Look into HDMI ribbon cables, ones where you can switch the ends. So if you want it to be Micro on end or 90* bend. I have a normal 7" touchscreen installed in what was previously a 7" portable DVD player. I cut out the back of the monitor, Basically it's an adjustable frame/stand, the pi4 hangs off the back. The 7" screen I bought had an audio circuit. I replaced the speakers with ones salvaged from a laptop. It is basically a sub notebook. I choose the bluetooth keyboard for the scenario, but I have a Logitech keyboard and trackball that work on one dongle. Anyway I use drill batteries to power it on the go. It is a full desktop with Retropie, also runs Android for movies, Anything, anywhere, with a cellphone hotspot. Also built the same into a Boombox... better for movies, plays cassettes as well. Ended up making both devices after my Piboy DMG made me think about dimensions I'd prefer. All that to say I agree. This screen will split people. I got lucky scored my 7" screen for $27 shipped. The fact that it's taller doesn't get in the way or ruin anything. I can set my 7" 1024x600 in front of 2 other monitors and see over it, so I can game and internet and movie/tv all at once. Still intrigues the hell out of me, I want one of these wide screens!

mini monitors are a massive understatement. I've been using a mini monitor for about 2 years now and they're incredibly handy without taking up desk space. Mostly use it for messages on discord while gaming or watching a video while needing the full display space on your main monitor. If I had to describe the usefulness of a mini-monitor, it's like carrying a small pocket knife with you. Although it's a small blade and not great for splitting wood or even cutting rope like scissors can, but because it's on you at all times, you end up using it more than any other tool you own.

This is a neat idea for a lot of things as comments had mentioned but even a fun idea for aesthetic might be a music visualizer or clock when not using as a productivity tool. I like things like lava lamps and such when working for some added visual interest while on task when needing a short break and this might be a way to have one without needing a dedicated device. I like the idea the only downside is the 400px vertical real estate... A lot of app dialogue boxes dont play nice at that size past win XP so it's possible to get the dialogue stuck on that screen since the title bar and confirmation buttons get cut off and the window is unscalable. 600px vertical is the sweet spot.

Like Catpaws commented there is also a way to handle this in Linux. I recall having this issue on Thunderbird email client the auto set up wizard put the Ok/ Cancel buttons below the viewable screen on several installations such that I had to use tab and guess where the focus of the buttons were, and press enter to continue. The good news is there is a relatively simple, like control + shift + click on the window which allows the mouse to be dragged off the screen taking the dialogue box with it which would reveal the hidden buttons. The bad news is I can't remember if the control + shift + click is the right combination ! but there is a way to handle this.

One of the uses that I know people have been putting these monitors to use for on the Raspberry Pi platform is small media centers, for things like running Spotify, or other music platforms. There is enough space to put album cover art, a legible tile being played, a playlist you can scroll forward and back through, as well as contrls for playback, skip, thumb's up/down, and volume. The only limiting factor to using such a monitor on your PC is most likely how flexible whatever you are using to playback music is in layout of the UI elements. But a pretty basic setup with a "landscape' layout is likely to work. And there may be space to add you favorite clock and calendar app to the screen. I can also see using it as an event queue system. Where events that require responses show up, and stay until you pull them live into your active workspace. Something like that might work with the NOtifications tool for your platform, or may be a stand alone application that could bubble up higher priority items based on your preferences. "Boss says this needs to be done yesterday, mark it as done yesterday, Wife is going into labor, top of the heap, and so on, with the top 3 or 5 items being displayed, perhaps like a row of post-it,s that can be slid left or right to see what else is pending. (because none of us has found the perfect way to automate prioritization.) And yeah, they have even higher resolution displays in this size/form factor now. Have fun!

It's essentially a standalone computer inside the computer so I know the temps and electrical parameters, the hardware states, and the performance metrics displayed on it are always available and are always objective. Software problems and obfuscations are gone, only direct and valid data are shown. Also a handy way to control fans and VRM outputs and displays and device ports, a handy way to switch things on or off without physical hardware reconfigurations, swapping BIOS/EUFI profiles or drives or operating systems or networks can be done by just pressing a button.

