I wonder if they added that after having to update the game eng. They said they worked on this game so long the comp they used for the game eng went under years ago so they had to pretty much take over that eng and build on it.

The company didn't go under lol, it's Autodesk. It's still alive and well (unfortunately).

In general details like that missing has not been due lack of realism, but lack of general CPU/GPU resources. Things like permanents footprints, bullets holes, bodies etc. take up memory, so most games usually wipe them out after a bc it's rarely a detail most players want compared to e.g. smoother gameplay and lesser minimum requirements because reality is that most people do not have high end gaming rigs with lots of memory and top CPU/GPUs. Also usually players move away from the areas they've explored, so in most games you rarely even encounter your old "tracks" so having such details wiped out is usually no big loss. Some games like RDR2 have tracks in snow, Killing Floor 2 has gore and blood that stays and it's always nice to see that kind of details. These kinds of details are probably (hopefully) more common in future games. What I would like to see more is destroyable environments, structures you can destroy partially, e.g. you could have actual bullet holes that you can see through etc. There have been few games that have some features like that, but naturally there are certain things to consider like not been able to stop the progress due game area became unplayable. E.g. a game like Silent Storm had quite nicely destroyable environment and ragdoll effects and similar fun stuff, problem was that in some situations, e.g. a certain bunker mission failed because enemy had machine gun placements shooting such that they destroyed only ladders away from the area, which I only noticed after I had cleared the mission and was ready to leave the area. So if you had e.g. ability to dig a holes in the ground there should be also have ways to get out of those holes somehow and not e.g. destroy mission critical areas totally. In single player one griefs only themselves, in multiplayer they affect every player in the team.

So yea. . Sandstorms are fun! You can't even see the lovely footprints you leave behind.
