That is some true courage. You might be interested to look up Daryl Davis, whose story might not have involved quite that level of courage, but who is still amazing. Davis is a black blues musician who developed a "hobby" of befriending members of the Ku Klux Klan a number of years ago after one started a conversation in a bar where he was playing. Over the years he is credited with having connected well enough with hundreds of them to get them to leave the organization. I understand KZitem's dilemma, but I believe the only way to really defeat prejudice is to get to know the "others" one-to-one. It would be great if social media companies could find a way to pursue that idea.

I don't understand youtube's dilemma here at all. Can you elaborate?
@bjs301

@@bleekcer The dilemma results from the many conflicting interests in play. The social media platforms want to encourage discussion, but avoid being used as a vehicle for those they consider evil actors. They want to add new users, retain old users, avoid alienating advertisers, and keep from being sued or prosecuted. They put policies in place to try to balance these interests,, but then have to apply those policies to a constant stream of situations they were not considering when they formulated them. And the policies are largely implemented by a combination of AI and underqualified staff. I'll sit here and bash KZitem all day, but the fact is they really do have to juggle a lot of competing interests.

@@bjs301 I don't understand what you mean by KZitem should find a way to do that? @bjs301
Жыл бұрын
@@LoveYourself-my9nz That wasn't my point at all, although I think you are wrong thinking that allowing freedom of speech would only negatively influence innocent people. Keep people in the dark about what evil people are saying, and they will be badly ill equipped to refute evil beliefs when they finally hear them. And worse, who defines what is evil? But I thought my point was clear - create a way for people to get to know those with whom they would not otherwise associate (the "others"). I grew up in the 1960s, during a time of real racism and racist strife in America. I lived in a white neighborhood across the street from a black neighborhood. We played together, and a black kid sold me my paper route, which was filled with both white and black customers. Blacks were never "others" to me, and when I retired last year many of my closest friends and work associates were black. Smart social media organizers should think of ways to encourage people of all races, ethnicities, creeds and political persuasions to become friends.

I would normally ask how you’re doing after experiencing this, but I have so many conflicting feeling about it- all of them want you to have been safe, maybe not broken that 4th wall, and you’re aware of the reasons why. Why do we say or do things in the moment? I get it. Growing up in Chicago with a single Jewish mother who was born in Detroit in 1947- my mother was that last generation of children who lived in the same building or a block away from all of her immediate relatives. She was and still is suspicious, angry, proud and fierce- all of this like a bright beacon of light which she has very little control over. And it always in some ways, boldly and definitively states the words, “I’m a Jew”. No matter the situation.

Some people found his background difficult to accept. I think we should judge people by the distance travelled, not just by where they are. Here is hoping. When I was a teenager and living out of home in share houses, I had house mates who were into ska music and would be 'rudies' (Rude boys and rude girls). They quickly though became enmeshed with these types of people and I remember having an all out yelling match with one of them demanding he take his rascist views out of the house. One of them eventually had that flag in their bedroom and it was then for me, I knew it was time to move on out of there. These people are dangerous, awful and deluded. Louis Theroux had/has a few characteristics that made him unique: That allowed him to get away with going into these situations, and making these documentaries without it becoming so controversial and legally threatening, to the point the BBC couldn't show it: 1. Complete impartiality - you never got the impression he was going in with an agenda. Even in the face of people defensive and as self-destructive as these people, he's able to face them openly with no obvious judgment. And in return they respect him, and allow him to do this. This clip is one of the few examples where he lets it slip, and his interviewees detect his agenda 2. He's a likeable and warm personality, and I've always thought that a lot must've been going on behind the scenes that we're not shown, to win these peoples trust. The key factor with Louis was that, when he was young, he had no stated position, had a seemingly open mind, willing to learn. One example - He didn't proudly state to the world "I'm an atheist" to garner respect at the commissioning bodies at the BBC, or state any other pre-held opinion. No "narrowing". In a way he was a throwback to a previous era, when impartiality was valued as a "square one" of all the attributes of a journalist. This seem too obvious to say? The tragic thing of all is we seem to be a long way from that now. Most have retreated into having their pre-held opinions continually reinforced.

The more I watch things related to people who hate a certain group. The more I realize how simple it is. A very strong emotion like hate. Has to be focused somewhere. And that's basically what ppl do. They have this rage inside. And assigning it to something, in a weird way allows you to control it. Allows it to stay dormant in a way and not constantly on the surface. And you can unleash it when it's "required". I don't think they do it consciously of course. That would require self awareness which is absent in these people. I could be way off, It's just a theory that's sort of materialized over time.

