You should be happy anyways, the VAST majority of MTG players nowadays are coming from Pokémon when they get into their early to mid teens. I bet it just wasn't cost effective until recently. Unless you're renting the machine (somehow) or have unfettered access to one (working at a hospital as a radiologist or something similar), the possibility of making enough money to recoup the cost of doing this was probably just infeasible. I'm guessing the machine he's using is pretty old, which is why it was so cheap (new ct scanners cost hospitals hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars). Add to that the necessary technical knowledge and software access, there probably just hasn't been the right set of circumstances to do this at a large scale.

This will create a new industry for trusted card scanning companies, and two parallel markets, where one is sealed product scanned and verified by a short list of trusted companies - whose reputation is on the line every time someone sends them product - and the other is basically as it is now, where no one can truly verify what's inside. The real danger is product in that second market that's been scanned, determined worthless, and then just put back on the shelf like normal. The only possibility of combatting this is somehow being able to detect lingering damage from the CT scan itself, which kind of puts you in an endless technical arms race over tiny details... He would then return back to the stores (when you still could but that clearly doesn’t exist anymore). Messed up, but it is what it is. But yeah, it didn’t destroy it then it won’t do too much now considering people will adjust and they will correct it. Creating the computed tomography is one thing, making it legable so you can determine/see what card it is, takes knowledge of the software. You have to exactly determine the active field of visible densities, adjust the opacity-toggle and the density-toggle to the exact amount where the density of the foil creates the exact amount of contrast. But it's definitely do-able, especially if you have acces to a RTT110 scanner from Rapiscan. By the way, an X-ray based image, what a CT or RTT image is, is originally ALWAYS in black and white/grayscale. The final end-result image that more advanced scanners give you, in "colour", so you can determine what material is organic or anorganic, is actually artificially coloured, based on the density of that specific material.

The fake card was custom made and looked identical to the original (Holo pattern, coloring, thickness). When I got my cards back both Lugias actually had been graded, the real one got an 8, the fake one got a 9. This is just beyond me. I don't plan on selling the cards anyway but this tells me that there are much more graded fakes out there that get sold. I mean one could make the arguement that the card is original, if it passes grading and has a real value afterwards, but it is very alarming still.

I own a few late 2000s Pokémon packs that I found while cleaning, this is super interesting since honestly idk where the value in Pokémon packs even comes from sometimes. These specifically only have mediocre hits, and yet the packs sell for about double of what the hit would be, which makes 0 sense to me

it could be it the thinking that the packs were essentially destroyed to acquire the hits from the set so there are more rares and holos then sealed packs and the value comes from the limited quantities of the sealed packs just not being on the market so the price can be played with easier

So, this is where you get someone who will buy one of these and sell the service for $100 a pack. Even if you spend $25,000, you just need to scan 500 packs to make a solid profit. The only people who make money from these scams are the ones selling shovels.

Can you scan old magic whole boxes to find the foils? Newer boxes thatt have masterpieces in them?

He’s the first one to bring this to light… It has been going on for a while but just kept under wraps as most “tricks of the trade” are. There were some college kids who figured out how to read burned up Dead Sea scrolls that would break apart if you tried unraveling them. If you know what you’re looking for you can find info on this topic ;). He’s just the first one to do it on a budget friendly level and share it. Otherwise it can be super expensive. I would be more afraid of fake boxes. That’s where the $ would be and it seems like more boxes just keep surfacing each day. You have people at conventions with 25 boxes, 30 boxes, bunch of booster packs… Before you say counterfeit boxes and packs are impossible to make, just think of all the fake money out there.. Million dollar printers are a thing… normal everyday people can’t afford them but maybe groups of crypto $$$,$$$ titans? ;). Pretty deep rabbit hole we are diving into if you ask me. Just how deep….

Well, in the old-school pokemon packs, they can be weighed to see if a foil in them because not every pack had a foil in it

50000 dollars for the scanner + the brightest minds to study the case and develop a method to recnognize cards inside a 250$ pack? yea it seems very scalable and affordable, yea it's a real danger.

Genuine question, but does this actually correct it? Non-hitter packs tank, packs that do have hits sky rocket, and then just the overall loss of confidence of what you're buying in terms of "was this product scanned or not?" While this isn't something that will affect most collectors (as of now), Pandora's box has been opened.

Someone with the necessary knowledge will definitely turn this into a business. The learning curve for the image processing softwares is pretty steep though
