Yeah, it says that the expensive boutique bridge is garbage… literally disabled/made unusable from a small piece of debris… that’s terrible that replacing the entire system was the easier thing to do than clean/fix it.
@maxpeck4154
3 жыл бұрын
wasn't the bridge, it was the vibrato. The tolerances are super tight and the arm snaps into place, unlike SOME Fender equivalents that merely push into place, clunk and rattle, etc. Its not "boutique" per se, it's a much better version of the offset vibrato mousetrap. A blast of canned air likely would've remedied the issue, but Novo did the good faith thing and replaced it. And Rhett is right, you are not supposed to remove it. Leave it in when cased. I have one on my JM and it's glorious.

Robert the thing with the Novo, at least the Serus J, is that it is so nice to play right away but then it grows on you even more afterwards. It is a musicians guitar. I would have never thought I would own a "pine" guitar. I have 40ish guitars, none are pine, but I'm now a believer. I have one of the last non distressed ones that Novo was offering. It's an Ice Blue Metallic and I sprung for block inlays and neck binding, I went with Lollar Minis. It is a phenomenal guitar.

Some guitars have that extra 10% and you just have to buy them. I've almost exclusively played the same Les Paul for the past 27 years, but that changed earlier this year when I found the best Strat I've ever played in my life. It also happens to be the best guitar I've ever played too - it has vibe in spades. This is coming from a guy who never got on with Strats my whole life, and now my main guitar is a Strat.
@CorbCorbin
3 жыл бұрын
I came across a 98’ Fender Strat, that was a stock American standard from that year, and it just had a feel that was perfect, and I thought it sounded great through any amp I used. A friend owned it, and he ended up giving it to me for what he paid for it, and I’ve played it for over a decade now. It’s what I compare any other guitar I’m playing or thinking about buying. There are mods that most people do with them, but I’ve kept it stock and it’s only needed soldering or work of any kind once. I fix the action or have it setup when it’s time, but it stays in tune really well, and the action is just excellent.

Before I say what I’m gonna say I mark this situation down as a fluke. I am not a master builder, and it just worked out perfect. The only guitar I’ve found that has that extra 10% for me is the one that I made myself, and I’m glad that it worked out like that. Not a partscaster or any of that, actually handmade it. I’ve made a couple others since, but none have had the wow factor of that first build I did.

I tried to like Strats, but the tone isn't really my thing, but it definitely has its place. Despite that, the only reason I dont own one anyway is the volume pot placement,..The knob is tragically in my way. It is a deal breaker. I've been playing for 39 years and live gigging for the past 26 years and know countless players that have the exact same issue that I have with the Strat.

One of my best sounding and playing guitars is a early 90s’ Mexican strat made of poplar wood with SD-1 Korean knock offs. I have had musicians play it that have Shurs, etc. They are surprised of the feel of it . It is hard to find that extra 10% from a variety of guitars .

This is such a wonderful video! My Novo Serus J was made at the same time that yours was. Novo even posted a picture of our guitars together way back when. I got mine in a very similar manner. I played it at CME, and I instantly knew I had to have it, but I didn’t have the money. I live 2 hours from Chicago, so I went home very saddened. I just couldn’t get the guitar out of my mind, so the next weekend I drove back to Chicago, traded 4 of my guitars and paid some money on top, but I got it! It was a joyous event, and I adore the guitar to this day. It was originally made for Josh Scott at JHS, but he didn’t like the amber tint coat over the Olympic White, so he sent it back after using it as a demo guitar at NAMM that year. Dennis then sold it to CME, luckily, so now it is one of the best guitars that I have ever played/owned. Mine has three Porter A90 pickups. Novo forever!

