Star Wars, Disco Balls, and CHiPs on TV. 1977 was a great year for popular culture, and a not-so-great year for cars - unless, of course, affordable opulence in a personal luxury coupe was your thing.
And for a lot of Americans, it was exactly their thing. As personified by the exaggerated lines of this Monte Carlo, Americans wanted cars that were big, showy, and drove well - all for a fair price. Monte Carlo hit the target, and sold very well.
These were the last of the Colonnade coupes, and even though they were considered intermediate in size, they were longer than the new full-sized B-Body sedans from GM. Body on frame, V8 power, expanses of hood, vinyl roofs, and yards of velour were the order of the day, and GM delivered.
