I purchased the 3M sander after watching reviews on youtube, yours included. It died a few months after light use. It also generated quite a bit of static electricity using it with both a festool and then a 3M extractor. Took a month to get a replacement, but it was done under warranty. I was told they “some problems” with the first generation, and the replacement would not have the same issues. Six months later, the replacement sander is dead. It works well when it works, but I would suggest avoiding it.

A more apt comparison on the Festool end would be the ETS 125 or 150 EC line, not the ETS 150. The EC models have a quieter, lower profile, and more powerful brushless motor just like the 3M and mirka, and you can choose between 3 and 5 mm orbits. Only main difference is the lack of a paddle switch. Would love to see a comparison with this model and the mirka for a true apples to apples.

I agree it is more apt. I only have around 100 hours on my 3M, but more than that on the ETS line. I personally give the edge to the 3M. I have cubital tunnel in both arms and I can go almost an hour longer on the 3M than the ETS before the pain is too much. Dust collection on the 3M is better as well. This is anecdotal I realize, but having used both for long enough to know, the 3M is about 11% better. :)

To me, as a hobbyist who's budget is smaller than all the Woodpecker tool users, that price is out of my range. I avoid so much sanding by using a card scraper and/or a smoothing plane. I avoid vibration issues by holding my DeWalt at the hose and a couple of fingertips on top of the sander. If you don't like that idea, get some anti-vibration gloves. I hook my sander up to my shop vac and that noise is much worse than my sander. On goes the hearing protection. My favorite way to do that is with noise cancelling headphones.

I'll stick to my $19.99 Bauer. You better be making money with your dust and chios to spend that kind of cash. If your hand/arm are sore after 20 minutes of sanding, you may be putting too much pressure on your sander. I'd also recommend a little money on an adjustable height table. A comfortable and varying height can help a lot with fatigue.

I would be interested to know what the longterm support 3M guarantees would be. You could have a Festool RO150 from 15 years ago and the new version of the sanding pads still work on it. That is an often overlooked benefit of Festool, they keep support for their tools for years.

I’m a little skeptical that you’re putting the cart before the horse with this product. It’s coming into the market to compete with pro level sanders and a pro level price. A product like this has to be considerably better than the long standing competition. If you look around at reviews from online retail sites, it’s getting 4/5 stars at best. Its got a 1.8/5 rating on 3m’s own website. It’s gotta be 5/5 stars for a guy like me to buy a brand new, unvetted, product over the Festool or mirka offerings.

I've been a heavy woodworking machinery repairman for years, and now and again I'd be handed a boxful of dead or dying power tools, they're not my specialty but for a good customer I'd do it. I factor in things like spares availability, ease of use, effectiveness, finish, durability, and standard of manufacture. The sander died with only week-end use. Some died just shortly after the warranty had expired. They all sang the same praises as you and each review was followed by a standard response from 3M. As curious as I am about this sander, I won't be purchasing one. It's just too much $$ to risk on something that gets 1.5 stars on the manufacturer's own website and will end up in the "parts box".

I’ve been in and out of job sites for 30 years. I really don’t see the advantage of a disconnected cord. Maybe I’m missing something. it just seems one more thing to lose or get broken.

What dust exstractor do you use with the 3m sander? Are the 3m connectors compatible with Festool or other extractors?

I currently have a 16 gallon dewalt shop vac. Is there a specific attachment needed for the 3M xtract sander to connect to this shop vac? Thanks for your help. Cheers 🍻

I think Rockler sells a universal adapter that will work.

Please compare to the pneumatic counterpart. Fyi, it's less than 250 bucks.

Have you had to replace the pad. Mine has worn out, is it just as easy as grabbing the pad and unscrewing counter clockwise

Anybody notice excessive vibration and noise from this 3m 6" sander when using an interface pad?

you actually said 3M was an UPGRADE from the Festool! Wow.

Wow. I would love to have it but man is it priced at a premium level. I take belt sander to cut down on sanding the switch to orbital but it is a pain. Thank you for the great video 😊

Matt, Bought this sander due to your high praise shortly after after you posted this video last year. Sander was great for a few months. After that, it started glitching and overheating. Now I’m lucky if it will run for 30 minutes before it quits. I’m trying to finish a desk for my son and now need a replacement. I went on 3M’s website where it’s sitting at 1.7 stars due to the same issues. Reviews on Amazon also highlight the same issue with little to no response or support from 3M. This sander is junk and 3M needs to go back to the drawing board. I love your videos for your honesty and integrity. I would ask you to take a look and assess if you would still recommend this sander today and if this video should have a caveat highlighting the reliability of this tool. I wish I had bought the Festool and had the backing of the 3 year warranty. Lesson learned!

Thank you for giving me the feedback. Mine hasn't experienced any issues yet. I'm sorry you've had problems with yours. Did you try to get it fixed under warranty?

I do a lot of sanding but I just can’t justify that price and I also turn my sander upside down and use it like that sometimes that’s why I don’t like the paddle on the 3M. As soon as you turn it upside down it’s on .you don’t have control to turn it off unless you lift it

You could have used a glass of water to test vibrations. Either against the body of the sander or on the work piece.
