Here I'm sharing a few things that bring me peace and joy during the months of autumn. Sometimes autumn makes us feel a bit under the weather or slightly more sad than usual, and now that it's November and it's getting colder - I think adding some mindful activities to your day may be helpful.
Spend a day with me walking through autumnal woodland, foraging for sweet chestnuts and roasting them and preparing my garden for winter as I share a few activities which make me feel better in autumn.
ROASTED CHESTNUTS:
Score your chestnuts with a sharp knife or scissors, then soak in hot water for about 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180C/ 355F and roast for about 20 minutes. If your chestnuts are bigger they may need more time, if they're smaller they may need less time. 20 minutes is a good average time to set, and after that check them with a fork or toothpick - if it comes in easily, then they're ready.
Remove from the oven and place in a bowl covered with a slightly damp towel. Leave for 5 minutes then peel while still warm. It's best to take one chestnut out at a time and keep the rest covered as they peel much easier when warm.
How to differentiate sweet chestnuts and conkers (horse chestnuts):
Sweet chestnuts are covered in very sharp, long, thin needles on the entire outer shell, while conkers have a smoother surface with occasional triangular needles which are not as sharp and much shorter.
On the inside, conkers are much bigger and can have quite an irregular shape. Sweet chestnuts have a teardrop-like shape with a little fringe on one side (a little hairy bit). Conkers don't have that.
Sweet chestnuts taste a bit like a potato, slightly sweet and nutty, while conkers are bitter and toxic. They can be used for making soap though, but please don't eat them if you're not sure!
