All very good points! Another point on my inspection list for C5s to look at the oil pressure when the car is running for the notorious pressure sensor failure. I also have been looking at the battery tray area because I’ve heard some batteries have known to leak acid and drip down into the ECM below it and just ruin it, I think the Napa batteries were the ones known for doing that. Another one I also note is to check the condition of the heads up display, because if that’s going out, it ain’t an easy fix either haha. Looking forward to hearing that new exhaust setup 👍🏼

Just saw your vid and it's a lot of good info for C5 owners. You've told people things here that a car salesman would never disclose, even if he knew these things. I have a mildly built Z06 with 62K on it and i'm replacing the stock pulley with an ATI 10% underdrive next week because of the very things you were saying about them. It doesn't get much worse than a balancer coming apart at any rpm. Thanks for the honest report!!

Thank you for mentioning that you can just reflow the solder on the ecbm. I'm 19 year old kid looking into the c5 because it seems to be in a sweet spot for what I want and what I can pay. I have a lot of electronic and non-automotive mechanical knowledge (robotics, firearm building, machine systems in general) but haven't had the chance to tinker with cars beyond replacing parts, changing oil, etc. I had heard some guys bitch about the ecbm needing to be fixed by "wizards" and saw some good deals on c5's with faulty ecbms so it's nice to know that it's just standard electronics repair. Appreciate your analytical approach, most c5 videos seem to be made by dudes that don't quite understand what's going on and just throw daddy's money at it.

I hope I've caught up to you BEFORE you bought your C5. As an owner of a 2000 convertible for over 17 years, I've learned a lot. Most important thing of all, and something I did not know before I bought mine: Buy an '01-'04. Too many differences in the electronics to list here. Bottom line: Many, many vital electronics components are improved, still available, and cheaper on the '01-'04 cars. Many electrical components from the '97-'00 models will not work on the '01-'04 models.

Another very common issue w C5's is fuel send unit and fuel pump issues. You'll notice it right after you fill your tank as your fuel gauge will suddenly drop to empty. This is because of sulfur build up in the tank from ethanol which affects not only the send unit but will eventually cause the fuel pump to fail. You can occasionally add techron to your fuel to control it but at some point you'll probably have to pull the tanks (it's a split tank) and replace the send unit and the fuel pump. It's an expensive fix because you have to drop the rear end to get to it.
@franco804

Steve, thank you much for this comment. Yes!! Fuel sending units is a big issue in Corvettes, I actually have this issue as we speak. I'm currently trying Techron.
@GTX1123

@@franco804 I tried techron too but the fuel gauge still freaks out if I fill the tank. I've resigned myself to eventually spend the $$$ to have the sending unit and fuel pump replaced. But whatever $$$ I have to pay my shop to do it at this point is inconsequential because I only paid about 60% of the blue book when I got mine (it's a 98) a year and a half ago. It was an ebay purchase from a great seller who took very good care of it. Other than this issue this car has been just phenomenal. What a contrast to the 1992 POS C4 I had years ago which was the WORST car I ever owned.

My summary of my Corvettes are they are great sports cars for the money, no matter what series or age, But they are expensive to buy, expensive to own, have technology designed to fail because it is so exotic! If you can afford to keep mileage down, stay under warranty and trade to stay under warranty they are great vehicles. Also great for weekend mechanics or gearheads, but expensive for someone that has to pay for their repairs! Most of my major repairs were over $2000.
