I think this game would be better if it went the subtle route in horror. Like have nothing really happening but just random house creeking here and there. Then something that can put someone off guard like foot steps above you or a hand out a window that moves away.

I have to mention it isn't just jump scares but also dark moody, creepy immersive atmosphere and soundscapes and soundtracks etc sound and visuals and feelings of controls leaving the player feeling vulnerable and not superhuman implies sense of danger. I find getting chased unarmed by monsters in claustrophobic spaces or even dark transitional open dark spaces with bushes and tress pretty terrifying and adrenaline pumping. Creepy environment design gets the tension and unease in the player going. Horror is a very fine careful art and line to get right. Resident Evil and Amnesia are series with great horror and survival horror elements that actually can get pretty intense and scary like the first time going through RE4 remake. Plenty of Amnesia dark descent custom campaigns were terrifying too phew in the past even watching favourite couple youtubers at the time play them. I guess what I am saying is it's a craft that is misunderstood and even good story telling as well as environment, sound design and scripted and dynamic random sequences all add to the affect on the player. Startling them or even creeping them out with maliciously creepy environments that feel uncomfortable to even explore. Vulnerability and making the player feel depowered to be scared is key. Putting the player under threat and stress and pressure.

The thing about games like this is it’s easy to not be frightened when your watching chat or memeing sounds and doing other things besides playing the game. I will be honest there was a couple times it got me and many times it didn’t. But making games like this are tough because people can’t just play the game. They gotta be on their phone, or texting or whatever.
