Those conditions were no joke. I just watched Simon, a bloke in the woods and East Anglian Bushcraft post a video from up on Kinder Scout with similarly nasty and rainy conditions. Their tents didn't fail, but I believe the winds on the both of you were worse. You made the right call. Once the shelter goes, you need to get down safely. Both of your tents were just not quite hardy enough for those winds up there, especially when the ground won't hold the stakes and there are no rocks to help secure it. Additional guylines at an angle might have added strength, but who knows. Thanks for the video!

That looked like such a long hike up that mountain. I'm sure you were exhausted before even having to have to pack up and hike back down. Hey Grizz, good to see you and Fendy! Got wind? 😁 At my age any hill is a mountain 🤣 In North Carolina we have Mt. Mitchell, you're already high up, but from the base to the peak it's a rise in elevation of 3,600 feet (1,097.28 meters) in 5 1/2 miles. Once at the top your total elevation is 6,684 feet (2,037.3 meters) I wouldn't attempt it now but back in the day it was Glorious! Appreciate you and Fendy 👍👣🐾

Wrong tent for the job...It's basically a parachute! You need a single pole pyramid/teepee type tent for those conditions as it offers the least resistance to the wind. My ultralight 1.5P DCF pyramid tent handled 65mph gusts up on Pen Y Fan no probs.

If you dont have spare pegs, take the ones out of the leeside and double peg the windward pegs. You should should always have spare pegs anyhow as bring along pegs for various ground conditions. Had a tent collapse in a storm with 80mph forcast winds. Just used my rucksack to take the weight of the wind of me and went to sleep till morning. While getting of the mountain the following day, got tossed around by the wind like a rag doll, my pocket with the map in it getting ripped off.

Thats cool i took my two girls like five years ago up to Eklutna lake campground what is on the top of a mountain outside of Wasilla,Alaska and there is no service up there so they have a pay phone so you can call out or for emergency’s its free but my two girls at the time were 12 and 10 and had never seen one so they both were like what is that lol. This last couple of generations have no clue because they are so used to the internet and cell phones back in the day im 44 so i can say that if you were out and about you had to have quarters so if you needed to use a payphone you could oh and you either carried a lil book of numbers or you had a great memory and knew the phone numbers by heart lol.

That's got to be brutal with nothing to break the wind, but unless I missed something at the end the tent appears to have survived. I have the Opalus 2 and have had out in wind like that and it performs a lot better, probably because it has a lower profile, but what I do when I know it's going to be like that is bring much larger stakes and double up the guy lines so they form a good sized V coming off the loop. That way you keep tension on the poles no matter which way the wind hits it and double on the broad side. Stake every hole in the fly and it stays nailed to the ground.
@GrizzlyGaz
11 ай бұрын
Yeah the Opalus 2 is a lot lower than the cloud tunnel. The poles were bent and some of the guylines had snapped! Fortunately the tent itself is intact and just some slightly bent poles. I think if the ground would have been firmer it would have been fine but my 8 inch stakes just kept popping out of that marshmallow we were on!

Aftsr loading the Scout and an hr later i managed to pull out. It took 4.5 hrs to get home. This was in remote Colorado, U.S.A. i t makes me want to design a 4 season tent that can be stripped down for all the seasons. Plus, i would want it to have a wood stove for heat and cooking. I would rather have a heavier tent, knowing i have all my bases covered. Any ideas on how to make it happen. Take care, brother
