Hello Mira-J, Sam Cooke performed this song during the time America strived through Civil Rights in the 50s and 60s. Black Americans and those that supported Black Americans were subjected to brutality that led to critical injuries or deaths. Properties taken. Schools were segregated and unequal. Times were horrendous. Sam Cooke wrote of that time and its hardship. A part of the song talks about going to the movie or downtown and someone says not to hang around. He referred to 'sundown' towns whereby if a Black person is seen in that town after dark, he or she would likely end of dead. The pain in the song is real. Your reaction is real and what is felt each and every time our elders hears this song. Thank you for sharing your reaction.

This is the music that came out of the black struggle of the 1960s in the US, but change did not just come it had to be brought about - it won't ever just come - it has to be brought about

This is when singers had to-have real talent and the lyrics had meaning. Now, a word is thrown in that makes no sense. This song and Marvin Gayes “What’s Going On” are masterpieces.

Hey @itsmira-j Just FYI this song was written by and performed by Sam Cooke during the civil rights struggle for Black people fighting Jim Crow laws racism segregation!during the fifties and sixties!😢 with Rev Dr.Martin Luther King and others like Rosa Parks Fannie Lou Hamer and countless others known and unknown😢 The first picture you saw was the march on Washington and Rev King's speech; all the other pictures like women’s liberation; gay rights etc were only achieved much later due to the civi rights movement; Despite this fact there are Governors Senators; congressional leaders who want to wipe these very historical facts from our history books: water down the murderous racist history of this country 😢 Despite the fact there are people alive today who lived it and know this all happened! This is why young people like yourself should learn your history from the grandparents; parents and great grandparents who are still here to tell the story Then make sure you pass it down to your future children and grandchildren! It’s not like it hasn’t happened before 😮 The Native Americans are proof that this has happened! AND they are the only people in this country that can honestly say this is “MY”Country ! Unlike the colonizers who spew hate and lies about this being their country😮

@@itsmira-j you're welcome; People like the Black Panther party that started in Oakland California! Do you know that we have gun laws today because of the painters.? The panthers would monitor police stops in the Black community in Oakland armed; they would not interfere they stood on the streets at the traffic stops and read the person or people who the cops harassed just to let them know what their constitutional rights were! There were no gun registrations laws back then: This is how the country works, when Black people make the laws work for them; the government changes the law! Its ironic how civil rights movement has made it popular for other people to come to this country and benefit from our struggles then have the nerve to think they’re better! Like this Republican is running for president whose parents immigrated here from India: His name is Vivek Ramaswamy; listen to his rhetoric about affirmative action; and how he feels about the Juneteenth holiday😳This a poc however he thinks and spews out maga garbage 😤please do research on him; 🙏

Not "bs" at all. The song was written in 1964 and change HAS NOT come to the nation's satisfaction AT ALL. You Trump supporters are the most misinformed people ever. Gotta put more history books in schools so others don't grow up and vote for morons.
