If this video feels familiar, its not deja vu. Just over a year ago I published a video about this car, however the information in it was flawed, and it has since been unlisted. This video uses parts of the original script, but large sections have been re-written to fix inaccuracies and better tell the story of this legendary machine! what a lot of people miss about these is that even if you get a non AMG or Evo version, these are just great cars. You get 5 seats, fuel injection and thus good mileage, excellent vision all around and seats so comfy they rival box spring couches on a car that weighs 1.25 tons empty - and the real party piece is that they can turn on a dime and afaik all have the same suspension parts as the Evos, just different shocks and sway bars. If you're looking for a practical, affordable limousine that will outlast you, this is it. The only thing better is an estate/station wagon. Sadly, Mercedes stopped making a lot of parts for these, but there are plenty of used parts available.

"Despite not seeing the level of success that might be typical of a car that achieves legendary status..." It was racing against other legends of the time and was more than capable of holding it's own against them. "Lack of success" was simply due to having to face a few other legendary cars and only one car can win each race. When you can go toe to toe with other legends you are a legend yourself because you are their equal. Level of success is no longer relevant in such instances.
@automobilistic

I agree to an extent. My point was more that "legendary" is an emotional assessment, not an objective one. And the 190e had less success than other cars widely considered to be "legends". None of that is to say the car wasn't successful though, it was!

Great video. Fyi, "Diepholz" is pronounced more like "deep holz", the ph is not a stand in for an f there, it's the end of one syllable and the start of another, but that's hardly something you could've known, especially considering that this track isn't exactly the most well known Edit: Also it's Hans-Joachim Stuck, Hans Stuck is his father who was also a successful racing driver especially known for being good at hillclimbs (so much so that he got called "Bergkönig", "King of the Mountain"). Admittedly this is a mix up that happens often to English speakers (e.g. English DTM commentary) but it's worth pointing out

Excellent video. I was 15 when the 190E Evo 2 was released. I have so much literature on that car it's rediculous. Local dealership here in Australia helped find some pretty rare stuff. Model cars aswell. The froth from me was palpable at the time. Still is when I see that 190E anywhere in videos. Never seen one in the flesh, though there is one in Melbourne on display. I've always had pretty fast cars as an adult, my current cars are a Mitsubishi Evo 6.5 Tommi Makinen Edition which I bought brand new in 2002, more of a garage queen. My daily is a Manual, Mitsubishi Legnum VR-4 which is tuned to just under 400hp. Both wonderful and capable cars. I would give both of those away plus my soul for an original low mileage 190E Evo 2 road car despite knowing either of my current cars would smack the butt off the 190E. Easily. It's not the monetary value either.... That is the car I have had on the very top of my list for decades. Keep your Ferrari and Lamborghini offers away.. not interested... it's the Evo 2 I would dearly love to have in my garage.

I don't think they deserved the 1992 championship. The flat-plane crankshaft of Audi was "illegal" because BMW and Mercedes Benz were behind the curve in development. Instead of admitting that they need to do more homework, they lobbied Audi out of the competition. No different than banning turbos to get rid of Ford earlier. Thing is with all these series: You need to create a clear set of rules that allows for innovation. If someone comes along and leapfrogs everyone, be it AWD, turbo, or a better engine design, let them dominate the season. If you think that it becomes dangerous due to increase of power, well, come up with rules that limit displacement size and/or intake airflow - and don't have it come into effect in the middle of a season. Even extra penalty weights or tank limits for different designs or drive train configurations is just a lazy way to stifle competition.

