Spunding (prv) valve is totally necessary to avoid foaming in the keg if you fermented under pressure. Great vid.

If you have the fermenter above the keg and attach a second jumper line from the keg back to the fermenter, it'll transfer without the need to push with co2. Just pressurise the fermenter a bit so you have a pressure gradient between the fermenter and keg.

You can also connect your jumper to a sanitised keg before fermentation, (fermenter CO2 out to the keg beer out), and use the excess co2 produced by fermentation to purge your keg. You will then know for sure the no sanitiser dregs left in the keg. Pressure is controlled by putting the spending valve on the keg co2 post. This will save on a keg full of Starsan and a keg full of bottle co2.

I’ve always wanted to do that but I’m usually a bit behind on my keg cleaning and don’t have a keg clean and ready for it when I brew. I could use a couple more kegs in my rotation so I can do this because using natural CO2 would be way more cost effective!! Thanks!
@struco

You can also then hook the keg back up to the gas-in on the fermenter when transferring to eliminate the need for any tank CO2 at all.

I use 70+°C water. The sanitizer leaves a distinct taste IMO. Also the 70+ water has a potential disolved oxygen value of less than 3000 ppb. Which means the residual liquid in the keg will give barely any oxygen to the beer
@fifis101

I think the better way to do it is to just use gravity. That way you aren't just wasting more CO2.

Question for you! I did this yesterday between my two kegs (fermented in a keg and transferred to a serving keg) but came across a problem. After I got to the point were I wanted to stop transferring my beer I did know how to stop the flow of beer so that it is safe to disconnect the liquid "jumper cable." I removed the gas but when I removed the jumper cable, beer started gushing out . How do I keep this from happening?
@ElementaryBrewingCo
2 жыл бұрын
Well, I usually disconnect the gas first too then just take the jumper off of either keg. Do you think the popit on the disconnect got stuck? If that happened then ya beers going to go everywhere. But that has not ever happened to me, at least not when racking to a keg.

Do you fill the whole keg with with 5G of starsan? and then pump all of it out? I put 3ish gallons in shake a bunch for 10 mins and the dump till there is about a gallon and pump that out.
@ElementaryBrewingCo
2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes, but not usually. I just shake and let it sit for a bit as well. If I was going to let it sit for a few days I try to fill it up that way there’s not as much head space.

@davec4955
Жыл бұрын
Place your fermenter on top of the fridge, make sure the pressure in the fermenter and the keg are equal, with a purged gas jumper line connect the gas ports on the keg and the fermenter, then with purged liquid jumper line connect the two liquid posts. Then briefly lift the pressure release valve on the keg to start the flow of beer and let gravity do the rest. It's a saves wasting that CO2 that you paid for. 🍻

For sure! Depends on which fermenter I use but I’ve started doing it that way as well, definitely saves CO2!

The only real way would be to go off of weight. Weigh the keg when it’s full, then put it on a scale when you’re filling and stop when it gets to that weight. I just eyeball it based on what’s left in the fermenter because I never really make a batch larger than 5 gallons.

There's nothing wrong about oxygen touching your beer in the older days beer had a little oxidation plus there brew was better because they had more flavors in the beer
