The violin cello piccolo! It had SO much more ease in the tone and the sound makes more sense, if you will. Just delightful!

I have a 5 string Cello. The other cool thing is that you can also play Violin music an Octave lower than written because the E String is the same as on a Violin but an Octave lower.

There are cello obligato parts in some Bach cantatas that were meant to be played on either a violoncello piccolo or a violoncello da spalla (a smaller 5-string “cello” with a strap and is played across the chest.

I much preferred the sound quality of the violoncello. Perhaps that's because its just crafted in a more expensive fashion than the piccolo cello, and while it might be very convenient having that e string, the way the standard cello sounds is just more gripping to me.

The piccolo has a ‘wider’, mellower tone with the gut strings. It also fits the (ideal) smaller spaces you’d want to play in. Ya know, rich aristocrats with their mini (dedicated) chamber music rooms. 😂

Wish the piccolo cello's E string wasn't so nasally; I always search for A strings that aren't at all nasally, so the E string would definitely need to better fit the timbre of a normal cello. That said, it's a really good concept!

When you add that fifth high E string, I am curious how you manage the temperament. If one uses Pythagorean tuning throughout (mathematically pure chain of perfect fifths in a 3:2 ratio), then the high E string is going to sound sharp against the C string relative to the mathematically just intonation of a 5:4 ratio. If you adjust the tuning so that the E string's interval with the C string is pure, then at least one of the other strings will sound flat and thus discordant against an adjacent string. How do you negotiate the mathematical deviations for an acceptable tuning?

Where can one buy cello piccolo and how much does it cost?
@jtaicello

You can generally find them online for a few thousand dollars (and if you know anything about actual cello prices you’ll know that’s not too bad). Most of them that are available are modern recreations, if you want an authentic instrument from the time period those will generally be much more expensive. For example, there is a violoncello piccolo made in 1600 by Amati that is probably valued at ungodly amounts of money.

I was confused why his strings were out of tune. Turns out, he tunes to A 415 even though the normal is A 440 which is interesting. And the end pin doesn’t touch the floor which means you have to hold it in the legs

The "standard" baroque tuning used today is A = 415 Hz, although some baroque period ensembles today deviate from it. Tuning back in the baroque period was not standardized and there was considerable variation in the pitch of an A, with some tuning it as low as A = 392 Hz or as high as A = 465 Hz. The idea of a standardized tuning system is a modern invention.

No, it is in tune with the reference pitch of A = 415 Hz, which sounds like an Ab on a cello tuned to A = 440 Hz. As long as all of the strings are in tune in relation to each other, there is no problem. You can shift the pitch of all of the strings together up or down as much as you like.