Louis is old school journalism brave. Andrew is following right in his footsteps. Thankfully these brave yet gentle people are 6 foot +. I'm guessing it at least makes people think twice as they look UP at these people who are asking them questions that make them want to lash out.

Louis is a badass. Walked into those “people”’s house, definitely outnumbered, told them to respect him and told them their entire belief system is trash 🚮. Major respect!

I remember watching this at the time. It was very unnerving. Also, I was sure that Louis was Jewish, so I was nervous for him. By the way, as is evident by my name, I'm Jewish, which most of the time, I don't get into on different sites, as I don't want to encourage an antisemitic attack against me, especially since I'm also Israeli (and that's usually considered as strike number two).

Yes please analyse more videos about the great Mr Theroux! I'm so sorry you experienced all these issues for this video - as usual, your measured, spot-on analysis is on point. I'm going to 'like' this video anyway, so take that, KZitem gods! :)

Excellent Andrew ❤ you really have come out as a polished journalist. Forgive me but when you joined Shaun I just felt you were not so much wet between the ears but a little soft focus on the story so to speak. Anyway , regardless I have always had a soft spot for you because you are a decent human being so this is a plus star for you and you tube can do one with their incriminating ways of what I call lack of freedom of speech guards of hell type of organisation. So ! Well done ❤ P.S. I was a photo journalist for a quarter of a Century and a sharp ear on the true justice of the world and I would say that you are pretty good. So hats off to you.

I watched this some time ago and remember the tension and fear I felt for Louis. I didn’t know at the time whether Louis was Jewish or not but it was certainly an eye opener for me that these kinds of extremist people exist. I know more now probably through age/ life experience and the internet. I have family who are Jewish and also by the way Chinese and Indian family members so while I know about their experiences, it’s not the same as having to live with it. I’m glad you were able to repost this , thank you

I'm misgendered a lot my whole life. When people get confused, not knowing how to address me, that's my answer "it doesn't matter". I only correct them if it's relevant, which it hardly ever is.

"That's why you've got so much animosity...never mind that I commit hate crimes against strangers and poison my babies' minds with bigotry..." How are some people so unself-aware? It's like they TRY not to be insightful.

Been watching Louis for years - I hadn’t seen this one! Super eye-opening! It’s a shame these despicable people were not open to discussion - reminded me of film GenerationX. I still remember when I saw Louis’s JSaville doc. It was so toe-curling, grimy and dark and I felt for poor Louis!

This was very interesting. I'm normally very open about my ancestry, but have, from time to time, in similar, but not as frightening, situations, "got my back up", and refused to say that I was not Jewish. It does happen. Glad there were no further fireworks. Same goes for ones sexuality these days.

Me too, he'd be sitting at the head of my table. I subscribed to Andrew's channel a few months ago as I enjoy his style of interviewing. I could see Theroux's influence and liked him for it. I watched this documentary several years ago and found it very chilling. Louis has put himself in some worrying situations. His Scientology documentary was brilliant. Well done Andrew! As he always does, he played it so well. He has the ability to disarm his subjects. He does take risks though. It's not the first time I've worried for him. He held out on telling him his religion. What a brilliant documentarian he is. I really hope that they don't go after your channel. This is important. This is what is happening NOW. If we can't take a hard look at ourselves how do we help the world?

I associate “gonzo journalism” with Hunter Thompson, starting with his mid-1960’s book on the “Hell’s Angels” through his iconic 1970’s-era “Fear and Loathing” books and others. All of these are after the Beat-era period.

What I don't understand is why being Jewish is any different to being catholic or protestant. They are simply religions. Perhaps if the Jewish religion stopped portraying themselves as being more than just a religion it would help barrow the divide. If a dead body or a person suffering from amnesia is found, there is no way to detect with 100% certainty if that person is/was jewish.

Wow! What an amazing look into a F***d up situation. People who hate other people for no reason and no knowledge of that person sickens me. There’s still too much this or other hate going on. My true hope is that their children are ok and maybe, just maybe didn’t become like their parents. I know this was a long time ago but it would be interesting to go back and see how the children turned out. What do you think? Has anyone ever went back to check? Take care!
