Cuenca, Ecuador declared independence from the Spanish Empire in November of 1820. It went about as well as you would expect, and after about a month, the Spanish had squashed the rebellion and clamped down hard on the populace. Though the people endured a couple years of hard times under the Spanish, the flame of independence had been lit and by May of 1822, the Spanish were decisively defeated at the Battle of Pinchicha, and Ecuador was free from Spanish rule (though they were absorbed into Simon Bolivar's Gran Colombia...but that's another story). Come along as we tour some important historical locations in Cuenca and learn about the short-lived Republic of Cuenca, and Ecuadorian independence from Spain.
