Southern folks are generally more outgoing, talkative, generous with their time, possessions, opinions, recipes, gatherings, and taking time to help each other and their neighbors. That’s not to say that these traits are not shared by folks from the North or West...but southerners are known for their hospitality and manners. So, everyday things take on that flavor and influence. Simply going to the grocery store (market) to pick up a can of beans can turn into a 3-hour excursion spontaneously because you meet up with folks, converse with them to catch up on what is going on in their life (gossip about others...in the south we call it ‘sharing’😏), share recipes, arrange for future outings (“we should go out to lunch tomorrow!”), watch a buggy (basket, trollie, cart) while a mom cares for her babies, help grandma 👵 or invalid reach for the top or bottom shelf, get lost in a rearranged store or hunt down an item that has new product packaging or appearance, converse with those in line and your check out clerk, file, fiddle and adhere to coupon redemption rules, pick up & put back items you accidentally knocked over...finding a cart that rolls, put away bags and cart, realize you forgot a few things, go back in to purchase, check out the deli and remember you need to buy a greeting card, read the cards for 30 minutes, get a phone call from Aunt Tilly asking if they have French’s Fried Onions for her casserole 🥘 and Miracle Whip for your mom...at checkout get stamps for your letters, pay the light and water bills at the customer service, buy a lotto ticket, check your tickets from last week...get back to car, see a friend talk for 45-minutes, your ice cream turns into milkshake in your car...help someone park their car straight between the lines, return a cart someone left next to your car (rude!😡). Go home with your can of beans and other groceries, drop off stuff with Aunt Tilly and mom (2 stops), get gas, check mail, go home. This would not be an unusual ‘quick trip’ hijacked by southern life...😉