I found I guy selling a Fender Tele Mex for a fair price, rushed to send a massage, finished to work early and basically ran where he was (working close to my house and he had the guitar). Great story and great advice about listening to that inner voice. I'm going through a similar situation. Last year I was going to buy a Godin with P90s when the pandemic hit. I saw one in the local music store here in Montreal. A friend said a band mate of his worked at Godin and I could probably get a deal on the one I wanted. While we were trying to connect to make it happen, I was visiting friends in Quebec City where I stopped by the local music store and on the wall was a PRS 30th anniversary Hollowbody SE. My wife suggested I try it. I played one chord and new it was special. After about ten minutes, I knew it was the one. It immediately became my new number one. I'll be launching my own KZitem channel very soon. I would have already done it but I landed a role in a movie I couldn't pass up so I have to figure out how to juggle it all.

I have a how I found "My #1" guitar story, except it's about my #1 Bass. I happened to see a video of Geddy Lee talking about his new Signature Fender Jazz Bass. I was impressed with how he described how he found his "#1" 1972 Jazz Bass, and how he felt he very accurately duplicated this bass with Fender's expert help. I had to have one, but could not afford it at the time. Fortunately I found a new, "Open Box", returned item, Geddy Lee Jazz Bass that I could barely afford. I bought it, but it arrived in damaged condition. It smelled very, very smokey, like it had somehow survived a house fire. I played it, and it sounded magnificent! I kept it and spent weeks polishing the smokey smell out of this truly unique "fire survivor." I have more money now, and have bought several Jazz Basses, and NOTHING sounds and plays (even unplugged) like that bass. It will forever be my very incredible sounding/playing "#1."

in the mid 1980s I walked into a music shop in Fullerton CA to buy a cable. On the wall was am50s Gibson Byrdland. I had never heard of one and it wasn't a Strat, so I wasn't really interested. But it had a price tag of something like $25,000, so I was curious. I asked permission to play it and pulled it down and played it for like 15 min. It was an extraordinary guitar and it played and felt great. But truthfully it was so expensive that it was not even a consideration to buy it. I *still* don't have that kinda money. I walked out and every fiber of my body was on fire. The back of my neck itched like crazy. That guitar had 'it', whatever 'it' is, and I felt an incredible connection. I have never forgotten that day or that feeling

Speaking of that thing that happens when you play the right guitar... I always wanted to build one and finally got the chance when I graduated with my doctorate. I got my wife and our families to kick in for tools, wood and parts. Honestly I didn't think the guitar would be very good. I had only ever made a box that wouldn't close and a coat tree that fell over when you put a coat on it so I was going to be happy if it played at all. It came out way better than I ever could have hoped for. I made the five piece multi lam neck, the fretboard, cut slots, installed leveled and crowned the frets and installed the truss rod, cut the nut and everything myself. The only thing I didn't do was wind the pickups. I put a hum sized p90 in the neck and a slightly overwound PAF in the bridge with coil tap. I have not touched another of my guitars since I finished it. The Iron Gear pickups blew my mind. They are clear, strong and sound so musical. I'm about to undertake another build, this time with true p90's I will wind myself. I had enough wood left over for at least two more, so I'm doing two at once and will spec them a little differently. My only hope is they sound and play anywhere near as good as my first.

I can somehow relate to this, but in a sad way. I used to play in a band. Our bassist ran a small guitar shop and a few times we gathered there to practice. In order not to waste time in traffic jams, I once got there by motorcycle without my own gear and asked if I could borrow a guitar from the store. He handed me a PRS guitar and plugged it into some tube amp I don't even remember the brand. But I instantly became a better player. That guitar was so good to play and suited me very well. Unfortunately the guitar was a bit expensive for me (2200 euros) and I had just bought a Strat from him a few weeks before, so it was not reasonable even considering buying it. Few months later, our beloved bassist killed himself. I'll never get to see him again, and I'll never get to play that guitar again. I wish circumstances would have lead to me buying it. That would have been a joy to have it and a nice memory of our bass player who really was a great guy. Still have the strat though, but although I like how it sounds, it isn't that great to play as it's quite impossible not to have it fret buzzing. Can't fall in love with it the way I expected to. I hope that I'll someday be able to afford a PRS and that it will be as nice as this one was.

