Loved this! Yes I grew my career rather fast as a contractor! About a 20 -25% increase in pay with each jump. Quadrupled my salary in about 2 years. Yes quadrupled!

Hi Wesley, I enjoyed the breakdown of the pros and cons. I had no idea contractors get paid more than FT. As a junior UX Designer in Seattle who’s going to be fresh out of bootcamp in a few months - •is it easier to get a contract position or full time position? are contract positions more gear towards designers w/ experience? • when in a contract position are you mainly solo? Or do you get to be apart of a team and get to work with others ? •is it possible for me to have a full time job for my current job while still being a UX Design contractor on the side ? Or would that be too much? Do contractors usually prefer people who aren’t working full time? •how does the pay work? Is it a fixed amount biweekly? Monthly ? Or do you get a lumpsum after the contract ends?

Hello! Lots of great questions, with complex answers haha. But let me give it a shot, in a concise way! - It depends....how desperate a company might be to bring in someone fairly quickly. I don't know about easier, but contract is quicker. Having some experience will help you with both types of positions. - It depends....yes to both solo or team. - It depends....how many hours are required for the contract position. Could be a full 40 hours a week, 20 hours, or less. - It depends...on the employment agency and who you're working under. Could be weekly, biweekly, or monthly. Sorry for all the "it depends," but that's the honest, realistic answer I can give you. Best of luck!

thanks for sharing! I am a full time employee and often get bored with some of the projects that I am working on. I have thought about going the Contract route but my current situation is just too sweet!

Hi Wesley. What would you say are some green flags in a company when working as a designer. I’m at my 3rd company as a product designer and each company work differently. Thanks!

The idea of leaving a stable full-time UX position for a contract UX role is definitely a little nerve-wracking for me so I'm glad you brought that up. I think more than just the security of indefinite employment I just don't like the idea of constantly having to interview and go through all the rounds and challenges and hoops every time a contract is about to end 😵💫 I'm sure it keeps you sharp though! Sidenote: I hope you're doing well since CS!

Fair point! But I do think once you build a brand for yourself and you've worked with a lot of notable companies/projects, the interview process won't be as intensive, because they'll know you're the "real deal." Also once you've built a good network as well, that definitely will make the job searching process smoother, as you won't need to stretch yourself far and beyond for the next opportunity.

@@WesleyHongUX that's true, and I imagine it's easier to build a portfolio of notable companies and projects with the more contracts you do 🥴🥴

You might have a change of heart if you knew you'd get a 25% increase in pay with each new contract.

Do you have any recommendations for ways to go about getting contract jobs? I'm currently employed full-time on a product team, but am interested in the variety and flexibility that contract work can offer. I'm not so sure what I'd do if I wanted to start "job searching contracts".

Hi Collin! Reach out to staffing agencies. They're pretty active on Linkedin. TEK Systems and Synergy are pretty well-known ones.

Have you considered freelancing?

I have not, but I might consider it in the future. I do feel like a contract role is the level 1 version of freelancing. But freelancing is definitely more daunting and you're able to have full autonomy.

So i wonder if this means contract jobs are less competitive. sounds like good news to me haha jk.

To a certain degree, I'd agree with that statement. Because most people want some higher level of stability/security, especially if you have huge financial responsibility and family. So not as many people are wanting a contract role over full-time.
