Chris, this is your one of your very finest videos! Very well planned out and researched indeed! I personally would ask you to shoot some of the NSA 93gr, 110gr, 125gr, & 142gr slugs and show us the results on your new FX Chronograph. Very few guys can afford one of those new chronographs, but we would love to see the results you get with it because it is so precise. It would also be interesting to see what results you get with some 81gr Predator Polymags! I bet on small game they would be screamers! :) Thanks for all the time and energy it took for you to make this video for us! All the best, Chuck

Good video for people that don't understand such things. Knowing the pressure drop off point regardless if powder or air is a key to barrel length.👍👍

Yup the difference is with air the projectile build pressure the longer the valve is open all the way to the muzzle. With firearms that pressure is immediately produced.
@williamh6547

@@UpNorthAirGunner this is very true, the point I cannot stress enough is being able to know exactly at what point the pressure drops off, yes powder is instant, but the force travelswith force a certain length before it starts loosing power, the same with airflow, knowing this power loss point is crucial, then the twist rate comes into play, and the rifling point of start and stop is also critical for long ranging. Anyway I'm sure you get it. Have a great day. And good luck with your adventures 😎😎

Great video on air gun dynamic's. FX is a nice air rifle their is a following but their is a very large group of people that cannot afford the FX. This where for them the AEA came in, at first they were affordable and there 30 cal out of the box produced 160 FPE with a Neilson 61.5 grn. and the 45 cal produces 400+ FPE and with the new power valve pushed it to 600 FPE. Both are the AEA Challenger air rifles and the 30 cal hsa AEA regulator installed with 24 shot per fill and 5 shot -3/4" MOA at 50 yards. The 45 cal is unregulated, using Hunter Supplied 360 grain slugs, 4,300 PSI will give you 5 usable deer hunting shots starting at 600 FPE down to 400 FPE. Both rifles total cost is less the one FX air rifle.

I wish we had more airgun/PCP content creators that showed more than just their major or only sponsors. Snow Peak has made a few of the PCPs I own as well as others but NOBODY really shows them. No…they are NOT FX but ARE very good and often enough more than good enough for what most shooters need. I wish we could get more content about guns like this and less of the boutique brands that honestly most can’t afford especially with Bidenomics being the fantasy that is really is. I love your thought processes. I too share your desire to get the most out of my air guns. I recently watched a video from Garand Thumb, reviewing an 8.6 blackout using a subsonic round. I’m obviously not as well versed or as astute in my understanding, but still I think there is another twist to this equation. And I mean twist literally. If my memory serves me, the barrel had a 1/2 or 1/3 twist rate. No that’s not a typo. And the really insane thing was not just the accuracy (several hundred yards before any spin drift) but most surprisingly the penetration. I think the bullet was 263 grain hollow point plowed through 3 ballistic gel blocks and kept going seemingly unchecked and this is still subsonic mind you. I wonder how an air rifle would perform with such an extreme spin rate. Either way the video is titled “The quietest and most satisfying round we have ever shot”, and is well worth watching. That’s not to take away from your video, which I thoroughly enjoyed watching and found compelling. Therefore I am liking, subscribing and sharing… Keep up the great work.
@kovona
Ай бұрын
The idea behind the Blackout series of cartridges is a round that fires rifle-style bullets out of relatively short barrels. The longer a bullet is relative to its diameter, the more spin you need to stabilize it. So all things being similar, a long-ish rifle bullet projectile needs more spin to stabilize than say a short stubby pistol bullet projectile. Since Blackout chambered guns are intended to use short barrels with long rifle-style projectiles, they need a very fast twist rate in order to achieve the required rate of spin over a shorter distance (barrel length). Generally, you match the rifling twist rate to the ballistics of your projectile. Excessively over-spinning the bullet doesn't do much for accuracy and you just end up wasting energy or prematurely wearing down the barrel to create that spin.

I have! The benefit is you can run at a lower reg pressure to hit your target velocity, but the shorter barrel length does benefit in an overall stiffer barrel system. Right now I’m running a 600mm because of that second point. The over the barrel plenum does help stiffen up the entire platform.

