C'mon, man! It was a scrum. There were players all around him, at close quarters. Even if he didn't intend to land it on somebody, it was at the very least reckless and unnecessary. You just don't do that in a crowd! You don't have to intend to trip someone to get a tripping penalty; just putting your stick between the player's legs accidentally is enough. Most penalties aren't strictly intentional: shooting the puck over the glass, high-sticking, often interference, hooking, etc. You are supposed to be in control of yourself on the ice, ffs. I think a 1 game suspension will likely happen and is warranted since he did spit on Doughty, regardless of intent or lack thereof. However, outside of the league being involved in any consequence, I think this is between these two players. If Drew and Key are on good terms after it, then I think that should be good enough. I’ve seen so many hypotheticals flying around on twitter and, at the end of the day, it happened, Key apologized, Drew accepted, and it’s over. Everyone can have their opinions but they shouldn’t matter. Key is a great young player and I think he’s still got his best years ahead of him. Hope he doesn’t let this get him down. When you're out there flying around and you finally get a whistle, you're out of breath, you're brain is all foggy and you're not really thinking, it sometimes instinctive to spit once the play is "over." I do it in beer league every now and then when lining up for a draw, or as soon as I make it to the bench. One time I sat on the bench after a really long shift, exhausted and went to spit on the ice and accidentally caught a referee in the midsection who was zooming by our bench. Thankfully he didn't notice, but I felt awful after it happened and thought to myself "I better be more aware of my surroundings if I'm spitting next time." And now I always make a point to stand up and aim it down at the ice. Accidents happen. Still should receive a small suspension just to send a message to him and the league that you can't do this, ever. Two games minimum I think is appropriate, and then if he ever does it again, throw the book at him.

Intentional or not has nothing to do with it. Would high sticking ever be called if it had to be intentional?

Well an in-game penalty and multiple game suspension are different things

Bettman and DPS guy whose name I don't remember have issued a statement giving Tom Wilson the death penalty for this action.

I think Miller is one of the more underrated players on the team. I love the guy. However, I can't see how this would be accidental. What I think is that after the game Miller's mom called him and gave him an earful. The minute he was tossed, I thought, "He's gonna hear from his mom!" She's super supportive of him and I know they have close relationship, so it would honestly surprise me if she wasn't watching and didn't call him up. "I'm not angry, K'Andre. I just disappointed."

That can happen to anyone, really, like me cycling to work and a fly flying into my mouth while I'm sport-panting (since I'm a speedy cyclist), me really spitting it out but then the spit falls on someone.

This is a tough one!! his eyes say it was accidental. But the media will have a field day on this one... Sad.

The league has precedent on this type of behaviour. Whether it’s intentional or not you are responsible for your actions. If accidental that’s great - should be easy for both of them to move on afterwards.

I’m leaning towards believing this was accidental. Regardless, spitting on someone should warrant a suspension, in this case I would do 1 game.

That was not unintentional 😆 he was literally looking Doughty in the face when he spit 😂
