My 1st gigging guitar was a 1962 Gibson SG Special. Great axe. IT sounded SO good...[not ME...] Later...in 1972 orso, I stumbled upon a stunning Les Paul "Recording" guitar. It was a recording studio on a strap! Had to be 14-16 pounds! Seriously. But it was a magnificent achievement. Mr. Paul told me himself that THAT guitar embodied every single innovation and electronic wizardry he successfully created. He said the road beginning with his GIANT breakthrough with Multi-Track recording led, eventually, to that astounding "Recording" guitar. Whoa. Those were some of the best days of my elongated life. Mr. Paul was a legitimate genius. Great guy, too. Highlight of my studio recording daze.

I got this just to try out an SG (Im a fender strat guy) a couple of years ago (before covid). The neck on mine IS rosewood. It has a kill swtich pot that is pretty cool and the color is a bit different (it's glossy). Honestly, apart from the tuners just doing their job (I once play a Epiphone Special LP that had the worse tuners ever), the SG I got is amazingly good. Heck, I play it more than my Ibanez! Maybe I was very lucky, no idea, I was never able to find that exact same model again...

Plays as well, if not better than my $500+ models. No sharp fret ends and a beautiful fretboard on mine. Mine also happened to be made in Indonesia as opposed to china (it seems the fretboards out of china are the biggest downfall.) In summation, A great buy if you can find one that feels good to play!

Epiphone for some reason does not list some of their more affordable guitars, let alone specs. So, retailers are left with posting old specs that pre date the CITES act.. Now Epiphone does list specs for it's new Les Paul Special II E1 model, and that finger board is listed as Indian Laurel. I have held one in my hands, and the LSPII E1 finger board is the exact same material that is on both my Epi LSPI P-90 guitars, 2020 and 2021 models. Furthermore, I've also played that new SG you are reviewing here, and it is the exact same finger board material as both of my P-90 Epis. On a final note, your SG was manufactured facility 13 in China, as were both of my P-90 Epis. So, after geeking out a bit too much here; Indian Laurel seems to be the finger board answer...but was there a question??? Does anyone care? Bottom line; the finger board works just fine. It's NOT Rosewood, most likely Indian Laurel, but it still works. Thank you Mr Bailey for your Epi SG review.

This guitar taught me something: a guitar is a piece of wood that holds pickups. Bought mine to mod, installed Gibson 57 classic pickups, Gibson pots, orange drop 22uf cap, Tusq nut and Grover tuners. Sounds and plays freakin awesome. $289CAD for the wood, $550ish for the parts. Honestly, this plays as nice as my Goldtop that costs me over 3k. What the Goldtop has is its beautiful finish and brand name, which is worth something and why I have it. But modding this little gem blew me away

The downside of cheaper guitars, the Frets. Every Squire and Epiphone I need to go through and do the work on them, Its just the trade off for the cost grant it they have gotten much much better over the years. PRS SE tends to put all the money In the woodworking Frets/Nut and some of the hardware, usually the Pickups/and electronics are where they skimp the money to make it affordable. cheap Alpha Pots, which are fine, just not the greatest.

@nocturnal101ravenous6
2 жыл бұрын
@@landonbailey Yeah, cheap Nickle, typically you have cheaper alloys and then you have expensive alloys but you are sliding, slapping, and abusing the crap out of the frets, it is rare to come across a vintage LP that is actually played that doesn't have frets down to small nubs that are barely there or severely worn. Stainless steel frets are real nice, I seriously hope we see them start filtering down to Fender's product tiering rather than just being bound to the Ultra Luxe series. Especially because Nickle is actually more expensive ironically than Stainless steel metal wise, processing depending on the alloy shouldn't be all that different either, just more wore down tooling on the finishing steps.

The difference between the neck and bridge pickup resistance is crazy! I have an older version of this from 2001. The bridge is about 15.5k ohms while the neck is 12.5k ohms. That's a lot closer. I guess it's to support the "local retailers" and all that BS (because shipping costs like that force you to buy domestic), but we're just poorer now because we overpay for everything... I played guitar from the ages of 12-21 (2003-2012) then for some reason I just lost my passion for it and one day set my guitar down and never picked it back up. I eventually admitted to myself I probably wasn’t ever going to play again and sold my amp, two electrics and acoustic. Then in 2020 I started watching a lot of guitar KZitem for some reason and realized how much I missed playing and how much I regretted being a lapsed player. I decided after 8 years I wanted to play again. I always loved the look of SGs so I went with this and an Orange Crush 12 amp. I adore this guitar! It feels so good to hold and play, especially since I’m a smaller guy. Maybe one day I’ll upgrade to a higher quality Epiphone SG or maybe even a Gibson, but for now it’s a perfect for just playing in my apartment. It’s reignited my passion for playing and I plan to play this thing hard until it’s worn down. Another benefit of it being so inexpensive is I’m finally learning about good guitar maintenance which I never used to do, but hey if I screw something up on this (like adjusting the truss rod) it’s no big deal at this price point. P.S fellow Canadian here, I love Long and McQuade. Thanks for your great content!

Used to own this guitar, amazing for beginners that like the SG style but if u want something with quality I’d skip this one.

owned this guitar for a year mainly because of tony iommi. this is the best beginner guitar if you arent sure about playing guitar, i would say the jack input is junk and needs to be changed out when you get it

sounds pretty dead. something's adding dullness. something i call "milk" to the tone. also doesn't seem to hold tune with a crap. wonder if a better nut and tuners would help?

the fret bars protrude a bit and are a bit rough but I'm ok with it. I like the guitar. Love the neck but yeah, the fretboard does look like cardboard lol. Didn't notice that until I brought it home but no big deal.

It's such a bad guitar, i had one for about 4ish years and every now and then the frets cut my hand when playing and I have to dress the ends down. And the switch does not work for 75% of the time

Awesome review as always . Got one with wrap around bridge . Regular finish. Had a Tusq nut installed. I love it and I think the pickups are fine for playing clean . Love the Michael Bolton cameo. I think maybe if you were to superimpose bolts on his neck ( ala Frankestein ) it would enhance the whole experience. Just a suggestion.