Hmmmm.... Wish you'd covered more on why you picked 175 BAR / +-2500 PSI to set your regulator at. I got why the mass of the air behind the slug counts (the weight of the gas created by burning gunpowder actually counts in firearms if your reloading and pushing the edge of the envelope too). It would be great to see a graph for FPS with the same barrel and slug but changing pressure to see what was most efficient and then because it's most likely different, optimum for velocity. On most of my hunting airguns I aim for just below transonic (950 ish) with any weight slug and set the pressure to achieve that. That also means that in the comparatively short range of airguns the trajectory is (roughly) consistent ftom gun to gun. I know your saying kerp it under 50 yards but I usually sight in for 85 yard zero (at the 950 FPS with my usual choice of 150 gr. in. 357) which gives aprox 3" high @ 50 yards and aprox 3" low at 100. I can switch from my Taurus to my Texan to my WAR to my Hatsan and know they all have the same trajectory for me to remember (all are. 357, we're talking apples to apples here). Note that even though I'm prepared for up to 100 yards, I'm in agreement with you that real world hunting should be around 50ish yards. Like you have, I've shot out to 300 or even 400 yards just to accomplish it but I would NEVER hunt at those ranges. I have a 45 Texas with a valve and springs set up by Doug Noble to shoot at 4000 PSI which would deliver the necessary FPE and penetrantion out a couple hundred yards (with a 327 gr BTHP) but I'm not going to push my limits, I've stayed within right around 100 /120 yards and been happy to do so
@UpNorthAirGunner
Жыл бұрын
I picked 170 bar because with the stock spring I have in this thing that is where velocity stopped climbing. I’ve got a slightly heavier hammer and slightly heavier spring here to install to get it up to 200 bar. Like I mentioned though in the video, my goal is to shoot off the onboard bottles that I can fill to 300 bar. Ideally I’d like to get those 165 grain up around 900 FPS for a bit flatter trajectory out to 100 yards.
@bobjoatmon1993
Жыл бұрын
@@UpNorthAirGunner OK, I get you now or you could drop down to 150 gr slugs and your velocity would go up but your FPE shouldn't drop that much. I've found I get good penetration with the 150 gr (actually 152's). I didn't care for the 130 gr stuff though for hogs or deer.

@@bobjoatmon1993 Ya I tried the NSA 178s and they dropped into the 780s. I think 150-155 is the perfect weight for this rig. Ideally I’d like to be up around 900 FPS for a flatter trajectory. But in all actually slow and heavy is fine within 50 yards. Maximum FPE and penetration.