I'm not sure if that last part works on phones and tablets. It works tolerable well through Wi-Fi, but better through a wired connection. this would be perfect for me! as i am always busy with working on blender/youtube projects and using this for discord would let me both hear and see my notifications and all i would have to do is look down at my desk! i think this would be a perfect fit for my setup and because its cheap it wont take from the saving for a better vr setup aswell, im lucky to have this video recommended to me! thanks!

I could use that for throwing a spectrum analyzer or meter-bridge plugin window on while mixing.

I run a 13" monitor off to the side of my desk for monitoring network stats, ram usage, CPU/GPU load, storage, etc. It's great because it's always on, even if I'm doing something else fullscreen. As for wires in your desk, you can cut a hole and install a grommet in the center just behind your keyboard or wherever is suitable. I have now moved to a wireless keyboard and mouse, but I still have a shotgun mic, phone charging pad, and my Spotify Car Thing wires running through a hole in my desktop so I don't have to see the wires running all the way to the back of the desk.

I really think it is a great addition for productivity setup. I actually realized this, when I use my flip laptop at work. When I connect my 14 in flip laptop as a secondary screen for ms teams/to do/messengers etc. I actually plan to make something similar at home desk setup. But I want this extra monitor be available not only from my desktop pc, but also when I use my corporate laptop with usb c dock station. I have two 27 inch monitors connected to both, and I switch between them by getting one of the machines to sleep. Peripherals are connected to usb hub switch. So I need something similar with third mini monitor. Ive noticed your raspberry display has 2 usb C ports + hdmi. Does it has auto switch between sources as a normal monitor? On your place, I would better 3d model and print some sort of case, which will cover the wires on the side, and add extra empty space on a right side for symmetry. Some sort of triangle case to slide on from both sides after the wires are connected. Like amazon echo show 8gen.

I've been thinking about making a similar setup for a while now. I used to have 2 displays, one for my main stuff like playing games, maybe and the other for media controls and discord. I find the 2nd display was too much because I couldn't fully utilize it even when I was editing videos because most of my edits were super simple. Thank you for making the video as I'm fully convinced about making the purchase now and the ease of comfort it can bring

i use spacedesk software together with my old Samsung Tab S 10.5 as a wireless third monitor, decent size and also touchscreen. no cost at all. also very helpful even when I'm at school since i got so used to having multiple monitors while doing something. hope this comment will help other people

Would be nice if you can flip screens. I use online streaming services that will pause the video if they do not actually appear on your monitor somewhere. So annoying if you want to do something else while the ads are running during a movie. Or if you want to check something else, but still listen to the soundtrack. So being able to flip the stream down to the small screen would be nice.

6:13 to address the hdmi cable clutter, Monoprice has quite cheap ultra slim hdmi cables. High quality cables that come in lengths as short as 6” or 1’. I have tons of them in different lengths for use cases like this.

Logitech high end keyboards use to have a diagnostic & short cut screen. It was tiny and gray scale, thus it was very limited almost useless. Now this is the perfected version where you have full colour video touch screen. I already know how i'm going to use it, Music & Chat is exactly what I already use on my auxiliary monitor.

I use a 7” monitor for keeping track of system temps and cpu/gpu utilization and performance via Aida64 which is totally customizable. In addition, it is great for to do tasks and music player controls.

I think it's really good for someone who lacks the space for two monitors like I did. I elevated my main monitor and used a portable one beneath it, but I would have rather had this to keep my main monitor on eye level. I see it being good for keeping an eye on discord, controlling music or some random background video. I wonder if touch input alt-tabs out of fullscreen games

Using Windowless mode actually neatly avoids that isse - you don't tab out if you do any inputs anywhere else

If you have an old phone lying around, you can actually do the same thing with it using an app. There are videos out there of how to do it. Pretty usefull and only uses a usb cable.
