Hey, welcome to The Coin Box! Life’s been really busy so I’m not getting as many videos out as I would like these days, but I wanted to make this quick video to introduce you to Harry the Eagle who lives on the other side of this 1988 Libertad. This has got to be one of the weirdest Libertads I’ve ever seen. I bought it online and in the photo it just looked dirty. I even asked the seller what it was, but he didn’t seem to understand what I was talking about. So it wasn’t until I got it, and looked at it under my loupe, that I saw this hairlike material which seems to be growing out of the eagle. Btw, I recommend you look at as many of your coins under a loupe as you can. You’ll be surprised at what you find if you just take the time to look. Now what’s interesting to me about this brush-like material is that you can see that it’s not just laying flat, but rather standing on end. I’m not sure what caused this, although I am currently leaning towards the possibility of a Struck Thru Error. It’s possible these bristles are from a brush or pad used during the minting process to potentially clean dies, but that’s just a guess. And, I would hope it’s obvious why I call it Harry the eagle, since the bristles are concentrated on the eagle's body, it really looks like it’s covered not only in feathers, but in hair as well. I’m thinking of possibly sending this one in for grading just because of how strange it is. What do you think?
Should I send it in? A friend suggested I send it in, because the holder would protect the bristles and hopefully avoid them falling off, or getting damaged by a capsule. Also, it’d be interesting to see what the graders think of it. You may have also noticed that there are impressions around the body of the eagle as well, which also point to the possibility of a Struck Thru Error. I don’t think this is all post-mint damage or PMD, but if you think it is, or if you have any other kind of guess as to what happened here, let me know your thoughts in the comments below. If you’re new to the channel, don’t forget to subscribe, also if you enjoyed this video feel free to give it a like, and share it with a numismatic friend. Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in the next one!
