For a lot of us breathing is a relatively automatic phenomenon and negates the need for paying any extra attention to it. However, yogis of India and other parts of the world found out that life is, only as long as breath is.
So in bringing breath under their control, or more properly, the pranic/life force energy, they were able to prolong life and also improve the quality of health, not just of the body, of also the mind and the senses. By manipulating and enhancing the way we breath, we ensure a greater supplier of oxygen, stability and power to the nerves and an increase in vitality - a certain power of magnetism is also developed along the way for a sincere practitioner.
Just like Krishna the Indian god played the flute producing sounds that created bliss within the hearts and minds of the gopis (cowherd women/symbolically representing practitioners of yoga), the practitioner similarly plays with his breath producing melodious and harmonic tunes within the nerves and nerve currents - this in turn affects the various vital systems in our body.

*corrections: The throat chkara is related to Akash or aether/ether while the heart chakra is associated with Vayu/air. However, both form a prominent aspect of yogic breathing as consciousness of breath in the form of vayu/air tranforms and elevates towards the activation of the throat chakra of ether/akasha.
