Separating out the specific parts and tools for each of the seven step assembly process steps was brilliant on the part of the manufacturer. For the price, I am impressed at how sturdy this kzitem.infoUgkxvObaTzoHoHQLL4lHbJQmExHqsrZQm-f7 unit is and it does go together easily. Well, I was puzzled at first at Step 5 and maybe the instructions should mention that rail #62 needs to be tilted upwards a little to get the rail to fit into the main part #44. I like it that the rower can be stored vertically in a really small amount of space, but be forewarned that this rower is top heavy and for safety you'll need at least two bungee cords to keep the unit upright, attaching them to something; in my case to a third garage door. I have had this unit only a short time, and I will post an update once I've had it for a year. As for working your legs, I have to admit that I'm mainly rowing for upper body strength and I use other forms of exercise for leg strength (like walking fast, biking, or using a trampoline. But if you pull as far forward as possible, then you can give preference to your legs for the first 4 feet or so of travel. I also admit to not taking the two electronic connectors apart at Step 7. I simply inserted the two batteries while the other parts remained connected. By the way, there is plenty of resistance here, even in the lowest resistance settings. Kudos to Sunny Health & Fitness !

After a lot of research, this specific rower is the one I decided I'm going to get (hoping to get a better deal on Black Friday), so I was thrilled to find that you agree! I wasn't even thinking of the full stroke aspect (but good to know!), rather I liked the tablet/phone holder it has so I can follow along with your/other workout videos, as well as just watching Netflix, etc, while working out lol. I also liked the larger monitor it has that displays more info simultaneously than similar-priced single-metric ones, and the bottle holder as well. @@philindeblanc Yes, I did. I've been using it the last 2 months and love it. I'd say the resistance, even with water filled almost to max, isn't as much as you'd get with a magnetic or other type of rower, but this one still gives both my wife & I a nice workout. I'll also point out that the handlebars can bruise your palms a little if using for an extended period of time, so I suggest using workout gloves with it, which is what I do. I put it together last night and did a few sessions in on it with the water level at about 70%. It rows smoothly, and it quite. It's sturdy, and solid. No creeks, wobbles. Its Just a beast and we'll made. The display is pretty nice in the sense that it gives you all the data one needs to progress. The foot pads are not super close to one another, and my feet stay planted. I'm glad I came across this video, and always for his opinions and critiques. As someone who used to row in an eight, and subsequently on Concept 2s, I recently acquired a magnetic rowing machine, to save both space and money. It is solidly built, but as you note, it does not allow the full forward reach - you have to bend your arms. However, while it does not allow a proper rowing motion, it is still good purely for exercise, and I have got used to bending my arms. Given that the first part of any stroke is with the legs, it does not really matter that much. The other problem with a magnetic rowing machine is that they do not offer that much resistance either. Basically, if you are serious about rowing, you will have a Concept 2 at home or use it in the gym, or even a water rower, but if you just want a compact machine for extra workouts that it easy to store and won't break the bank, the magnetic machines should be fine. As long as you aren't too tall.

It has a nice design and the monitor has the essential functionality. It does have the mechanism described in the video to get the full range of motion and the seat it’s quite comfortable. One important thing to mention is that the first one I had was defective. Hey, I got this one in September! You forgot to mention it can fold up. I'm mostly happy with it as a home rower, although I wish the monitor was backlit. The metric tracking is definitely not comparable to a Concept2. I went from using a C2 at the gym to this Sunny Phantom and my split time nearly doubled for roughly the same effort. At least I can track from workout to workout. Assembly was easy enough with 2 people but I wish it would have come in 2 boxes. It was a bitch to get the huge box up the stairs to the apartment (I dropped it on my knee and had a huge bruise for 2 weeks). The part that goes around my heels is very hard and uncomfortable if only wearing socks or in bare feet and the velcro on the straps runs out so I can't get them tight enough on the front but wearing shoes solves both problems. The heel bit also frequently slips off and smacks against the metal behind it, making an annoying noise. I put some thin foam as cushioning between them so it doesn't make noise. Overall I'd say it's a good budget rower.

How loud is this rower and what type of material is the cord (attached to the handle) made of?
@chromedruidess2546
3 жыл бұрын
@@my2cents581 I'm not sure of an objective way to explain the noise but I'm in an old apartment building where I can hear my downstairs neighbour coughing through the floor. But, he can't hear when I'm rowing (I asked). However, if you or anyone else plans to watch a show or a movie in the same room while someone rows, it's better to wear headphones or else the TV needs to be cranked way up. It gets quieter if you row faster and a lot of sloshing will let you know if you mess up your stroke timing. The vinyl rollers for the seat also make a faint zipping sound as they roll back and forth along the metal rail but it's not too noticeable, especially if you're focused on your workout or just wearing headphones. The strap for the handle is a nylon strap, sort of like seat belt material but 1 inch wide.