first isn´t a 190E ,it´s a w201 model the 190 E is the 1.8 engine E stands for gasoline the same with the 300D it´s a w123 with 3.0L diesel in-line engine, in my country the most car seen on the streets even today as they demand no maintenance compared to all other cars and they are mercedes and with a plus built when Daimler runned the show, some forget that there was Rolls Royce and Mercedes , than all other 4 wheels vehicules, even today , most of the brands didn´t arrive yet to 80´s mercedes quality or better say late 60´s when developed the suspenction that was installed in all mecedes ,even today, i had the 2.5 with huge wing in the back but only in circuits ,in the road one would brake is back of driving it , the reason why we see them glued to the pavement in the turns and at high speed, also had the 2.3 16 valves but my prefered Mercedes are the bigger ones as i have all coupés released since 1960, the last the 2007 one AMG, i have one new in 2019 given to me by a old mercedes worker as in business area, it´s full renewed a 190E 2.0 automatic in a mercedes garage in germany and because i don´t like automatic gears cars it´s stoped most of the years, some videos about this car talk like if trhere was no other mercedes than this and there are many ,this is far from being the fastest , there ´s a V8 version of this not sold in the market that fies but for some reason mercedes won´t sold it, they are more about safety ,like the sign the document emited by german governament when BMW´s wanted to meet Mercedes quality (they never did) trhe cars were having speeds above 300km/h and with this due to crashes at high-speed no matter what engine the car had all bmw´s and mercedes were limited to 250km/h ,but any mechanic in 15 minuts working as he talked with friends would talke the limiter and i think i know a litle about this as i have a lot of BMW´s as i have Mercedes and more from the 70´s as bmw in the 60´s was kind of a VW beetle but anemic, only in 68 they released the first CS coupé that was my first bmw and only have a 90´s model after 1980, the 850, almost forget in early 2000´s my daily driver was a 730d ,3.0L diesel engine, there is a diference about the cars i have in my colection and the ones i drive everyday at the moment i drive a Skoda 2.0L turbo diesel mainly a VW group car as audi, seat, porshe, VW, as all parts are comon to all this brands only the price when new is not equal now in Europe Skoda´s are selling better than all opther VW group brands, also like audi´s and had a audi van that was exactelly the same as my father VWpassat van in the 70´s both cars were equal only the dash colour lights in the VW were green and in the Audi red, all rest of the car were equal even the colour was metalic blue forget to refer that the audi had a litle trim in wood by the dash ,well all know that audi was like VW in the 70´s but sold under two brands for tax purposes, also the Mercedes racing division AMG stoped running in races, all motorsport sports because whenever mercedes was in the races all mercedes cars arrived first in all races , people were getting tired as there was no competition now they chalenge themselves like how to win with doble the limits imposed to all cars and that´s how they had been running,

Huh so my old 2.5 liter wagon car was faster than a 190E 2.3, as I watched the motorweek video on it, 14 second quarter mile, about 3 or 4 more than a muscle car from the 60's, and its 0 to 60 was 8.9 seconds and mine was definitely faster than 8.8 as they said in the paperwork, and when I switched to 89 it took a second off the acceleration, still, not bad for a car from 1983, when mine was from 2010 lol although I must have had something really good under the hood, as when they switched the wagon line to the 4 bangers, they took my cars motor, and put it in the RS3, and I do miss that sound, mind you the 1.8 aint no slouch neither but that just gives you an idea of how things have changed, also a 100 feet from 55 mph was the test they used for the brakes which if you ever wondered why brakes sucked back then, that's why as their was no reason to actually have them properly rigged up for highway speed back then a funny side effect of the carter era, which they never ever bring up and why cars stagnated so badly in the 80's as they had no reason to make them better, while in europe with rally and touring car championships, they did also mercedes did rather make something special in the old days before this, using a fuel injection system off of something my Uncle Flew in the war over stutguart the 6.3, and they did race those too, granted you cant beat the look of the thing, same thing with the E30 of this era, and its a real shame the old quattro never got put in this racing series as imagine audi quattro, BMW M30, and this racing against a cosworth, which is probably what did in DTM with the rule change to go away from that, as if you cant buy the cars, then what's the point of looking at that and to think they flat out screwed over the siera cosworth too, which with how well loved that machine is, is exceptionally stupid to do like people in england and across the world loved that little monster, and rightfully so, it was like the mini cooper S of its day, fast, cheap and fun to drive, a true national treasure, and you can be damn sure the brits tuned out as soon as that went out and to think some of those motors were even put in caterham 7's too, and the people who had them loved them dearly and I wonder if that guy ever got his back, as someone had theirs jacked that was targeted BECAUSE it had that motor in it

Audi with quattro made the change plans somehow… I remember in the 1994 trying his best as a non Mercedes team in group A9 in former East-Germany. This screaming car off-/ on road was just crazy next to private Manta i400 or even works VW team in a Golf mk3.

One of the secrets of the 190E was it was the first car to premier a 5 point multilink rear axel. BMW didn't do this until like 1995. This was a major performance advantage and probably why mercedes put this into racing was just do demonstrate their handling advantage.

would you have prefered nascar where every car was built and looked the same, it was just the engine builders and the race teams differed, as the best way to develop a car, is to run it on a race track, as then you know what it can do how fast it can go, and how good the chasis is under duress, its like the ultimate stress test, and also they HAD to get involved just given the holomigation rules just like everyone else
