Thorfinn didn't just remake himself because he was unhappy with the person he used to be, he was literally forced to because Askeladd's death left him empty with no life purpose or reason for living. You shouldn't compare yourself to Thorfinn, as his story and development is as revolutionary as it gets, bred only from a truly sorrowful & traumatic life. Olmar is actually a far more relatable character who discovers who he is, who he actually wants to be & his raw understanding of courage and honor. I found Olmar's story to almost be more realistic & ordinary but also nearly as compelling as Thorfinn's own journey of self-discovery as Olmar learns simply by watching Thorfinn's bold actions and the suffering that war has on the people around him.

I'm writing a visual novel that's kinda going in reverse of your take on season 2. It's supposed to show how one who brushes off their past will easily be crushed by it, even someone with power and support and love. The protag is a teen who has experienced a comically large amount of trauma, but after many years of torture and a few of retribution, he kinda swept it under the rug, finding peace, money, riches, and a view of how the types of people he stayed far away from and automatically hated weren't all that bad. That is until a turning point when lose ends break the chain, and the character gets dragged back into that hole of darkness. The ending also has a huge purpose as a moral moving forward for the audience and the protagionst.

I think the change in thorfinn, from being raised as "The son of Askeladd" back to being "The son of Thors" is what makes this season great. I think the main reason it got the hate that it did was because the first season attracted the shounen audience, thinking this was a shounen series, when in all actuality its a seinen. Vinland saga s2 is so good because it flips your perspective on s1 so much, and it really drives home it's message by first idolizing the classic viking rampage before forcing you to stare at the devestation that creates. Thorfinns new ideology is so interesting because an entire season was dedicating to setting up his past. Thors had the same ideology, but compared to Thorfinn you kinda brush him off in the first episode as being naive in not killing when threatened, it's when Thorfinns realizes he was right that you do aswell. And having any show flip your perspective in that way is worth gold. I also honestly don't know why people find s2 boring. When I first watched Vinland Saga Season 1, I felt very conflicted. As much as I loved the historical setting and Askeladd and the fights and the storytelling in general, I felt like the main character was very unlikeable because he was so one-note. I loved the ending of Season 1 but I still felt conflicted. However, when I finally gave Season 2 a chance everything changed. I found myself ADORING Thorfinn as a character and how much he had changed, and I realized that his changed character only works as a result of him being so one-note in the first Season. I love Season 1 but I ADORE Season 2 and I love how it was willing to take such a big risk. And when Thorfinn said, “I have no enemies,” that hit me so hard. It made me rethink the very concept of having “enemies” and it made me feel like having no enemies, holding no grudges, was the ultimate freedom. I encourage everyone reading this to read the manga once you’ve caught up with Season 2, it just keeps getting better and better!

Well I love Vinland Saga, but found getting into Vagabond extremely difficult as it was so... Booooring... And confusing? Like I really had trouble understanding why anything was happening and I guess a big part why people like it is that "violence just happens" like it does IRL, but... Maane, for me it's all over the place. Maybe the Anime won't be so confusing for me. And I do have to say that I find medieval Japan very boring, hence why Vagabond's novelty setting did not engross me.

Some may think that Vinland Saga’s theme is trite and that they’ve seen it before but the execution is exceptional. I don’t know how to properly phrase this, but it’s the best possible ‘version’ of the theme. It doesn’t miss in its message. If you enjoy character-driven stories that are about death and destruction, despair and regret, sadness and rebirth, I can’t recommend Vinland Saga enough.
@thehumanity0
Жыл бұрын
It's a theme that we've seen before, but the way it's portrayed through Viking culture, a race of people who revere violence and war and how slavery is just something that can happen to you on one unlucky day when one Jarldom raids another is definitely a unique outlook on the theme. And then there's a character like Thorfinn who just completely rejects Viking traditions and their lifestyle, not out of converting to Christianity or finding God but because of a secular sense of morality and empathy towards the people he himself had victimized in his early life. The whole concept works beautifully and is somehow something new and compelling.

