Must be a powerful compressor to lift that mass. Would the compressor still run if there’s no power?

The tuned mass damper in the Taipei 101 doesn't require electricity to operate. It's passive.

4:28 Taipei 101 is not in Thailand, it is in Taiwan. (Taipei, Taiwan) But I get it, lots of people get confused because of the name. Btw, we're the real China, lol.

@@Design_Nerd Nah, it's common that people get confused, in English it does sound somewhat similar.

did i just see a light bulb as a way to dampen earthquakes????
@Design_Nerd

Do you mean covered light bulbs? In some Japanese earthquake-proof buildings, light bulbs are covered to protect people in case the bulbs explode.

And now there was another earthquake in Taiwan today

It's very sad. But at least Taiwan is very well protected from earthquakes. That's why most of the buildings remained virtually undamaged. This is a good example of how important the infrastructure is. Yes, we can't stop earthquakes, but we can prepare for them and prevent most of the damage.

@@Design_Nerd and speaking of earthquakes, guess what happened today? My house shook, this was literally the first ever earthquake I have ever experienced in my life, and our city NEVER get these. What's going on with these earthquakes? Is 2024 the year of earthquakes? I wonder where it will strike next

Engineers do it all. Architects have nothing to do with this effort of earthquake engineering

I disagree with you. It's a collaborative effort to build an earthquake-resistant structure.
