A good analog mixers does a lot to the sound. Worked with external gear including top summing for years and then added a mini console for the drum computer…wauw that sound 🔥

Good evening sir. Could you tell me. what do you think. about warm audio EQs and compressors. Compared to the vintage ones they're modeling. Thank you and have a great day.

I actually own the Warm Audio WA73 preamp which has an eq. It's quite gentle and warm sounding, not tinny or harsh on the high frequencies. I've never used the vintage Neve EQ so I can't really comment on that. As far as a compressor, I own 2 of the Neve 535's and they are outstanding! As far as a compressor is concerned, the Warm Audio WA2A is a great piece of gear, but honestly, I don't think any clone of the original LA2A is going to be a match. It's a classic for a reason. But, you still can't go wrong with the WA2A.

One more thought. I've owned the WA2A, and I've done some work with the LA2A awhile back on several projects. The LA2A is just pure, clean, transparent (when you want it to be) compression, as good as it gets. Just my opinion

I don’t think outboard gear and a console are that far apart as you’re making it seem. Many consoles have compressors and EQ just as outboard gear. Do you mean the learning curve is the routing of a console? If so, even this shouldn’t be a huge hurdle to someone who’s been working with outboard gear for a while. The DAW is essentially a console already. We use that every day. So I just don’t see the learning curve as you stress it.

The learning curve I referred to (and I should have been more clear) is the routing and using busses. This can get confusing when you've created an environment with outboard gear, and then switching to a board where everything is laid out for you. I guess I'm trying to say, it's the navigation of the board, making connections, and adjusting to something you didn't "create" on your ow.

@heyyou674 Not yet. I'm considering it, but I'm not quite set up for that yet. Stay in touch, and, I'll be making an announcement on my channel after the summer concerning that. In the meantime, contact me at fxstudio2nc@gmail.com What genre of music do you record? How much experience do you have? What equipment have you used or own? Nobody needs one. With todays gear you can get outboard preamps eq’s and even summing mixers. So no one needs one, but they’re very cool.

It would be very difficult to find a recording console that was of good quality and had all the necessary functionality that you would need for a recording session. I would suggest taking a look at the Solid State Logic UF8, which IS ONLY about $1250. You would need to have either outboard gear or plugins to use with it, as the UF8 is a daw controller not necessarily a mixing or recording console but it gives you access to your outboard gear or plugin functions directly from the unit. Same concept as using a console, without the EQ. Compression, Preamps built in.

You could get a used Toft board, but they often have issues. Also Sony mxp boards are good
