Its not the "sound" or "tone" that is realy different between good ones and junk ones, the differences are output amplitude and tendency to feedback or be microphones when talked into.
@darwinsaye
Жыл бұрын
@@snap-off5383 I’m well aware. My point is that the qualities that people prize in many pickups (vintage PAFs for example), are due in large part to characteristics like low output, a certain degree of microphonics, unequal windings on the two coils. And these are some qualities that are inherent in cheap pickups. Yet, people’s first impulse is to “upgrade” them to something expensive to get the qualities of vintage PAFs, instead of just using their ears to compare. In which case they might realize that the stock pickups might already have those qualities they would be chasing in a new set. Back in the 80s everyone thought higher gain meant better, so everyone was swapping out pickups for overwound, high output pickups that actually sounded like crap because they had no clarity or definition. Nowadays a lot more people want a more vintage sound, but they still don’t realize, that they may not need to swap out pickups. They just do it without thought.
@snap-off5383
Жыл бұрын
@@darwinsaye Microphonics have never helped tone. Have you ever had a set of bad unwaxed pickups? The only use for them would be if you want to record some nasty feedback and are having trouble getting your other pickups to feed back in your apartment at low volumes. Also good if you struggle with pinch harmonics, if you're even close on those, they'll feed back and stabilize on "almost good enough" pinch harmonic technique where waxed potted pickups won't resonate and synchronize with the harmonic.
@darwinsaye
Жыл бұрын
@@snap-off5383 Well we’ll have to put it down to personal taste, particular kinds of music played, and technique. I’ve been playing for 45 years and owned dozen’s of guitars of all types, and I prefer to have some microphonics in my pickups, which has always been controllable with playing technique. I don’t play high gain or metal, so I don’t need to have dark overwound pickups so I can keep wild feedback under control. Over the years, I’ve owned a few guitars from the high gain 80s era and never kept them because I never gelled with the dark sterile tone and how they rob my amps of clean headroom. I’ve got a few vintage guitars with varying degrees of microphonics to the pickups, but only one of them was bad enough that I had to give it a light potting job. And I’ve got a couple of newer guitars with inexpensive stock pickups that sound great and don’t need any “upgrading”. I’m not saying there are no bad pickups out there, I’m just saying, too many people listen to the mob voice saying you automatically have to replace stock pickups, instead of listening with their ears first. As an example, this guitar of Trogly’s, being a Chibson, probably has $25-$30 pickups in it, but they sounded good. Clear and articulate, likely microphonic, but he wasn’t struggling in the demos with feedback. If I owned it, I’d be keeping them in.

I personally really like the sound of these pickups. They have bells 🤩compared to the very similar Squier HBs, they are light simply because of the aluminum base plate. Unfortunately, really poor material, the screw thread tears very easily when the instrument is dropped!😕

Unfortunately nobody ever tries to talk into a chibson pickup on their reviews, but they're microphones. The instant feedback is more of what changes when you swap them not so much the tone.

@@snap-off5383 I will test that when mine arrives. I'm not convinced they are actually microphones. There are tons of different 'Chibson' manufacturers and sellers judging by the amount of fakes on Ali Express. I definitely plan on fitting new pickups when it arrives anyway.

@@Molotov_Milkshake They're not "microphones" i.e.basically a small speaker wired up to work in reverse. Thy're "microphonic" they've not had their copper coils "wax potted" so the coils themselves vibrate and cause signal on the line. Thus you can talk into them, and hear yourself through the amp. Wax potting stops pickups from doing that.

@@snap-off5383 Aren't you just describing a pickup there though? I mean literally, that's all a pickup is...wires wrapped around magnets lol. SMG proves a lot of this mythology to be bullshit.

@@Molotov_Milkshake No, i'm describing two different types of pickups: Wax potted and not wax potted. The former has great "silence" when not playing' the other acts like a microphone and amplifies every vibration in the guitar whether or not it was from the strings. So when you try to make "silence" in a loud concert with it you get instant screaming feedback that you can't stop since you can only stop the strings from vibrating, not the coils inside the pickups. Wax does that job well. SMG hasn't debunked that basic fact at all. He'll confirm it.

I like the larger guitar body. Not that this is, but I wish it was more common to scale the body up when you go baritone like on the buckethead (or even without it being baritone, like this one). I'm a big dude (6'5 260lbs) and normal sized guitars can look like toys on me.

I hope there is an "oversized" series in the future too! The guitars always seem more "lively" for some reason

It seems to me that you really connected with & had a great time playing this guitar! I also must say that I think it sounds better (clean & dirty) than some of the thousands of dollar guitars you have reviewed. This recently happen to me as well. I ordered a really cheap guitar(unfinished) from China and built it. Turns out to be 1 of the best spending unique guitars in my collection..! Go figure. Just goes to show that you can spend a lot or very little and you could get a great playing, great sounding guitar. Face it... most parts on guitars are made over seas and then the big companies just put their names on them..! Same stuff.. Enjoy it!

Have you checked out the new digital whammy bars. I haven't seen that much about them, but they are supposed to stay in tune a lot better. Have a good day.

Mine finally arrived. It's a little different from this though. It's 27 inches roughly tip-to-tip, so regular Explorer size, and the top has a black binding around it. It actually looks really nice. Sounds good too. Only downside is it has a few sharp frets and a scrape on the headstock. Hopefully I'll get a partial refund for that though. Otherwise it's awesome.

Maybe you wont get a lot of use out of it but have you considered a loop pedalbor board so you get do lead over your rhythm.

I guess you must have got this from the same guy that made that guitar that I call my Chibson Fung, which is a non-reverse Firebird III with 2 P90's and a wrap-around tailpiece, volute & all. The even guy sent me "in progress" photos and not a "Gibson" in sight.