now i like this video , and you understand what the 30 inch barrel on my .357 aea big bore does, say how much is an 800mm version of the dynamic? i was looking at them on pyramid air and could only find the 700mm version. that big bore is the only aea i dont have regulated , hell the only airgun besides my element max that is not regulated and i choose to not do that with the element max it just works good with a 500cc tank and at 3800psi like a regulated airgun . really it works better than with a reg on it . but yes the length is where the energy is you just have to hold still after the trigger pull till that projectile gets out of the barrel. and omg would it not be cool to have a gerondoni. i am working on a tube to put roundball into and mount it to the rail in two places and put a spring around it so when you press the spring it releases a round ball into the breach of the element max like the gerondoni did. and i have not completed it quite yet, the tube is a piece of my blind cane from an old one and it is being j b welded to the sling mounts for my pick rail. giggles at a slight angle so the projectiles just roll down and onto the breach tray , now if i can make the knob touch the spring as i open the breach it should drop a roundball in. course i can put a 500 grain brass solid into that breach , but a quick rb cannot hurt, it shoots them at over 300fpe the roundball. it is also a 51 caliber like my max. also i been shooting .502 and .500 out of my .510 and not losing velocity, it rides the rifleing and spins by the air in the rifleing instead of engageing that rifleing. no rifleing grooves in the projectiles when they are retrieved . course i dont shoot pellets only slugs here. anyway nice barrel. what liner do you use, we dont deal with liners in aea guns. and my avenger , is well an avenger giggles. i am giving it to my mom soon after i make sure the .25 cal bullpup is a tank for her. reg set at 2680 and hammer at 4.5 turns out from zero. it just clicks, using the monocore baffles off ebay drilled out to .495 and slid onto the barrel and a bit of rubber and then the buckrail avenger/origin suppresser pressed onto that rubber and tightened up. and it just clicks and you hear the impact downrange. i really like those monocore baffles you just drill them to the barrel thickness and slide them on and put the shroud over that. yeah i usually buy an aluminum tube thin wall off ebay and cut it to exact length for a shroud. and tighten it like a tension barrel with an end cap on the threaded barrel end. works alot like an fx shroud does huh? Chris, Another great video. Liked and subscribed. What are the bottles volumes as well as the plenum? Did you top off the cylinders fill to 300 Bar? What was the shot count to where the cylinders dropped to the regulator pressure of 170 Bar, or 175 Bar, and what were the total cumulative sum of the foot pound energy (fpe) values? With what I gathered from the video, I guesstimated that 3.512 fpe is needed per grain of lead (Pb) mass, and thus reverse engineering, a regulator pressure can be approximated to achieve your results with different mass projectiles at the muzzle. Warning! math follows: 68 gr x 3.512 = 238.816 psi at the base of the 35 caliber projectile. 1 square inch / ((pi/4)) x 0.35 x 0.35 = 10.3937922 Now, 238.816 psi / [pi/4 x 0.35 x 0.35 x 14.504 = 171.1392635 Bar at the regulator I’m sorry to say that you were off by one (1) Bar pressure. I suggest you use a high quality digital output regulator pressure gauge. They cost around $100. With the 31 shots mentioned, the efficiency is a little low at 29.444% going to kinetic energy to the projectile, or 2.2918 fpe / grain of air 300 - 170 = 130 Bar available for 31 shots, if the 31st shot reached cylinder to regulator pressure, or approximately 4.2 Bar pressure per shot (60.8 psi). What does this all mean? That if your efficiency is less than caliber 0.35 inch, 35% then you are trading off efficiency for power, and that may be your intention, but if not then you can tone down the air usage amount and thus increase your efficiency, shot count, accuracy and stability, but if you rather have the extra fpe for the hunt because I do not think you will be hunting for 31 animals and your willing to lose around five shots off the count and a little bigger group by several thousandths of an inch then so be it, but the key is to know what you and your gun are doing and thanks to your video I have a better grasp on my air gun design. Stay safe and shoot straight Numbers do not lie, but you can lie with numbers, and the laws of physics are not just really good ideas. FJB Out!

I love the version without a front bottle . Now make one that I can kill a Moose with . I have been avoiding FX for a long long time because they cost WAY more than they are worth ! However they make this thing in a 50 cal with enough power to kill whitetails easy I may change my mind.

A combination of, say, 3 to 5 percent tin in lead when casting slugs will give penetration and maybe expansion too. What do yall think?
@UpNorthAirGunner
8 ай бұрын
Controlling expansion could help a bit but the bigger issue is the horrible sectional density of only 68 grains. There’s no fixing that other than running a different design when penetration is critical.
@derrickmitchell39dm
8 ай бұрын
@UpNorthAirGunner What are the other factors that determine projectile penetration besides sectional density?
@UpNorthAirGunner
8 ай бұрын
@@derrickmitchell39dm Overall FPE and not only the overall expansion but how it expands - either immediate or delayed. That can be controlled through both HP design and lead hardness. FPE is the biggest factor though.
@derrickmitchell39dm
8 ай бұрын
@UpNorthAirGunner For a purely hunting projectile, the sectional density needed to penetrate bone, heart, and lungs, the airgun projectile would have to look like that of what hunting rifles use. Not exactly the same but almost similar. Example: somewhat pointed, harder lead, 84 grain hunting airgun projectile, preferable 970 to 1000+ FPS 60 to say 75 yard max effective range. Highest possible BC of course.
@UpNorthAirGunner
8 ай бұрын
@@derrickmitchell39dm BC doesn’t matter all that much for big game hunting with Airguns. Especially this .35 FX. The FPE at the muzzle is marginal at best even at 50 yards. So long range considerations are a moot point. A solid to get through both lungs would be preferable like a 80-90 gr.

Firsr a big thank you for this def. interesting. I learned something (i hope) from this video but my question is; is .35 really a big bore because for all I know is that big bore counts from .44/.45 and up. Once I calculated a .35 as as well but many articles told that a .357 would not cut the deal or how you wanna see it got How is that ?
@UpNorthAirGunner
11 ай бұрын
In airguns .357 and higher are considered “big bore”. I’ve never really liked the phrase because it’s used interchangeably with an airgun used for larger game hunting. .357 in my opinion is best for medium to smaller big game animals. Smaller Deer down to Racoons.