Many guitars later... A kid called up and asked if I had a BB King 345 - He asked me to meet on a street in San Francisco where he was jamming with friends, he wanted to trade for his strat that was very sweet, according to him. I drove down, got parked, walked over and in ten seconds decided it was too big a loss for me to take the deal. A couple minutes of playing Sweet Home Chicago and I took the strat home, turns out it was a 65 custom shop and the best guitar deal I ever made. A week after the Strat deal a friend sold me a gold top Les Paul but I did not like it, a friend of a friend called and asked about the Les Paul and had a trade from a new builder that built guitars in his garage. The guitar was build by Tom Anderson with triple hum buckers, Wow, once again the guitar was plugged into my Fender 57 twin and from the first note blew me away. Now when folks talk about what is great I pay attention.

About 35 years ago I went to buy my firs electric guitar at a little guitar shop called Machinehead Music north of London UK. I fell in love with a Gordon Smith Gypsy 2 semi solid. It had a lovely responsive dynamic tone but but didn’t have the money to buy. So I bought a cheaper solid body but because I only play at church at relatively low volumes the guitar never shone. In the end I sold it and basically stopped playing. Anyway, I saw one advertised in Hamburg Germany on Reverb just recently and bought it. It’s just come back from the luthier and plays like a dream - just like I remember. I am so happy!

I recently pulled the trigger on a new acoustic. The most expensive guitar I've ever bought, and not the kind of guy who can afford boutique anything except the once-a-year pedal, and even then no strymons or the like. I love this guitar. All day at work where I play a true, vintage American horn and professional grade trumpet while teaching, I think about how much time I'll get to play before I have to go to bed or do other adult stuff. It's my oasis at the end of the day. It brings out music I've never written or songs I've never attempted before. It makes my old "standards" feel brand new. I find myself holding it almost horizontally so I can better hear the tones coming out of it. (No, I would never buy a "player port" guitar like that of a certain brand that so many have been reviewing lately. Mine comes from the same company but without the gimmicks.) It's just unreal when or if you get the chance to buy a guitar that "clicks", even if it means cinching the old belt and purse strings. When you love playing guitar, having the chance to invest in something that is clearly more than a piece of gear can really be an investment in your own well-being. As long as you aren't doing it too often...

I hated the look of that guitar when I first saw some of your videos, but it has since grown on me and I really dig the way it looks and sounds now. I’ll have to take your word on how well it plays.

I have a similar story with my Martin Accoustic. Walked into a random guitar shop in a random town on a trip. Now I've played hundreds of gigs with it, written songs on it, earned money etcetc. You never know when it happens :)

You can literally see love in Rhett's eyes when he looks at the guitar. That "thing" is real, nobody can explain that connection between one and a piece of gear.

Ignazio here, from Jensen Speakers. Dennis Fano is one of the most amazing and original guitar designers and builders outta there. So much innovation in his designs, and still they feel familiar. Unique looking yet not "strange for the sake of being strange". Tone for days, super accurate selection of materials and parts and incredible finishes. What's not to love? Lovely story about your Serus J, Rhett! And agree so much about the "epiphany" moment. When the click happens you really should consider it. Many of the world's top builders say that the decision of buying a high-end guitar over another is almost invariably ignited in the first 10 seconds of playing. I played a few of the original Fano guitars, and all were special. Played only one Novo, and it was astounding. One day, hopefully...

I so, so, wish I still had my first Fender Stratocaster!! From the early, early 80s maybe even late 70s not sure. It was the model when Fender decided to replace one of the tone knobs with the cable plug-in. So it didn’t have the traditional slanted style plug-in like every other Strat has, and it was missing a tone knob. But it was still 100% Fender Stratocaster and I absolutely loved that guitar! I was 14 or 15 when my dad bought it for me straight off the rack in Muskogee Oklahoma about 30 minutes from our house in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, capital city of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. Yes I am Cherokee as is 90% of everyone from Tahlequah. I eventually lost it to the pawn shop monster when I was 18 or 19. Never saw it again or another one like it (with the crazy plug-in and missing tone knob). It was black with a maple fretboard and was the second guitar I ever owned. Oh, how I wish I could do some things differently.

