I've never personally owned a pickup, but our family is big on older Chevys, albeit we've never used them to their full potential. My mother has an 03 Suburban that just reached 200K a couple of months ago. For 20 years that thing has carried our family through the pothole laden roads of Connecticut all year round. One time, we loaded the trunk with I'd say about 1000 pounds of unseasoned maple firewood. We only went down the road half a mile with it and drove very slowly, but it worked. My mother loves that truck and it has been very good to her for the last 21 years. The 5.3 still runs strong to this day. The frame has plenty of surface rust, but no rot. The rockers are junk and my father patched a rust hole near the rear bumper with Flex Tape. Looks pretty good to me! My grandfather bought a brand new 2 door 1996 Tahoe 1500. He used that truck every day to drive to work 30 miles round trip and it essentially was like a shortbed, but with a cap. He hauled his tools and we one time hauled 750 pounds of rock salt a mile up the street. His truck had leaf springs, so it was meant to work hard. I carelessly threw one of the 50lb bags into the back and busted one of the tailgate hinges, so we got that fixed for $650. In other words, the place he took it to ripped us off, but we had fix it and paid up. My grandfather doesn't drive anymore, so the Tahoe unfortunately sits and isn't driven anymore. That beast has 240K and the 5.7 ran great, although it took 3 seconds of cranking to start up. I always loved riding with my grandfather and he loved driving his most prized possession. I loved how the engine sounded too. It was real loud upon starting up, probably due to an exhaust leak. I had an uncle who bought a new 2004 Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab with a 6.5 foot bed and a 6.0 V8 gas. Boy what a beautiful truck! He only used it to get around town and didn't need so much truck. When he stopped driving, we took it to the mechanic who said it was in good enough shape to warrant a plow. This was about a few years ago and did my grandpa listen to him and buy a new 7.5 foot shiny red $5000 Western plow! Needless to say, it hasn't snowed much recently and we only got to use the plow a handful of times. The first time, the truck wouldn't start and the battery was dead. The truck went to the shop and the mechanic put in a new battery, new tires and alternator. Another time, the truck was leaking from every hose. $6000 later, new stainless fuel, brake, oil and power steering pump/lines. The truck made this horrible burbling noise. New front shocks. To this day, the truck has a check engine light and is in the shop. The frame is super super rusty. Not to mention the brand new plow leaked hydraulic fluid. We haven't a clue why the truck is as rusty as it is, when it only plowed a few times and was driven less than the Tahoe and Suburban (which have lest rust than the pickup.) Not to mention the pickup never in its life towed a trailer! Throughout all of our family's issues with our trucks, we still love our Chevrolets and are sentimentally attached to them. Okay, my rant is over! Hope you enjoyed the story. If it can break, it will. Happy new year! Gan

I agree on small trucks. I may do the dump insert. I need to keep the weight down and find sone cheap aluminum. I’ve had two 150’s. My favorite was my 93’ with a straight six 300, stick shift, crank windows, and butterfly windows

Never heard of this Toyota Hilux truck. They made them many years ago I think. I’ll look it up. I have just an 19 year old Ford Ranger 1/4 ton 4x4 truck. I’ve had it for 13 years. Great working truck. I haul a tandem trailer with many things in it. Tractors being one. I have thought about a dump for the truck. I’ve thought about a dumping trailer, that could be hooked to my Case 224 garden tractor. Any way, have a great Sunday.

The Hilux is the European and Asian market version of the Tacoma. As for the new Toyota, it isn’t actually based on the Hilux platform, and is more or less its own thing.

We only have what you call a baby truck over here with the Ford Ranger being the most popular. We also have Nissan and Toyota and other similar pickup trucks. Over here these small trucks can cost more than 80,000 dollars new, a good specification Toyota HiLux is 61,800 dollars. We were thinking of getting a small truck but they are too expensive so at the moment we continue to use our 2003 Land Rover Discovery and a 3,500kg large 3 axle trailer which we have used for nearly 20 years now. Over here we can get tipper beds that fit inside the pickup box or replacement tipper bodies or even better and the ones we like best are the additional chassis rails that allows the factory box to tip

Good afternoon Case! Would machines such as the Craftsman GT6000 be considered a heavy duty lawn tractor or light duty garden tractor? It is marketed as a "GT" and it has 5 lug hubs like a garden tractor and Craftsman even sold a front end loader for it. The counter argument is that it also has a stamped frame, vertical shaft engine and a weak implement attach point also made from stamped metal, like a lawn tractor. Also, companies sell snow plows and snowblowers for lawn tractors, but that's just because they want your machine to break faster so you'll have to buy a new one. Looking forward to your response! Cheers! Gan

Hey Gan. I actually owned a 94’ GT6000 for several years. Grey, square hood model. Definitely a true garden tractor. Similar transmission to the old Sears Suburbans, and like you said 5 lug, 23” rear tires. I had a 48” snowplow for mine, wheel weights and a rear concrete weight. It plowed like an animal.

@BuildALotAcres How about newer machines like the Husqvarna TS354XD or Craftsman GT3000? What confuses me is the transaxle is bigger than an LT, but it is still a thin metal casing, but the frame is thin and light.

Good Morning Sir, I can't wait to have that snow storm ( 12 inches !!! ) this incoming week 😇👌👍Yes Diversity Is how your differ from the others Sir👍👌😇Toyota makes great trucks 👌😇💪 Sir, I totally agree with you about North American Trucks ( Way too much expensive and to much bells and whistles for city folk's !!! ) and no optional manual transmission either 😤 Yes again to much expensive and up here we have to pay extra taxes if the truck is bigger than 1500 on registration and 3500 need an annual inspection. I do not have a truck but I have a trailer witch it much more less expensive to own and maintained and that less too to insure and that trailer is also much more useful than a truck 😇👌👍💪 Doing a costume dumping bed will increase the weight of your truck and will limit your maximum legal GVWR,,, the idea is very neat 😢😢 Yes I own an 2013 Toyota corolla and you should see what I can pull with my trailer 👍👌😇Yes Global Warming as effect for Sure 😢Cheers 🍻🍻

I bought my 04 GMC Sierra 2500 HD used in 09, got it cheap because it had been used to haul horses and smelled like a farm in the cab even after the dealership cleaned it. Joke was on them, I love the smell of a farm! It's still going strong at 165k and I have no plans to replace it, couldn't afford to at todays prices anyway. I don't need the latest and greatest. I thought that Toyota truck was not going to be sold in the US? I might be wrong on that though. AS for a dump insert in your truck I think you'd lose too much space and capacity in the bed with that.
