You can operate the lower part and leave the windows in place. And once you reinstall the hard covers on the box it’s a water tight 8’ compartment. Every time I lend this truck to someone they are blown away. Once of the best products Chevy ever made. 535km on this truck and still going.

As a 2011 Avalanche owner, I see you have a separated rear glass frame (common defect) as well. I stand by my statement that these are hands down the most useful trucks for everyday use. I've hauled flats of flag stone, full sheets of drywall with the tailgate up, 12' 2x4, 2x6, and 2x8s, furniture, and pulled an S10 blazer on a full sized trailer. She's yet to give me grief other than standard maintenance items.

I have an Avalanche myself and that's one of my favorite features. What I'm wondering though, is there way to fit a tool box in the bed like you can with other trucks and you bolt it down? Or would that not work because of the way the bed is designed?

I've loaded 12' lumber up between the front seats with the tonneau cover locked in and the tailgate closed and locked up, completely secure. There's not another truck on the road that can do that. I only wish the new Silverado EV was available with a conventional gasoline or hybrid drivetrain.

Did you know... you can lower the Midgate... (turn the handle left instead of right) leaving the window and tonneau cover on. SOOOO You CAN haul 8' items in there rain or snow and lock the tailgate so it's all secure. And the sidebox compartments are awesome to store jumper cables, straps, and other tools you don't want in the bed.

I wish I had looked harder for a 2500 back in 03 when I bought my 1500. I’ve always regretted the lack of any real payload ability. This week I am actually installing 4 in longer and 70% stiffer coils in the rear. This along with air bags should give me at least enough payload capacity to carry all my overlanding equipment and real steel aftermarket bumpers.
@carlberner3797

Very wrong Sir. If you leave the back glass latched on place the front of the bed releases and folds down, so can keep everything enclosed with the hard cover sections latched above the bed. I just found out about this secret just a few weeks ago and ive been around this Gen for a long time.
@DistantVision85
3 жыл бұрын
Those little turning knobs were poorly designed. Both of mine busted off without any real form of abuse. Also, you can leave the window in, and just open the bottom part. If you have the OEM tunnel covers then you can lock the tail gate, and you can have secure access from the inside of the cab to the back of the box, all covered and locked up tight. You can throw a foamy in the box, and sleep with a full sized bed.. Absolutely perfect for camping, just beware of rain if your tunnel covers and eaves don't seal, or work well. The box even has drain ports in all 4 corners, and special drainage underneath the rubber matt in the box. The locking side storage compartments on each side of the box are also ideal for storing fluids, tie downs, emergency equipment, etc.. My 1500 can tow my 5000lb travel trailer fairly well also, and has lot's of power. Absolutely amazing condition for an 03.. The main downside of the tunnel covers and access through the back of the cab.. If you have garbage in the box then the smell can travel through and stink you out. Also, when being used to haul fire wood, the bark and stuff can make quite the mess due to the crazy air turbulence and flow when the back is down. This can be enough to pelt you with bits of barks and debris, and potentially cause an accident if you were to suddenly be blinded while driving. The stuff will blast you in the face, and I can't quite remember how it happens.. I think you need to have the back open, and put your window down while driving a decent speed.. Then it creates some sort of reverse current that blows all sorts of debris into the cab.. Like all over the dash, up above the visors, and just absolutely everywhere. I bet the same will happen with loads of dirt and sand.. Still one hell of a truck.

I bought my Avalanche new in March 2007. It is the best vehicle I've ever owned. Its versatility is next to none. Lower the midgate, leave the back window in, and the tonneau covers on, you have an 8' weatherproof bed. I have carried 12' 2x12s totally enclosed by laying them up on the dash. Not recommended perhaps, but I've done it. I have also taken the back window out and laid 16' siding on the dash and run it out the back on top of the tonneau cover. I don't believe I will ever part with this vehicle unless Chevrolet ever brings them back. I read that a 2024 Chevy Silverado EV will have a midgate. Waiting patiently...

You can fold the middle down and keep the window up and the have the cover for bed in place if is rain and to protect from theft I like it can drive with the windows , sunroof open and the back open and is like an open jeep but you are far more protected in a crash.

Here's a question, can the removable window be adapted to fit on a truck? Maybe that whole back part? Maybe I'll get an Avalanche with a camper shell. People will laugh, but I'll have the last laugh as my crew cab converts to an 8' bed with full access to the driver's seat. I want one now.
