Honestly Stu that custom OG GBA is amazing!... almost TOO Amazing...you should probably invest in a tempered glass screen protector for it it's only a matter of time before it gets scratched up with how exposed it is. Good luck with your collection that said I can speak for a lot of us when I say it seems VERY interesting to watch!

The music on the GBA is some of the most unique I've ever heard. The lack of dedicated sound hardware forced devs to get creative with a lot of the music (or not try at all). The mix of High quality PSG and Crusty samples in some games just does something to my brain that I can't explain. It's definitely a cool handheld. Too bad the original model without mods is nearly impossible to see.

I still think that was Nintendo's best handheld. Had some of their best handheld games, and was just a really well designed system. No gimmicks, no advanced ideas, just a good portable system. Nothing against future systems, just sometimes you like simplicity.

If you're looking for some fun GBA games, I can't recommend enough Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission. And if you want something REALLY weird to play, there's finally an english translation patch for a japanese game called Tomato Adventure. The weirdest game i've ever played as a kid and took me almost a full decade to beat since it was all in Japanese at the time.

My first console that I got as a kid was actually the Game Boy Advance SP. Basically ALL of the games I had for the system then were licensed shovelware. It wasn’t until sometime in high school that I took a better look at the greater GBA library and realized that there were lots of amazing games that I missed out on, and then it wasn’t until mid-2021 that I started collecting game cartridges for the system. I now have Wario Land 4 and a reproduction cartridge of Rhythm Tengoku.

The Game Boys were (and still are) fucking tight. My first handheld was the Game Boy Color. I had to share it and an original Game Boy Advance with my half-sisters. I still remember how we lost the back door battery lids on them. At one point, I was afraid that the batteries would fall out, so I used a strip of Scotch tape to make sure they'd stay in. Weirdly (and awesomely) enough, while cleaning out an old workshop on my great-grandparents' farm in around 2012, my father found his old Game Boy with a Tetris cartridge inside, both completely intact minus some wear and tear on the screen and cartridge stickers. By then, the damn thing must've been in there at least 20 years. And it still works to this day! It could probably survive a fucking nuclear war. I also have the Game Boy Advance SP I played when I was a young'un.

The Castlevania DS games are also great. Dawn of Sorrow is the direct sequel to Aria of Sorrow, and it picks up directly where Aria of Sorrow left off. Dawn is probably even better than Aria, save for the touchscreen shenanigans. I love it when handhelds can be holstered in the pocket like an iPhone. Handhelds nowadays are gigantic. And putting those Joy-Con-like controller attachments on a phone makes it too long to fit on a pocket. Even the PSP, which was huge for the time, while still pocketable, makes it look like you have a leg tumour or a raging boner.

You know that Turok music you linked? That’s the same composer as Metal Masters! You know, the “how to properly clean your metal computer” song and other variations. Alberto J Gonzalez! He’s done various games for the developer Bit Managers, where he was actually the founder I believe. Weirdly, even a few Looney Tunes games! I have one of them, it’s called LT: Twouble, you play as Sylvester in an isometric puzzle game, like a lot of Rare’s on the ZX Spectrum. (He did music for another one called Carrot Crazy with Bugs and Lola, developed by a different studio. Pretty solid platformer!) Man, this reminded me I need to get an original model GBA again. I have all the others except the 2001, mine broke a fair few years ago. Need to remedy that ❤

GBA Rules! I can't wait for you to experience the style, speed, and smoothness of Wario Land 4. Golden Sun was spectacular and it's a shame it hasn't been given a proper remake yet. I agree about the Switch being too big, it's tricky to hold up in bed so I got one of those phone-holders you wear around your neck to hold the screen while I use the detached joycons which helps but doesn't solve the issue as it takes a bit of setup.

The Zelda Ages/Oracle games, The Mario RPGs, Golden Sun, Metroid Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion were my jams back then dude. Also if you love Golden Sun you should try out Shining Force 1 and Shining Force 2 which is made by the same staff before they became camelot software to make Golden Sun and the many many mario sports games. I recommend Shining Force 2 more for how more accessible, n some parts of the game are more polished over the first game, The first shining force is still a very good game but it does have some imperfections that require folks with more patience to put up with it. Also these two games got me into Tactical RPGS bother western and japanese so thanks to Shining Force I got into Mutant Year Zero Road to Eden (furry game btw), then Fire Emblem, Advance Wars and Xcom. Later I'll get that Persona 5 Tactical game since I love the Shin Megami Tensei franchise.

the GBA is such a cool fucking system. lots of people assume that it's just a "portable SNES", but if it weren't for the resolution and crusty audio (which i honestly have a fondness for anyways), it would absolutely shit all over it in every way. per-sprite scaling/rotation instead of just the single mode 7 background layer, loads of colors, a processor that's capable of running stuff like DOOM natively instead of relying on other chips, extremely fast data transfer (you can see this with stuff like Super Mario World, compare the load times)... i genuinely think it borders on being the "perfect 2d system".
