A little bit longer than 20 years ago, I lost my wife to cancer. My children lost their mother. It took two years, and in the end she was a shadow of her normal self, to the point that at the end she couldn't recognize us. Two decades later, and it still tears out my soul when I am reminded of her. I weep every time I hear this song. Including this time. As a Child who lost his Father at 14 to cancer I can only say I recognise the pain, frustration, depression, anger and hurt that happened during that time to my immature mind. But I also learnt from my parents that showed me the strength, resiliance, love, humour and the precious lesson to enjoy the moment then at that time and to hold onto it for the bad times. My humour is very dark,I always look for the worst thing that could happen when things do go bad, but my Mother and Father taught me and equipped me with the tools to survive just as you both did for your children. @mvellis3863
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Maxwell did a cover. And Kate has incredible range in her voice (4 octaves) - in Wuthering Heights she was singing in her upper register because her character in the song was a ghost (many of Kate's songs are character-driven stories and she becomes the character when she is singing). Kate's song "This Woman's Work" came about when movie director John Hughes called Kate and asked her if she would write a song for his movie "She's Having A Baby" with Kevin Bacon. He wanted a special song to go with the scene in the movie where Kevin Bacon's wife was in the delivery room and there was a medical emergency and the lives of his wife and baby were in danger. During the scene Bacon is helpless to do anything but he starts remembering things from the past about their relationship. Kate accepted and wrote the song, recorded it, and produced it in a very short amount of time. Director Hughes had sent her a clip of the scene and Kate played it in the studio while she was composing the song. After the movie came out, Kate did this music video when she released the song as a single. Kate directed the video herself and changed the story slightly in that the man's wife has some kind of medical emergency and is in the ER (there is no indication of pregnancy) and the husband is panicking and thinking about all the things he should have said and done for her

Kate Bush is one of my all-time favorite artists. She is a great writer, composer, performer and producer. She has influenced many artists that came after her. She tackles unique subjects and often takes a lot of musical risks, so it's easy to get a song that may not be quite accessible for the casual listener (like Wuthering Heights - which I love but would not use as an entry point these days for her work but it is historically significant). I would recommend 'Don't Give Up' with Peter Gabriel, 'Running Up That Hill' which was her biggest US hit, 'The Sensual World', 'Moments of Pleasure', or 'Experiment IV'. My favorite is side B of 'Hounds of Love' album called the Ninth Wave, but it's one that needs to be listened to straight through as it's one complete story (which I suggest learning the story before going in so it makes more sense). The only song from that that can really stand alone is 'Jig of Life' which I love. I spent hours as a teen with the headphones on getting lost in the musical worlds she created and/or analyzing her incredible lyrics.

Isn't she spectacular? This is one of her most mainstream-sounding compositions, and so it's one of her easiest-to-appreciate songs. Running Up That Hill is an obvious place to start with Kate, with a very accessible 1980s dance-pop sound and pretty straightforward metaphorical lyrics, and Breathing is a gorgeous song, as well, although it gets a bit avant garde toward the end. Cloudbusting is a lively, lovely sounding song with esoteric subject matter that requires some investigation. A lot of her great songs, while nothing like Wuthering Heights, are as 'weird' as Wuthering Heights and are best accessed by approaching her music as fine art rather than as mainstream pop. Songs like Suspended in Gaffa and Sat in Your Lap aren't the 'prettiest' songs, but they sure are interesting in a good way. And believe it or not, the oddness of Wuthering Heights can grow on you and can feel not at all off putting once you get inside the spirit of the song. It may help to realize that that song is sung from the vantage point of a ghost who has tormented her still-alive lover, and so Kate's peculiar singing is meant to suggest the voice of a haunted, tortured spirit who has a kind of sadistic love for the man she's trying to connect with. I'm a little hesitant to mention her here because so many people compare her with Kate Bush, but Tori Amos does have a voice that's understandably compared often with Kate's. They have a lot of similarities, although I think most of the similarities are superficial and the content of their music actually could hardly be more different. Tori is my favorite musician overall with Kate being a close second. If you haven't listened to Tori Amos, then I wish you would, and if you're interested particularly in vocal dynamics, then I'd suggest starting with Caught a Lite Sneeze, Hey Jupiter, Silent All These Years, Crucify and the song Little Earthquakes. (A live performance of 'Winter' from 1992 is very popular among KZitem reviewers, as well.) Both artists are an acquired taste to be sure, but their music is just spectacularly rewarding once your ears and mind adapt to them. Both are astonishingly good writers and inventive musicians as well as fascinating vocalists. I think of Kate as a more technically innovative musician and sort of as a musical short-story fiction author, whereas Tori is a nearly incomparable pianist and poet/essayist. Since both play keyboards and sing in distinctively high voices, and even have a vaguely similar appearance, they are very often compared, with a lot of Kate fans believing Tori imitates Kate, but their interests and writing styles are extremely different in most cases and totally rewarding.

The thing about Kate Bush is she is the whole package musically. She writes the music lyrics and choreographs the dance. Produces everything herself her way. She wrote wuthering heights as a young teenager based on a classic story about a haunting basically. Hence the mad vocals. If you can watch documentaries about her music where many greats of the music world explain how she has influenced their careers it explains all the recommendations to react to her.

Wuthering Heights was a song about the book “Wuthering Heights” A 100% LITERARY CLASSIC. Please read this book. Then, go back and listen to her remastered updated re-recording of Wuthering Heights. You listened to the first recording. The newer version is so much better. Also, the lyrics are sung from the point of view of the character Catherine to Heathcliff from the book Wuthering Heights. Catherine is a ghost spirit singing to Heathcliff her first and only true love. It’s a beautiful story. I hope you read this. Also, you need to delve deeper into Kate Bush’s catalog. She’s a brilliant singer songwriter.

Some of the finest artists are not instantly approachable. It took me a while to understand Kate Bush and had the same reaction to Wuthering Heights.. it was a performance on Saturday Night Live (Them Heavy People) that clicked the light. She has the integrity to be who SHE is and do what she wants. I agree with the comment below - I called my first book of poetry Running Up That Hill and had the, um, nerve to print the lyrics to the song on the first page (crediting her of course). The song is about communication. Dont Give Up yes you will connect with!

I'm not sure why people haven't suggested her songs that were actually sort of popular. The ones you've listened to are songs her fans might like. "Wuthering Heights" was her most successful song commercially, her biggest hit. She topped the charts during 4 weeks in UK, and it was number one in many countries too. All this at the age of 19 and being totally unknown at the time as it was her first single. But people from USA ignored that incredible song.

@@connorwatson6766 Probably because you're from the US. In Europe and many other countries, "Wuthering Heights" was the song which made KB instantly famous, 7 years before the ones you mentioned. @@connorwatson6766 That's not really relevant. No matter where you're from. Kate Bush really insisted on her record label (EMI) that "Wuthering Heights" should be THE song to be introduced to the public because it was different from anything else and she thought that song would be the best way to impress people. She was right. Too bad for the US market & public that didn't get it right from the start, but we did and I'm glad. "Wuthering Heights", for me and many people, is the best way possible to get introduced to KB's unique world of poetry, emotion and, yes, sometimes weirdness.
