I don’t see why more people don’t jump on the sampling hype. For the price of one blind bought niche bottle you can sample like 40 or 50 fragrances - which imo is waaay more fun to explore and discover. Plus each 1ml will give you a couple of wearings so it’s kinda like having each scent actually in your collection. Wear one a day and that’ll keep you going for a couple of months almost... Of course it can also be just as addictive (if not more) so you gotta keep it in check, but it can be way more fun than blind buying bottles if done right imo. 🙌🏻

Bro I love your content ! I think this is the very first time I may have a slightly different perspective than you especially on points 4&5. I think it can take even more than a few hours to really know if you truly love a fragrance or not. Some fragrances have taken me MONTHS heck even a year or two to really appreciate what I was smelling. Just my perspective!

There is validity to that. But I believe there’s a fine line between giving a fragrance a chance or two, and forcing yourself to find it enjoyable. What you’re talking about is perhaps revisiting fragrances you initially disliked, which is a different conversation in my opinion. 👌🏾

I love discovery sets. Getting them has some of the thrill of blind buying. But they're all about being a more informed consumer. And I've never regretted a discovery set purchase. Even if none of the fragrances in the set much move me (Gallivant discovery set, I'm looking at you), I end up with knowledge of a house I didn't know before and a more refined sense of what I do and don't like. Of course, if a bunch of fragrances prove to be appealing to me, then I've created more problems for myself (damn you, Rogue discovery set!).
@SirSillageSniffington

Truth, absolute truth. 🙌🏻 Sampling > blind buying imo, way more fun to me. Gotta agree with you on the Gallivant set as well - I think that’s the issue when a house only uses 1 perfumer with a distinct style... if you dislike one or two of their scents you’re likely to dislike them all (same with Ormonde Jayne, I’m not the biggest fan of Geza Schoen’s style). 😅 The London one is aight’ I guess...

Great advice Justin. I would add two things. Get to know the notes and learn what you love, dislike and are anomic to. Get to know the perfumers and their style. Certain houses have a particular DNA that can also be helpful. All of these things may change over time but it can save you time and money as you begin discovering things that you love. Thank you ❤

Excellent video. As someone with around 25 bottles who never sampled, and blind bought most of what I own, I can say that whilst I know my own tastes well enough that I love a lot of my purchases, there are many that I simply 'like' abd don't get as much wear, and a couple that I don't wear at all. Having followed these tips would have saved me time and money I could have saved or spent finding new loves

I started my collection in March this year & I now have 11 bottles of fragrances I love. 10 are designers, but I have made a list of some niche fragrances that interest me, that I will buy samples of. I am trying to go for a collection of fragrances that I will actually wear & get through the bottles at some point!

Amazing tips for begginers in this hoby. Problem is, people usually realize this to late 😅, including me. Got 2-3 fragrances that im not really using that much. Also, i have one tip im using when deciding should i buy a fragrance or not. I Ask myself a question, do i have a fragrance for that occasion, and if i do, Is this new fragrance better then the ones i already got (do i like it more, smell wise). If not, im not buying it.

I don't know if anyone else has had this experience, but I've purchased fragrances before that at first I thought they were fine but didn't really excite me in any way. And then I revisited them months later and it was like smelling a new fragrance. I don't know what happened over that time period but all the sudden I loved the way it smelled. I can't figure it out but I've learned not to give up on something right away.

My views on fragrances often change, which makes it an interesting hobby. I recently noticed that my 10 favourite ones are not ones i found through youtube. Even though i watched a ton. Because of that i have become more confident in being my own judge in finding something i love. I personally also have become less interested in the fragrances everybody mentioned as i think the point of having a niche fragrance disappears when you wear the same as everybody else

This method is nearly exactly what I do when deciding on any new fragrance, but especially when they cost a lot. Thanks to this, I'm only out the cost of a sample of Xerjoff 40 Knots while also knowing I want to save up for Amouage Beach Hut Man.

