playing games does not make someone a sports person, small rant aside there, if you take gym serious alot of people will be like why spend all the time and energy into being able to lift heavier weights they ask. Yet they will also ask hey can you can help me move this piano from my passed grandmother, strenght is fun and nice and very useful. As somene who takes gym serious not as serious i as used to cause i dont need to, i found out stressing less about my gym performance and how often i have to hit the gym litterally made me a better lifter and caused positive body changes cause i did not stress about it and thus not cause my hormones to go whacko. Gaming helps the down time and relax after gym, i always play when i get home because mentally i get into a certain head space and playing games helps getting out of quicker and thus allows for better sleep. And for gym taking it serious it makes me more healthy and stronger, and gaming helps with that aswell on top of i get to play with friends and discuss games with friends and i get to form relations with other people i otherwise would not have known or met.

@@Onos Well it is not the amount of time you put in, it is the quality time you put in. Meaning you can put in alot of time doing alot of sets, and get nothing done or put in a handful for sets for a muscle groupe and really push those sets. I am personally so close to be able to bench 150kgs for 3 reps, it is my 2020 end of the year goal. point is putting in good working sets matters a hell of lot more than putting in a bunch of sets that does not really do much for you. Same advice i give to the "kids" and i say kids even tho im only 30, but i got alot of time under my belt in the gym. And i now being a parent is no easy task, i am a semi parent so to speak i have some younger friends, that i act as a mentor for and both have had absent dads and thus i kinda act like a father figure.

Most people are dump as shit and just saying thinks they dont understand about stuff they never get touched with. The main problem about the wish to be a youtuber or streamer and earn money with this as a job is the really hard competition. And to become an official Partner of the Plattforms is ridiculos high, especially since youtube puts ads into not monitirsed videos, it is even harder to find new followers and supporters on new channels.

So I tried to be nice about it, in particular because of her personal history. But I no longer had any interest. I am not looking for mass approval of the medium. I honestly dont care. But if she likes me in part for my art, a sensibility she says she lacks. Then perhaps accept what you cannot understand since I might see something she does. Ah well. No loss.
