Blackmagics only mistake with this camera was calling it the 12K, EVERY SINGLE numpty says the same thing!! “I don’t need 12k, who needs 12K” Jeese, why the hell didn’t they just call it the Ursa Cinema camera…….That would have been the end of these endless conversations about how its not about the max resolution. Its about ALL the other features and resolutions and frame rates.

Yep, wanted this as soon as they announced it. Not for my client work, but for my own creative passion projects! Only one thing missing (according to BMDs original brief of creating the ultimate wish-list camera, for me it should definitely have dual ISO (or better still triple like the new canon C400)...

I don't know why the Blackmagic design language doesn't take into account the future. The camera body, size and design don't serve you in work and ease of use. The problem is that it doesn't compete with other cameras. It has the secret that we are looking for, color science, but they kill everything. It's a stupid company. I hope that it changes its design policy and looks to the future. It will be at the top.

It's 12k photosites, but not 12k resolution. If it's anything like the ursa mini 12k, it's actual resolution is a bit under 4k when using the 12k photosites. A 12k RGBW sensor is completely different to a 12k bayer sensor in terms of spatial fidelity. They sample a 6x6 array of photosites to derive color utilising all for 12k, which means the actual resolution is 3x less than 12k from a bayer sensor which samples across a 2x2 array of photosites. In other words, the fundamental sensor design is different so it can't be used as a direct measure against other traditional bayer sensor cameras, the goal posts have shifted.

Its the same story as when all phone cameras suddenly jumped from 12 megapixels to 48 megapixels because they were using quad bayer sensors. I’ve seen this as a marketing tactic and a way to use already produced small photo-sites on larger sensors. Thereby not having to design and produce new larger photosites when making a larger sensor camera.
@lucasvivante8988

If it was 4k resolution you could not record in 12k. A 2x2 Bayer gives an approximation for 4 pixels, also based on adjacents patern. Yes it gives an "exact" pixel, but effectively it is used to give an approximation for 4 pixels. That's why oversampling give better quality, and 8k camera can record beautiful "true" 4k. But man saying this is the same as saying an a7s3 is an HD camera wich is not true.

Hi Alex, thanks for the great commentary. I know it's not an official review, but I did have one question that you might know the answer to- The 12K has it's own memory module bay. I believe the camera will only come with one memory module when it ships. If that's the case, if I have to unload the memory module to my NAS, I won't be able to record on the camera until I finish offloading the memory module correct? So, in order for me to continue recording and offloading my memory module, I would have to buy an additional memory module to swap between the offloading process. If we are going to shoot at the highest quality and film all day, will it be best to buy an additional memory module to kinda "hot swap" while one memory offloads, the other one can be recording. I'm just doing the mental math on what this camera will truly cost with appropriate accessories (I have a feeling those memory modules are going to cost a lot). I don't see 8TB of memory being offloaded by DIT in a few minutes. I'm assuming it would take a while... I think. Again, great video as always. I'm thankful Blackmagic is innovating and hoping this camera truly delivers on the dynamic range and color.

That’s a really good point and question, in my workflow that’s exactly why I have a minimum of two media devices for any of my cameras at all times. However, from what they told me, you can offload your footage very quickly using their media again I don’t know for sure because I haven’t actually used this in a real life situation and I’m really hoping to get my hands on one of these in the next month or so so I can run some tests for you guys. In my opinion, it’s always good to at least have one more media source to offload footage and like you said hot swap.

Yes, the hope is that they release an URSA Cine Lite, sans a side screen. But that won't be for another, what 12 months? 18 months? You can also turn off the side screen if you don't need it. AND they are releasing a CF Express module with limited frame rates.

8k & 4k are FF no crop on all frame rates Think there is a 9k super 35 crop option for using non FF lenses. Also obviously there are some crops even with regards to 12k because the 12k is 16:9 instead of the open gate 3:2 full sensor capture. As well as the 6:5 anamorphic FF capture options - so there’s a bunch of variation on exactly which parts of the sensor are being used but at the end of the day it’s not crippling your options by making you have to crop in to use a higher FPS 😊🙏

It’s definitely and interesting camera, usable dynamic range and tests on that could be huge… on paper doesn’t actually compete with high end cameras… but who knows when we see it put too the test irl, as Black Magic has been conservative in the past. I would only give a hard hype check on one thing in the video… this isn’t the first camera to have swappable “built in” storage… it’s literally nothing new to have a proprietary storage device… and while it could be argued the size is notable… so is the size of the files, and the state of ssd’s becoming larger, faster and cheaper to manufacture. As NVME continues to plummet in price and escalate in size, the wow factor on 8/16tb will ware off and this concept will rapidly be looked at as an unfavorable move.

@SHDEdits

It's likely going to sit around 14, given the previous 6k full frame sensors used a 14-bit ADC, they claimed this ursa employs a 16-bit ADC for the 12-bit log output, something only really necessary if the dynamic range exceeds 14 stops.
