Check the pressure plate for a "wobble" by pulling in the clutch and kicking through while watching pressure plate. If pressure plate is "wobbling," adjust spring tension accordingly so that it applies equal pressure to the discs all the way around. Distance between outer spring retainer and pressure plate is ~ 7/16". Use a 7/16 long socket and wedge it in between spring retainer and pressure plate all the way around pressure plate by each hub finger. That will set your spring height accordingly. Additionally, it will ensure equal pressure all the way around. If that plate is super wobbly, that can cause issues for clutch grabbiness or wonkiness. Also, check the holes in your friction discs to see if they are sticking on the clutch hub fingers. From the video it looks like they are. Open them up a skosh so that the plates move freely. Check your clutch hub fingers for grooves as well as the dawgs on the clutch basket. Clean up where necessary. Make sure that full clutch pack moves freely on the fingers and dawgs.

Best bet would be what I've always used. A set of Barnett wet and dry clutches. That way IF fluid gets on plates they still behave. Nice bike.

I use to put the outer primary cover on a flat peace of glass and check the surface for wobble if they had any which most of them do I would file it until it set flat on the glass surface and that stopped the primary covers from leaking using a James gasket of course.

As soon as you pulled the primary I noticed your 5 plate nuts were cranked down way to far over pressing the springs. Backoff of them to about only 3 threads show. Oil problem check breather line and if stored any length of time put oil pan underneath it to catch oil it will barf all over floor from crankcase. I love my 77 FLH shovel would not trade it for ten new ones. Oh I clean clutch plates with a small sand blaster not alcohol

If you have the old original-style 10-stud clutch hub, check those studs to see if there's any notches worn in it. I run Barnett HDP-5K (kevlar) clutch plates which are aluminum and don't wear into the studs. The Ram Jett retainer and full length rollers helps keep the clutch basket in place and will eliminate any drag.

@@lowkey58 I notice you have a fairly new hub with 5 adjusting nuts instead of the stock one with 3. I use these too, but I had found many do not seat deep enough on the transmission input shaft. Check the alignment of the motor sprocket and clutch basket teeth. Run the bike with the primary cover off and then pull the clutch lever in to see if the chain & clutch basket tracks outward. The Ram Jett retainer and full-length rollers helps prevent this.

Knucklehead,Pans and shovels all had a bit of a clutch problem. Grabby or slipping heres why. The four speed transmission was designed in 1936. It was design for a tank shift and a rocker clutch. Harley didn't change the design until the late 80s and then not by much. Riders would let the clutch slip a little because it was easier to shift. My 75 was one of the last years tank shifters and rocker clutches were sold. I never had clutch problems, nor did any one I know who used this set up. I'm putting this out here so you young shovelhead guys will know. Also while I'm at it. Shovelheads don't need leaded gas,nor lead additives. The over head valve engine as made by Harley dates to 1936. They didn't start putting lead in gas until WW2. It was a cheap way to boost octane for aircraft . Anyways enjoy the shovel. I think they were the best Harley ever built. Keep the shiney side up.

It's been over 35 years since I've owned a shovel, but it seems like the clutch adjustment was 1 3/4", not 1 1/16". Clutch plates and the drivers need a little clearance from the studs in the clutch drum. Mine was a 1980.
