Because you keep getting confused why Fuji and Mariko act the way that they do, please remember that Japan at this time operates under bushido and they are samurai women. For them, life is duty. And death is just a part of life. After 80 days from death, they believe that they will resurrect into a new life with those they have joined in death. So in dying with her baby, Fuji would be reunited with him. In living, she would be separated from him. And that is why she desires death. Likewise, it is why Mariko desires to die to rejoin her family. And it is also why her husband denies her the right to die, because he views the her responsibilities to him and his family as being superior to her responsibilities to the family to whom she was born. He wants to absolutely possess and dominate her fully. And he's failing. As wives, their duty is to their husband, to their husband's family, and to their husband's sworn lord. They are to produce children, manage households, and efficiently serve the families and lords to the best of their abilities. They are even to fight if needed. In fact, the samurai women of this era carried knives in the sleeves of their kimonos, and this was the knife that Fuji held at her throat when her husband tried to take her baby. You will see this knife again later. Suicide was seen as honorable, and there was a ritual surrounding it. Often living was considered dishonorable. So Fuji and Mariko are torn. They are being ordered by their families and their lords to live, even though custom says the honorable thing is to die. Their instinct is to commit ritual suicide as that would be honorable to them. But they haven't the right to do it because they are being denied it by their families and their lords. Hence the conflict. And you must understand the conflict in order to understand these characters. They are torn. So please stop judging their actions by American standards. Because you are using the wrong standards. Think of it as using imperial measuring cups for a recipe that calls for metric measurements. You will always get a nasty cake if you do that.

Wow. Thank you, @micheledeetlefs6041 for giving the most detailed explanation on the inner conflict within Fuji and Mariko. I feel like a lot of people won't immediately get why Fuji and Mariko act the way they do.

Watching the full unedited on Patreon with you both, but viewing in the U.K., it's fun watching your faces in the commercial breaks and trying to imagine what it is you're seeing and responding to - certainly more fun than watching "my own" adverts!! Thanks, as always, for giving me someone to watch televsion with 🍑😃

This show is so damn good. It’s like game of thrones but in Japan with just a nice healthy dose of Ghost of Tsushima.

George Martin took most of his inspiration for Game of Thrones from history, the War of the Roses. Many of the Houses and main characters actually have real world counterparts. That said, GRRM has also said he took a lot of inspiration for the series from this book, Shogun.

The title of Hatamoto means guardian or protector of the flag, an honorable designation for a vassal that proves how important John has become. He will soon become even more important.

I love how John is always "Look I just want my ship and my crew so I can leave" and Toranaga's like, "Let's give the Anjin something nice" and just walks away. Dude, your ship and crew are GONE. 😂

I agree with Jay about what it used to be like watching shit like we used to on TV. The intro's or commercial breaks were always a mad dash to the can or the kitchen to grab snacks! The good ol' days when there was an urgency to make sure you didn't miss anything from what you're watching!

A samurai probably would never dive into the water like that. It would risk losing their swords. They would just jump in, feet first so they can hold onto them. Toranaga was able to dive because he was in a situation where he did not need to carry them.
