I do think the blue of the neck feathers was a lovely choice. Very striking.

I do think more inspiration should come from the feathers found on ratites and silky chickens which have a mutation that altered their feathers to not zip together when people are reconstructing not avian dinosaurs. Like emus especially have funky feathers. The very first time I saw one as a child I thought to myself, this is what dinosaurs were covered with. Not because people thought dinosaurs were feathered at the time, but because I thought that dinosaurs looked a lot like birds and that they probably had a body covering and I couldn't believe it when there was a real animal that looked like what I expected. If you have not touched an emu yet I highly recommend it because they're feathers feel like frayed scales.

You should approach the nearest zoo keeper and with mock outrage exclaim, "a derived Orithomimid, with a dew claw?! for shame!"

Nah, they're just trying to get through the work day. Likely didn't have anything to do with the dinosaurs other than maybe setup anyway.

As far as I’m aware, ornithomimosaurs did have pennaceous feathers. I’d have to look into it more but I remember reading about a fossil found with pennaceous feathers preserved (maybe from North America?) but I’m not sure which genus off the top of my head. I know a lot of very credible paleoartists depict them with pennaceous feathers so I doubt that’s based on nothing. Edit: Zelenitsky et Al, 2012 report filamentous feathers forming wings on adult Ornithomimus.

Yeah I wouldn't believe that's feathers. I highly doubt they are. Those Penn feathers are just collagen breakdown in the skin

How is there always such a disconnect between modern reconstructions and 3d modelers/molders?
@KhanMann66

Because science changes all the time so the manufacture has a hard time keeping up. They tried and that’s what counts even if it’s inaccurate.

I do wondwe how they design these reconstructions. Do they approach an expert or do they just wing it from some unknown piece of paleoart?🤔

-Sometimes research is paywalled and the sculptor cant access it -Sometimes research is constantly conflicting eachother (spinosaurus...) -Sometimes there is miscommunication between the lead sculpter and the team -Sometimes the higher ups tell you to pluck that chicken despite it being fossilised fully feathered cause thats what people want to see -Sometimes compromise has to be made for the inner mechanisms. -Sometimes the deadline is tight so you dont have time to fully research the smaller details so you make a best guess -Sometimes the model was made 10-20 years ago but theyre very expensive to replace so you just keep using them with a little placard explaining what scientists now think they look like.