I just recently missed out on my dream acoustic guitar. To me it sucks, that I'm not the one that got it. But, at the same time, I'm not the caliber of guitarist it deserved. I'm glad you didn't miss out.

Here's what I love about this thing. This guitar is the furthest from what would be my go-to guitar as it ever could be. Sure I could rock with it and I have in fact made me one myself that is sort of similar, mastery and tv jones pick ups, strat shape. But nonetheless this isn't what I gravitate towards. But I absolutely love that someone thinks this is their absolute best guitar, their ultimate treasure of their guitar collection. Because the thing is, and should be, that you play the guitars that inspire you, talk to you and you talk through them. Nothing else should matter. And that is the beauty of it.

It's a lucky man that finds the "one" . You instantly know it's a perfect vehicle for expression of your soul . Music transcends the written and spoken word and allows communication on a completely different level of emotional expression.

Great story Rhett. My instrument obsession story: 2.5 yrs ago I bought a drum kit that I had been obsessed with for about a year and a half. I had been playing the Roland TD-50 electronic kit at a couple different stores once or twice a week. It was musical heaven to play, and being a new drummer I was making gains every time I sat down with the sticks. But I couldn’t justify the price tag... 470,000 yen here in Tokyo (around 4,000 USD) “...And I’m not really even a drummer!” But… But I couldn’t stop thinking about the kit, returning to the shops week after week to play it again (the sales guys got to know me a bit), fantasizing about it, talking to friends about my dilemma, journaling about it, questioning the price... Finally I realized that this was a SOUL thing, not just a mere desire. “What the hell is this human life even for?” I asked. “To live out my deepest truth.” was the answer. For me, playing this instrument is pure joy. It’s PLAY in the best sense - play that is animated by my heart, my gut, and SPIRIT. 2.5 yrs later, daily communion is taking me deeper and deeper, higher and higher...

I bought a v similar specced custom sparkly Novo Serus J recently, purely based on seeing you and yours! I loved yours straightaway. Of course on the order form. the answer to the question “how did you first hear about Novo”…. was simple…..Rhett Shull….I hope the artists bonus payments at Novo are sizeable! A Rhett Shull signature would be the absolute business!

Rhett, to your point, the Serus spoke to me. I saw and heard a guy playing one at a local gig not too long ago after watching a ton of your videos and especially this one and I was hooked. Damn you Rhett.. Damn you :-) I just sent the folks at Novo my $500 deposit for my custom build. Will be a grueling 12 month wait but they ( Devon ) was very helpful with his suggestions and a few minor tweaks. You were not joking about the price. I chose to custom it out and wait the extra 9 months over a select get exactly what i wanted and it came it at $4200.. If i was going to spend over 3k on a 3 month wait predefined one might as well go ahead and buy once and cry once and get what I want. Cant wait. I have a home in Asheville and know you are there from time to time. Would love to buy you a beer and talk shop. Good stuff.. Keep up the great content.

It's gorgeous, I wish I could buy in to something like that. Like a pre Nashville Kalamazoo gibson, or pre gibson mandolin-guitar co. made in his pre 1900s shop That guitar will be worth double very soon. Maybe even triple. I'm glad he's got the right mentality. Never ever sell it. It's priceless in your hands.

A friend who worked at GC Hollywood called me and said you need to see this used Strat, I drove the 2 1/2 hours to find a Greg Fessler Fender Masterbuilt that was heavily distressed. I tuned it up to pitch and strummed it unplugged and was floored at the resonance, I recorded it with an IPhone voice memo and when people hear the voice memo they swear the chord progression is played on an acoustic. Some just have magic and I won’t ever sell it.
