My sweet summer children, you claim to be detectives but missed out that Walter was saving his family in all of this. He's out playing you all because you're relying on your emotional reaction rather than logical. Remember, Hank forced Walter hand to defend his family. He's dying either way so all the money, the business, everything will get tied up and ruin Jr, Holly and Skylar. To the DEA, it's moved on because Walter was out the game. Hank couldn't put family over the job. That's what the scene was about with Hank as he tried pleading with Hank to let it go. He was telling Walter, you're so dumb there's no way to come back from this now the bell has been rung and he already choose that Hank wasn't family anymore, he was ASAC of DEA First. Marie called it in. Hank made that choice after the dinner and the DVD. The moment Jesse was tossing the money out the window, he wasn't going to be able to "live a normal life." You both are forgetting Jesse doesn't have a job. IRS with the FBI was able to lock up Al Capone due to Tax evasion. Jesse was going to spend life behind bars regardless. The only thing Jesse could do is RAT on Walter. That means Jesse was dead to rights by Lidia either way as scene with Todd's Uncle being able to shut that shit down. The ONLY reason Jesse is alive since episode 1 is because of Walter. If Walter would have agreed to keep cooking, Jesse would be dead in that dessert again like how he was supposed to die. The reason this is all taking place in the same place is to parallel that Walter saved Jesse and once again Jesse turned on Walter. This is Jesse acting impulsively again not thinking things through just reacting to his emotions letting them control him. Without Jesse, Hank had nothing. Hank decided that he couldn't be family with Walter and chose the JOB over family. Hank doesn't care what the fall out might be, Jesse doesn't care what the fall out might be, Jesse was about to burn up house no knowing if anyone was home or not and willing to destroy those kids future regardless because he's tired of losing to Walter. That's ALL EGO. Brock and his mother was safe. Remember Jesse put them in danger by 1st trying to sell her drugs while she was in rehab and then having a relationship with her while he worked for Gus. By calling the cops and making it seems like she only helped in fear of her kids safety, that she didn't know nor choose to help of her own decision. This helps her legally avoid prison herself DESPITE her trying to stab him. Even though he did take Holly, he knew he couldn't keep her on the run and that's why he returned her by trying to save Skylar legally by distancing their relationship. JUST like when he was working for Gus and he signed the divorce papers so that she can protect herself legally if he got caught. Again, look out for the family over everything else. Jesse was never going to have a happy ending because never used his money to do something more with his life as Walter kept trying to tell him to do. It's more than just a relationship or playing step dad. He needed another way to GIVE back to the community which he's taken so much as a drug dealer. Jesse was always dead to rights since season 1 by either the other drug dealers or locked up for drug dealing. That's the make plot hole everyone keeps missing. You can't just buy a house with no income and not get investigated. Crazy 8 set up Jesse which got Emilio arrested. They found Emilio because Crazy 8 was a snitch and reported Jesse's car, the same car Hank tracked to Tuco. Jesse was always going to be arrested and didn't because of "PLOT HOLES." The fact he never did anything with that money only made things worse for himself. Spartan, I think you're most biased against Walter even though by now you should know everything. You should be able to retrospect on the whole series and understand no one was "good." Walter did it for his family and tried to save his family. The reason Jesse doesn't have his family or friends because he doesn't maintain real relationships. His friends were only drug mules to him. He's a "fair weather" friend meaning when it's time to party to do something that benefits him is Jesse around. Pudgy is right, nothing could be fix because HANK couldn't let it go. He could have kept it to himself and put FAMILY first over his job. However, that was never going to happen. So pudgy so smart. She understands the series is all about 1 thing, the corrupt system and society. That US medical debt can drive good people into terrible situations and even if you're doing everything right, like Hank, your insurance won't cover all your needs to make sure you're back on your feet and that's the real system driving criminality. The biggest factor to crime is worker exploitation, low wages and overwhelming debt. Just like Walter, a genius chemist and teacher, wasn't covered by his medical insurance and even having a child with that debt can drive a good person to work multiple jobs. How teachers are under paid, how insurance companies screw people over and how lack of good wages, affordable healthcare and worker protections are the biggest factors at decreasing crime.

Skylar and Walter's acting in this episode are amazing. I think it's the highest rated episode, for good reason. Skylar doing the knife confrontation is amazing, and chasing down the car. And Walter's acting in that phone call is amazing. I think it's done well enough that people who are paying attention definitely understand what he's doing. I think his main concern was keeping his family from prosecution. When Holly said 'mama', I think it hit him like a ton of bricks, and he knew what he had to do. She was quite literally the only thing left in his life that might have any hope left of a normal future.

Hank couldn't just let Jesse walk after putting cuffs on Walt. He needs Jesse to testify against Walt in court, and the best way cops know how to make that happen is by arresting your arse for being complicit to the crimes and giving you a lesser sentence for testifying in open court, in front of a jury, against the real target. They weren't letting Jesse walk, and go be free living his life like nothing ever happened, not by a long shot. Hank didn't give a crap about Jesse, he just wanted Walt, and he can't nail Walt without locking up Jesse too.