Just finished Vinland season 2. I actually can’t believe the retards saying it’s bad. It is absolutely amazing. I waited for all of the episodes to come out so I could binge them. If you watch season 1 and then season 2 right after it is the most airtight narrative I’ve ever witnessed. This is one of the most impressive anime I’ve ever seen. I can feel that people aren’t even taking in the deep message this show flawlessly presents. All they care about is “Omg when is thorfinn gonna get angry and look badass again, this season is boring! dropped!” At this point in the story,Thorfinn grows up. He’s outgrown his animosity towards the world. This is a classic case of audience immaturity. Classic weebs doing what they do best. Sitting on their ass living their lives through a character, and when that character actually matures they cannot no longer emulate them due to the maturity they lack themselves.

The tonal shift in the manga is pretty apparent in around the times when the two seasons split as well, you can tell that early on in the story, Makoto Yukimura stuck to a lot of tropes of the genre he was writing for, even though it didn't really seem like his style. Once he applied his own style and did away with the things that he might've felt like he "needed" to have in the story, his voice really came through, and the identity of the story became something totally different and unique. It's one of my favorite mangas of all time. Very well done

in his interview with Gigguk, he mentions how many and how much characters are mad FOR Thorfinn. and he specially highlights Askellad. So after watching this video, i decided to give vinland saga a shot. Season 1 plot about revenge wasn’t necessarily the first time ive seen about it. But throughout season 1, we saw depth behind the characters were going through with the raids and the politics. For season 2, it did a full 180. From some kid who is filled with anger and rage to kill the man he’s been essentially living with and killing for to then become someone who lost themselves as a person who wants redemption from his sins and becomes a pacifist, it was one of the most emotional journies i have witnessed. I binged season 2 in about 2 days and i cried in total of 10 times. Thorfinn is different compared to the other characters we have seen in naruto, one piece, bleach, dbz, AOT, etc. The anime is definitely up there to be one of the best written stories. I believe this is a great recommendation for people who love philosophical animes where it requires critical thinking and compassion. Thank you charlie for speaking about this anime ❤

I literally could not agree more. One of the most well written seasons I’ve ever seen from an anime with the absolute best character development I’ve ever seen in any form of media and the most dramatic 180 I’ve ever seen from one season to the next. The fact season 1 and 2 very literally fall into different genres and yet their transition is so seamless and well paced and both seasons are incredible stories truly speaks to the authors skill.
@UFOinDisguise

I think it's sad that in our fast phased media, people tend to overlook character writing and the philosophical messages a show could spit out and just focus on the brawls and "epic moments", I had a friend who stated "I just don't wanna think when watching a show" and as irritating to me as it sounds, I think a lot of people feel the same way in our current fast phased media, a lot of people just spend their day mindlessly scrolling on ticktock or youtube shorts and forgetting about it later, not really getting anything from it. It's sad, I sound like a boomer but these days, people forget that a show can be more than just a commodity we consume and forget. Sometimes, it can inspire, motivate someone, and learn lessons from it, and truly experience the greatness and the art of film and story telling.

*YES, season 2 was slow but I loved every second.* the idea of someone taking your fathers life isn't something anyone wants to think about and I'd hope not to many would relate. Watching the show gave me closure and I'd love to know more about the creators and what really inspired them to make this, they're part of the reason my mental state isn't at an all time low. growing up, my dad always talked about never hurting anyone and just being a kind person as you go through life. I'm glad my dad is still around but their was a time in my life when I wasn't sure if he was going to live and that was around the same time that the first season of Vinland came out. so at first I needed to feel angry at something and that's EXACTLY what the first season did, the second season came around just in time for me to start letting go of others actions and how they affect my family. having the main character searching for peace is the best possible outcome they could've chosen, it feels so real and even though his goal is implausible by himself, every decent person only wants that. a long, fruitful, peaceful, life. I gotta look up the creators after this dude you just reminded me how much I appreciate the writers dude. this paragraph doesn't even remotely give enough definition as to how much it actually impacted me. more than I deserve, that's for sure.
