So basically.. just use a big focal length.. (looks at 24mm prime lens)

Ideally, you'll want to shoot over 100mm (full frame equivalent). In this video, I'm using a 100 to 400 zoom on my Sony camera and the telephoto lens on my Samsung Galaxy S23 ultra is a 70mm equivalent (at f/2.4).

Glad it was helpful! We use it all the time to enhance the composition of our photos. It's not always an option as the camera typically has to be slightly downhill from the subject and, in some cases, there just isn't room to walk backwards, but when it works out it's REALLY cool! Thanks for watching!

I do this with my phone's telephoto camera occasionally too if I don't have my camera. My Samsung Galaxy S23 has a pretty great optical zoom and offers decent compression. A lot of newer flagship phones have telephoto cameras on the back. Not all though. p.s. you can get great compression with a 100mm lens. The lens you saw in this short was a 100-400.

I don't think so. It might be difficult to find the equivalent focal range of your cell phone's camera (compared to a full frame sensor), but ideally, you want to be shooting over 100 mm to benefit from this effect. This is why you would need a cell phone that has a telephoto camera built in. It might work a little bit, but I think the bigger issue would be lost in photo quality from digitally cropping.
I already knew this trick, but my phone camera isn't good enough for those shots even though it isn't an old one (google pixel 6 pro). Thanks for spreading this information anyway! 🤗
@JustinandJess

The pixel 6 pro has a lens 48 MP 1/2.0″ sensor which is a 102.6mm equivalent focal distance. That should be just barely enough for this effect to work. You might have to digitally crop a little bit. I would recommend getting a cheap tripod if you don't have one already. I bet the stabilization would really help while shooting at long distances.

A. Digital zoom on a phone does not compress the background that’s why you need the equipment. B. Background compression on its own will not make a photo epic. You need to go to a photo spot at the right time. Sunset good. Fog good. Sunset + fog better. Sunset + fog + rainbow + maybe some birds? + moon. Now you have an epic shot of some rocks using any camera or lens. Just because you are there it doesn’t mean the picture is. Money will not buy epic pictures.

I said in the video that "a phone will work IF it has a telephoto camera". For others reading, I hate to confirm that, zooming in alone, will not make your photos epic. But it can help 🙂

If you took the photo with the native focal length of the phone’s camera then crop in to an equivalent perspective, you will still have the same amount of compression. The image quality would suffer, but the effect will be the same as compression isn’t a productive of gear but rather the relative distances between camera-subject and subject-background. The telephoto lens essentially allows one to maintain quality while cropping into that perspective.
@JustinandJess

@@nicholasjones3554 "...native focal length of the phone's camera..." That's right, but only if the phone only has one camera. I was using the Galaxy S23's telephoto camera. It's native focal length is 69 mm (full frame equivalent), which is definitely enough to give you some optical lens compression.

Please don't try your phone's digital zoom to compress the perspective and it'll just fail to deliver by cropping you view of the scene and a lot of noise in the picture will result from the loss of pixel content due to cropping! It's a better idea to take a picture with the use of a telephoto lens with a faster glass for a pronounced depth compression without losing detail in the final picture! Cameras are better to be used than a phone-camera because of bigger sensor size and higher amount of megapixel content over a larger sensor, unavailable to phone-cameras but costlier cameras are capable of giving sharper pictures these days because of their programmed image processor built inside the chip of the cameras nowadays! Please do not overdo things unless required by an incapable camera system! If you really want a good picture of a scene, you must need to know what makes a photograph better because if you're given an expensive camera system or a costly phone your photos will look as dull with an ordinary one which could be used by an expert to startling pictures! Don't go for expensive camera and lens if you want to learn! It's always better to start with your phone and an ordinary phone comes handy for making a start and if you use at will to get good shots, you'll feel why you need a camera system to fulfill your needs! One last but not the least advice is that if you want to proceed to buy a camera don't buy a camera which don't give you to take raw photos which could later be processed to give you stunning results!

@@JavaoftheLava that's like complaining to a photographer for showing you a detailed photo of the moon. I just zoomed in. That's it. The background appears larger relative to the subject because the camera has moved. It's just a matter of framing and composition... no "tricks of light" involved.

@@JavaoftheLava That is literally the size of the background relative to the subject based on the camera's location (which is just standing further away). Nothing's being warped, distorted, or misrepresented. I'd recommend checking out some long-form videos on lens compression to educate yourself... it's used in all types of photography and videography (like movies) to offer different perspectives when framing shots. I think you'll have a better understanding of lens optics and how this isn't some deceptive trick, but a principle of photography that enables artists to make better photos and videos for you.