The entire conversation Walt has over the phone with Skylar after he kidnapped Holly was to give her plausible deniability. He’s never treated her like that in the past, he especially has never called her anything remotely as bad as a “Stupid bitch”. He knew the authorities would be listening, so he gave them what they needed. A confession of what he’s done and an exoneration of Skylar that she knew nothing about what he was doing. The line about Hank was purely theater, it contradicts everything he tried to do to convince Jack not to kill Hank. He never wanted Hank dead and would have gone to prison rather than have Hank die. Unfortunately it was a situation where the choice wasn’t in Walt’s hands. Walt also got so harsh with Jessie because to Walt, Jessie betrayed him by ratting to Hank and then participating in the ruse to get Walt to lead them to the money. This also directly resulted in the death of Hank and the loss of most of his cash that was supposed to be for his family. Walt blames all of that on Jessie, because he refused to sit and talk with Walt and instead tried to burn his house down and then ratted to Hank. People also tend to forget that the entire shitstorm with Gus was because Walt protected Jessie. Since Jessie would never let the death of Andreas child go, and was determined to kill the drug dealers, Walt had to make a choice. Let Jessie die, or kill them himself and deal with the fallout. The fallout from protecting Jessie is what led to Walt’s life being in danger from Gus and ultimately the death of Gus and the crumbling of his empire. In Walt’s eyes, Jessie owes him his life multiple times over and Jessie killing Gabriel wasn’t enough. Then Jessie betrays Walt, which leads to all the other consequences, and that ends with Walt just being savage to Jessie.

Very dark episode. I remember when I first saw it, couldn't believe how hanks story ended. When Walter falls to the floor when hank meets his end reminded me when gus was on the floor in the flashback where his "partner" gets shot by Hector by the pool.

Pudgey has spent the entire series thinking people are nice (Walt, Hank, Gus, Todd) often making excuses for them (especially Gus) when they're ultimately drug dealers in a dangerous business and capable of anything. It's been hilarious to watch such hope haha

That's the clever line this series has always walked - making you empathize with people doing objectively awful things. I've rarely seen two viewers agree on when Walt crossed the line into being irredeemable

@@DrewDragoonYeah, too true. Between the gigachad cult that formed around Walter, and people doing as you say it was a bit infuriating. I didn't excuse Jesse's actions myself per se, but he was definitely the only character I wanted to see get off the road to perdition by the end😅

24:50 I have seen the behind the scenes of how they shot this scene, and Anna Gunn truly gave it her all. It was apparently very cold when they shot it. The director was hugging her after the scene as it was very emotional.

My first time watching this show years ago and even a little bit now, i feel anger towards Jesse. His volatility is a liability the entire show. Jesse is definitely to blame for how everything went with Gus. Jesse went from a super high ground of defending Andreas young brother, to being Mikes right hand man and working for evil Gus. Then jesse flip flops BACK to the good side to help the DEA which he knows is a major penalty for someone in his business. Walt is really smart and his plans would work if jesse went along. Almost everything is jesses fault. But Walt will always survive and advance. Very epic episode. Walt probably went overboard when bragging about watching jane die tho....

Walt was blaming Jesse for Hanks death, because Walt trusted Jesse not to rat. And never thought Hank would even be there. He'd have never called Jack if he thought Habk found if.

LOL 😂 Faking that "anger" on the phone call with Skylar to get her and Jr off the hook while the cops listened was the LEAST he could have done.

The episode is appropriately named for one of my favorite poems by Shelley, about the ruined statue of a once powerful king. There's a video out there somewhere of Bryan Cranston reading it (text below). "I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: "My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" No thing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away. "

Lot of people didn't like Skyler character and/or Anna Gunn, I'm not big fan but in this episode, she is amazing, when she cries, I almost want to cry too, brilliant.

After finishing the series you go back and rewatch it from the start and its clear Walt is not a good person. Jessie didn't even want to work with him in the first episode. Walt blackmailed him into doing so. Still this episode was soo much to take in. Like it just didn't let the viewer breathe for a second

The episode was named after this famous “Ozymandias” poem: I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said-“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.” Wikipedia explains: “Two themes of the "Ozymandias" poems are the inevitable decline of rulers and their pretensions to greatness. In the poem, despite Ozymandias' grandiose ambitions, the power turned out to be ephemeral.”

this episode specifically- is the purpose of breaking bad. It’s the climax of every action, every decision, every word spoken, since walter woke up one morning and stared at his Nobel Prize collecting dust on his wall. These are the consequences of greed, desired ambitions, feelings of failure, everything that walter has done with his entire life lead up to the moment of this episode. The lies, the murders, the manipulation, everything. In my opinion, its the greatest episode of the entire show specifically for these reasons. Its so horrible when it gets to this point while the audience holds onto hope that it’ll all work out. By the end, you can only question “how did it get this horrific?..what comes next after THAT?” It truly doesn’t work out, at all. it really comes crashing down so hard in this episode theres absolutely no possibility of salvaging whatever fantasy the audience & walter had for these characters. Its the hardest episode to watch in the entire show. Every actor plays their role perfectly. One of the most heartbreaking episodes in a television show, and in media, of all time. It is worth the 5 seasons it takes to get to it. A 10/10 in writing, film making, acting, everything. I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said-“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert…Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
