Yo Lou. When you started talking about putting trees in a small hole. I do the same thing for my trees here in NC 100% red clay. To big of a hole my tree drowns during the rainy season. Small hole they grow slower but they do not die. Now I know your the first I've ever heard of putting fruit trees in small holes.

Hi Lou. Great video. I know you have covered potted figs in the past but if you can do a video similar to this for the potted ones, it would be great. For instance, how do you get maximum fig production and keep the potted figs small? Suggestions?
@loumonti10
3 ай бұрын
Well, first, I might suggest not to move up to a bigger than needed pot too soon. I would discourage doing that. With container growing what you add to your mix is extremely important if you want to produce impressive results. I have several videos on this subject that you are certainly welcome to watch. Thanks for watching! Lou Monti

I missed the spring planting window for putting my figs in-ground because of events, but hope to get some in ground this fall. I lost several of my potted figs over winter so I don't want to try to depend on potted figs and the options I have for keeping them.

Hi Julie! I understand you exactly. However, it is possible to successfully transplant smaller fig trees this late if you try using my cover method. I demonstrate that method in a recent video. Thanks for watching! Lou Monti

Been following your suggestions since I started cuttings last spring in Z9A/B. So far everything is working great. My 17 trees are 4-6’ tall and loaded. Haven’t pinched or pruned yet. Started eating RDB, Black Celeste and St Rita last week and had my first two Smiths this morning. All tasted great but the Smith… oh my the Smith! I had that nectar dripping everywhere

Dear Mr. Monti, I just want to reach out and say I appreciate all of your videos and follow each and every single one. I love hearing all your advice, stories, wisdom, and fig experiences. I know you know the subject well! I can tell. I love hearing your enthusiasm and passion for figs and I can honestly say I've learned so much from you. I am also in NJ and so I bought a few of your best producers from what I gathered from many of your videos and in-depth conversations. I currently am doing the ground bag method with a few of my figs thanks to you and they have a bunch of figs growing on them! I'm just so excited. Thank you so much again Mr. Monti. I know you don't sell cuttings which I get on so many levels but I wish I had your father's Celeste tree in my collection as it looks so special. I'm planning on getting a Celeste variety soon thanks to you. Do you have any recommendations when it comes to Celeste in NJ? Thanks again Mr. Monti!

Thanks for all your videos and sharing your fig Orchard! I was born in Argentina and we had a fig tree in our backyard when I was a kid, I used to love eating that fig, the taste of it was so good! now living in the USA after 45 years and started growing figs I couldn't find that taste in all my 20 fig trees that I'm growing ,until I had a Ronde de Bordeaux plant that you recommended in one of your videos and after tasting the fig it produced ,it reminded me of that fig from back in my youth now I have almost 30 fig trees all in pots here in zone 6B, got rid of some but replaced most of them with RDB's just love that fig! maybe it's not the exact tree or variety we had there but everytime I eat one it takes me back to my youth.Thanks again!

I loved it! My trees have died back to the ground 3 years in a row here in 7b New Mexico. They regrow, but stay in the growing mode each season. Since they are so young, would you advise me to thin the growths? I feel more leaves, more chlorophyl to make the plant grow and, on a couple i pulled, they had roots so, if anything, they are not taking from the dominant growth, but are increasing the mass of the tree at a critical time. This is one of your great teaching videos.

I’ve had nurseries tell me to dig a hole three times a size of your tree then they gave you a bag of something that they want to sell and tell you to mix it in with the dirt then plant your tree and water well if you’re planting in sand OK if you’re soil is hard like mine is here in California you will drown that tree water won’t soak in. I’ve heard him tell other people that too.
@loumonti10

@cliftonmcandrew8984 Hi, Clifton! Well, I can't say that I agree with them. It's a far too complex issue to attempt to tackle by text. I do have videos on this topic. However, I certainly would never advise planting in sand if you have any other choice! Thr root Knot Nematode thrives in sandy soil. As for your hard soil, I'd dig a narrow, deep hole and plant my fig tree in it. Digging deep will allow for future drainage, and digging narrow will compact the roots and result in a far more fruitful tree. Thanks for watching, and thanks for your comment. Thanks for watching. Great tour Lou very interesting.Im in Mass. And my brebas almost never hold they deform and fall off any idea why ?
@loumonti10
3 ай бұрын
Hi, Rocco! My guess would be that it's a bit too cold for Breba to overwinter there. Even here, in N.J., zone 7-A, the Breba of many varieties succumb to our harsh winters. Only the Breba of several hardy varieties are able to make it through to Spring. Thanks for watching! Warm regards from Lou Monti