Nice to see your take on what's out there. I started shopping as an absolute neophyte, could see what was wrong with the cable/strap feed directly above the footplates, wasn't 100% sure that pivoting footplates were BAD - but none of the higher-priced models had 'em, which I took as a sign. The Concept2 was out (space issues plus noise), so magnetic or water. I read some things about magnetic rowers having 'dead' spots and all of them not increasing resistance as you pulled harder. So water. I was looking at waterrower, but they had a months-long backlog. I looked at this exact model, as well as the Chinese waterrower knock-offs. Ended up spending another $400 or so for a FirstDegreeFitness water rower, which had adjustable water/resistance levels. At the time I had an illusion that my wife might also use it - so that was the pick. I wondered about longevity/reliability, and the thing that reassured me about FBF was that they had commercial (as in for health clubs) models that appeared to use the exact same water resistance mechanism. I figured that if those would stand up to that kind of usage, the residential one I got would stand up to my usage. As a neophyte, I knew NOTHING about rower electronics, but I lucked out there. Nothing as fancy as the current Concept2 stuff, but all I need, including a built-in heart rate monitor receiver. There was a replacement handle with built-in heart rate monitor available - that I'm still considering. I was concerned about seat comfort on the cheaper models. If anybody's stuck with a cheaper model with an uncomfortable seat, check out rowingpad.com/ . I've used these in other watercraft and the thicker models can make a board comfortable. I still wonder how very terrible those waterrower knockoffs are(?) I'd be curious to see if you could make one fail.

Thank you for the review. If the Sunny Health was available I would have purchased. I ended up with a very similar rower, the Exterra 600W/Water Rower. Only downside, it does not come with a water-bottle or phone rest. Over all it’s a great machine for a beginner rower and it’s under $600. 🙆🏻♀️

Wondered if you have any thoughts about Joroto MR 60. Magnetic /air resistence. Bought it because my wife asked for it. Fixed foot plates and seems to have long rail and full reach. Monitor covers time,time/500M,srokes,total strokes,distance,watts,calories,RPM and pulse. wanted your opinion but i did already buy it. seems pretty solid. It does fold. I mostly do follow along workouts so far.Does have a phone/tablet holder. Love yourvideos. Just ordered Row your fat off book.

Well, yes, but what should also be said is that whether you're able to perform a full range of motion at the front-end or not on a Sunny-like machine depends a lot on your height/limbs' lenght. So, it's true, a larger piece of equipment with the handle positioned farther away from your body is definitely to be preferred, but only if you have a very long torso and arms - and no paunch getting in the way :). I'm about 6 feet tall, kind of average height/build, and having the handle closer to my foot plates doesn't really hinder my ability to get a good reach on the front end ;)

Hey Austin! I'm so glad you have so many videos on reviewing different rowers. I am an athlete but completely new to rowing. But I watched several of your videos and decided the Sunny Fitness Obsidian Surge was the best entry level rower for me. I guess two downsides I'll be looking at are 1. not that many stats on the screen and 2. the foot plates will move like the cheaper magnetic version. I am thinking about modifying my own foot plates with wood boards to save money. Any thoughts on that particular machine and any pros and cons? Thanks for all you do! I'll check out your videos for workout ideas 😁👍🏻

I went the cheap route twice with rowing machines and it was a mistake. If you want a rower to say you have one and hop on it once a month for your amusement then a cheap one is fine. If you are serious about getting a REAL workout 5 to 6 days per week buy a concept 2. There is a reason why you see most athletes using the C2--because it does the job and is a beast. Sure if you want someone on a tv screen yelling and trying to motivate you then the C2 is not for you, look at Hydrow or Peloton.

Thanks for the review. More of these should be reviewed. The star ratings are not always helpful and like you said they are not always reviewed by those who row. Not all of us can afford the Concept price tag and even used ones are still around $900. I recently bought the Obsidian 500 which underneath the one you recommended for the same “catch” issues with the other budget rowers. My only issue with the Obsidian is the movable foot plates. I am a handy dude so I have ordered the adjustable ones from Concept for less than $30 to mount. This will also solve the inseam issue as well. I am only 6’ tall but my inseam is about 35” so with a running shoe I run out of room on the bar. Thin soles of a racing flat are a bit better but once I can drop the heels all will be better. The monitor is pretty simple and provides all of the basic stats that you suggested are essential. I ordered a tablet holder on Amazon for about $15 that clamps to the frame so that I can follow along with your workouts. To me the tension with a full tank feels similar to about a setting of 3-5 on the Concept 2 at my gym. Again, more reviews of the budget rowers would helpful for those us who can’t buy the Concept 2.

Hi, I live in the UK and availability of everything is outright terrible - I'm also about 110 kg at the moment so I need the sturdier machines. Are you familiar with JTX FREEDOM AIR? If yes, what's your opinion? The footplates and handle are about half the distance with each other compared to a concept2 D (which has a lead time of 15 weeks here). The handle is also relatively high up. Does this sound like something that could work?

From my experience on my failed Sunny Fitness higher-end (for them) eliptical trainer and then studying Sunny Fitness reviews for many devices (cycles, treadmills, etc), the "weak link" is almost always the bearings. The Asian company uses cheap, imported bearings that heat up, fail, and cannot be replaced. The bearings make a grinding noise in short order (a couple dozen hours of use) that cannot be avoided with any amount of preventative oiling. If this is true of this water rower, the weakness would be in the wheel which the rowing belt turns upon entering the machine, and also the bearings for the water "fan". It is a shame because the rest of these Sunny Machines is decent, but to fail at the bearings is inexcusable (and as the reviews show, the company is "crickets" on any warranty, no help whatsoever). Admittedly, I have never owned this particular water rower, so this is just a general comment; but, if anyone buys this device and begins to hear noises from the bearings, try to return it immediately if possible...it only gets worse to point of unusable from grinding and not smooth travel. Thank you for your videos, Training Tall.

I bought this recently after watching this video. It's well made but the monitor is not great and please make a rule of not recommending products you have not used yourself (it's a matter of credibility) which few people have these days. THE RESISTANCE IN THIS MACHINE IS NOT ENOUGH even for a beginner. I have never rowed and can easily row for 30 mins on this. Otherwise, it's good quality and well made.
