It's reported that Groucho Marx said, when asked about the political significance of this film, "What significance? We were just four Jews trying to get a laugh." However, it has also been reported that the brothers were very pleased when then heard that Mussolini banned the film in Fascist Italy because they thought it was an attack on him.

@pietrayday9915

I've no doubt Margaret Dumont knew exactly what he was talking about - I've always considered her to be one of the Marx Brothers - the Marx Brothers were of course awesome, but they were at their best when Margaret was with them, downplaying some sort of prim, proper, prudish, air-headed "straight man" character for the Marx Brothers to play against. The Marx Brothers movies were never quite the same without her. (And, if you look closely in her movies with them, you could frequently see her struggling not to laugh at the stars' antics and Groucho's improvs and double-entendres: she definitely knew what he was talking about!) The boys - especially Groucho, Chico, and Harpo - were simply brilliant comedians, but the older I get, the more I've come to adore Margaret Dumont and her more subtle comic performances in their movies - she might just be my favorite "Marx Brother"!

Since this film was made in 1935, the most immediate example at that time of an outbreak of collective insanity leading to a cataclysmic war was the collapse of reason among Europe's leaders in July-August 1914, that led to Western civilization committing mass suicide. This sequence may be classed as a musical-comedy number, but it captures the lunatic rejoicing at the prospect of continental self-immolation perfectly.

thetwisteduniverse They may find their way like I have a few years ago. I'm 30 and from the Netherlands where they never even where well known at all due to their comedy relying on a lot of verbal jokes, and back in their day few Dutch people could speak english. Didnt even know there where brothers personally, just heard the name Groucho several times, decided to look him up on KZitem, discovered he has brothers too and can honestly say they are some of the people I admire most. I've read Harpo Speaks!, Groucho and me and the Groucho Letters, watched all their Paramount movies and Roomservice and would watch all others too if I could find them available on DVD. (roomservice was on tv by chance.) Also looked up pretty much any info I could find on them, like their other performances on tv shows, interviews and such. I just love their outlook on life, finding the funny parts of it and appearantly all of them felt eager to take anyone who took him or herself too seriously down a peg. Both in the movies and real life. And they did not do it with vulgar jokes but with clever insults and innuendo. It's been of great help to me, Harpo helped me to finally sleep easily. His carefree attitude through his book helped take my worries about trivial things away. Also something to keep in mind, I grew up with cartoons such as the Looney Tunes and Animaniacs which are both strongly inspired by the Marx Brothers. Anyone who grew up with cartoons following their brand of humor will like the Marx Brothers too.

+thetwisteduniverse Sadly, the movies themselves are really racist and sexist: I think young people will enjoy sharing comedy snippets but avoid sitting through an entire annoying movie. I know a couple of young girls who don't like seeing Harpo Marx chasing terrified women around with that serial killer stare in his face, but they like seeing him play the harp or pulling a burning candle out of his coat.
@willemverheij3412
8 жыл бұрын
teenygozer Well times have changed, I dont see the racism in their movies to be honest and Animal Crackers clearly showed that his characters intentions with women where pretty innocent. Especially compared to modern times the brothers where gentlemen towards women, even Groucho who became increasingly cynical about women due to three divorces. The brothers themselves where not racist either and where accepting of all people. Being jewish they suffered their share of racism as well so I imagine they sympathized.

I'm not particularly pacifistic, but hands-down, the two best anti-war movies of all time are "Duck Soup" and "Doctor Strangelove (or, How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love The Bomb)" - both brilliant anti-war films. I can't help remembering this scene from "Duck Soup" and feeling a bit of a sobering chill at the mob mentality every time I see the country catch war fever and start cheering about going to war.... The rest of the movie was just as good, too: for example, I can't help remembering the song where "Firefly" recites the laws of his administration every time I see the law-and-order parts of a party's platform, every time I see some talking head on TV wringing their hands over some tragic current event, or every time I hear someone complain "there ought to be a law!"