Excluding travel size/decants, I have 48 fragrances. My current fragrance rankings of my collection have my wife's favorite of mine at #30 and her second favorite (and my daughter's favorite) at #41. I wear them almost exclusively when I'm at home with them or occasionally out with one or both of them. I do, in fact, really like both, but they aren't ones I reach for if my wife and/or my daughter aren't going to be around me for most of the wearing period. Thankfully, I only have a couple fragrances that I'm not fond of and the rest I at least enjoy wearing. Conversely, MY top three are, as my wife puts it, not her favorites. Meaning, she's ok with them, but doesn't really like them too much.

Discovery sets are awesome, some of them are so well presented (Goldfield and Banks!). But even if unavailable, there's plenty of decanters around to satisfy your curiosity. I just ordered a bunch of Liquides Imaginaires samples and those I figured I'd love left me indifferent and one I thought I would hate and got just to satisfy my curiosity has me completely in love, which is Buveur de Vent: beautiful leather, smoky and sliiightly animalic (horse saddle) but in the best possible way, not dirty, just very empowering and confident. It's good advice to go for what interests you but at times, you can get hit with a completely unexpected love at first sniff! :)

this was a seriously fun (and educational) video - now I want to go blind buy Labyrinth of Spices 🤣. In all seriousness tho, I appreciate the message and wisdom. I truly think we're on the precipice of a "New Age" of fragrance that's growing day by day, people will be much better prepared if they took a little bit of time to learn what you have to offer. I'm excited to see your brand grow with this "New Age" because fragrance should always be something to share and love - and the world needs a lot more of both.

What i think is really important is to wear the fragrance multiple times. In my experience, the nose cant grasp the full fragrance at the first impression. When you know what to expect, i think you then can really get the full dimensions of the fragrance.

So, I have reached an interesting place in my fragrance-experience journey. A few years ago, I was a designer-head thru-and-thru. My thought was that I was able to find good enough options among designers without paying niche prices. However, about a year and a half ago, I began to realize how redundant so many designer releases are. Even my own collection had many overlapping scents. Meanwhile, I was starting to get into a few niche houses. Then, last summer I began to sell some things off and I started ordering several samples, such that I could get full wearings. I've picked up about a dozen new fragrances based on the samples that I loved the most. The other day, I realized that nearly all the bottles I sold last year were designers, and of the new bottles I've bought, 10 are niche 2 designer. This shift has been natural, but it's based on what I love and what most expresses me.

I've always wished I could have the luxury of having sample packs within my reach in my part of the world! Worst of all, even having the pleasure of testing in stores becomes a nightmare sometimes! So personally, most of my purchases are either blind buys (can't help it!), accidental discoveries, purchase from resellers or friends or through careful informed decisions from the knowledge I get from you guys and elsewhere (yes, Fragrantica, Basenotes, Parfumo etc), and the experiences I gathered from my encounter with the notes that become my favorites. So, the point I'm trying to make is that not everyone has the luxury of sampling samples as easy and as civilized as it may seem! But I've always learned one or two things from your videos. Thank you for the suggestions and ideas.

I think another thing worth mentioning, when it comes to sampling fragrances, is the season/weather when you are sampling something. Testing a cool weather fragrance in July is not going to give you an accurate impression of the fragrance. An example for me was when I blind-bought (Don't do this at home, kids) Nishane B-612 in August. The weather was hot and sweaty. When I sprayed B-612 on, it was an instant dislike. Despite what some reviews were saying this is NOT a warm weather fragrance. I suspected this and put it away until October. Trying it again in the autumn, it was an instant LUV. When it comes to seasons it's not just about the temperatures either. The air smells different in different seasons. The way the fragrance melds with the air can make a huge difference. B-612 in the fall air is sublime. The same is with testing summer fragrances in winter. My skin eats summer fragrances in Jan/Feb. I can smell the fragrance (ie. Xerjoff Uden Overdose) for about 5 minutes, then it is completely gone. When I tried it again in the spring, it just came to life. Masceration helps too.

Had to laugh at this 'if you have a larger sample, something like this 5ml sample....and you still have some left after the first wearing'. IF we have some left after the first wearing? I must be doing something wrong, cause a 5ml sample (roughly 50 sprays) lasts me about 7-10 wearings, depending on the strength of the fragrance.
