Those fumes enter the honey on a microscopic level. Even though the honey will need to be uncapped; diffusion is going to happen. "Honey Robber" is a mild concentration of butyric acid with certain scents mixed in so that it doesn't make the beekeeper throw up. In 1974, my high school science teacher opened a bottle of pure butyric acid in the science lab for one minute to demonstrate the principle of diffusion. The whole science lab, and then the hallway cleared out. There was a complaint from the janitor, because even the classes downstairs could smell it. Mr. Kuehnis was not able to do that demonstration the next year; but a lot of students, teachers, and staff had diffusion hard-wired into their brains that day! (Teachers like that were instrumental in my becoming a scientist) It would be my unsolicited opinion that you modulate the amount of "Honey Robber" on your fume boards, and keep the time that they are on the hives to an absolute minimum. People with discerning senses of smell and taste can taste things like where a variety of grapes were grown that went into a bottle of wine. Napa (California) Valley vintners are not allowed to buy bulk grapes from outside Napa County to make their wines- even from Sonoma County. Yes, there is that much difference in flavors and tastes resulting from soils and regions. I would posit that honey tasters with a sensitive palate can taste the butyric acid if it is overused in the harvesting process. It certainly would be an interesting experiment.

Hello again my friend. Thanks for the informative content. I'm surprised you don't use 9 frames in your supers? Also, in regards to your fume board spray, I've used one product that smells like almonds and another that smells like vomit. I've had better results with the later (Bee Go). I have never used Honey Bandit, can you describe the smell by chance? Also, with my fume boards, I notice that I have some bees head up and gather under the fume board. Someone recommended off setting the FB to allow top escape as well as downward movement of the bees. I also need to use my blower to clear the supers completely, partly because I haul them in my station wagon.

The smell of the Honey Bandit is as Charlie says, "smells just like wedding cake," and that's because it has almond extract as one of the main ingredients. Aye. My favourite layout is a concrete pad under the hives so there's no grass at the front door and no soft ground underneath for vermin to burrow in. Then a fence at the edge of the concrete, and you can have livestock grazing right to the edge of the concrete without worrying about them bothering the bees. My cows have learned to stay away from the hives when they're busy, and graze the grass close to the bees when the bees aren't active. With a trailer mount lift like this, you'd lift your supers off the hives and straight over the fence - the gate is just for people to walk through. Around here long grass is more of a concern for snakes than ticks, but you don't want them biting you either.
@tealkerberus748

I'd be taking the honey supers off before putting the fume boards on them so that at least you're not putting a nasty stink into the brood nests. Maybe simply put the honey supers on top of the fume boards and let the bees leave out the top of the boxes and go home. But also, I'd want to compare this to the process with a horizontal hive.
@JeffHorchoff
14 күн бұрын
The idea of fume board is to push bees from the top of the hive, the honey super, towards the bottom boxes, the brood boxes. It is not necessary to move boxes off the hive or rotate them and then place the fume board on. I have been using fume boards like this for over 30 years and it has served my needs each year. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Once I pull my honey supers I do not put any more supers on the hive. The number of bees will be decreasing as our queens are slowing down their laying. Adding space therefore is not the correct thing to do in my opinion. God's peace Craig. Mr. Ed

That’s quite the equipment setup! Here’s another bee tidbit: Have you ever noticed bees at work? The buzzing hive, bees zipping around like they’ve got places to be and honey to make. That is exactly what it means to be "busy as a bee." These little guys are the ultimate multitaskers, flitting from flower to flower, collecting nectar, and building honeycombs like experts. Being "busy as a bee" means you are hustling, juggling a bunch of tasks like a pro.
