@@thegoodlistenerslistenwell2646 Why would tiny bugs be important to me? I mean, raising bugs doesn't give me the same happiness as raising humans, because my terminal goal doesn't involve any bugs, rather it needs people. An AI will be very predictable, you give it something to do, aka. a terminal goal, and it will pursue it relentlessly. For example: You make a robot to collect stamps, and it becomes very intelligent, and it finds way to escape your control. You may throw Marx at it, but it will not seize the means of production to decentralise wealth, and start a worker revolution, as such actions are a waste of resources from the perspective of the ASI, it will rather seize the means of production to make more stamps, as it cares about making stamps, but not about equality, as equality is not requred to reach it's terminal goal. It may give you emotional comfort to deny the harsh reality, but then don't do anyithing even slighly in relation to reality. Yeah, that's stupid.

@@jasonward9336 Well most things can endanger human life. If your microwave malfunctions, it can kill you. If your car malfunctions, it can kill you. Most machines we use can kill us if they malfunction. Even medications and surgeries have a legitimate risk of death. I don't see how this would be any different. I know the idea of it is kind of scary, but it would literally be your own cells that were modified to do certain things. They aren't some artificial intelligence capable of making decisions and changing what they are programmed to do. These cells literally can't do anything else except what they are programmed for, because the, "programming," involves structuring the cell in a way that affects how it moves. It's like being worried that your heart cells will randomly decide to attack your body or something. They literally can't do that... There is still some concern obviously, since cells do malfunction and cause diseases like cancer, but I'm not sure that these, "robot," cells would have that risk. I just question whether you're basing you're fear on preconceived notions from sci fi movies and books, or from actual fact. In 1999 people thought the new millenia would bring some kind of tech apocalypse. When test tube babies started being born, people were convinced that they would be soulless monsters. So many new technologies have caused people to predict apocalypse level scenarios, and it never happens. Even books were once considered a dangerous new technology that could cause a person to descend into madness. We need to keep our imaginations in check and focus on real, fact based risks in order to make decisions about technological innovations. If we always listened to the people warning of doomsday scenarios when new technology was developed, we would be living in the dark ages.

It's probably because the past 50 years or so are either caught up with the focus on weapon technology that slowly transitioned into digital/social/computing technology. So since we now have a substantial degree of computation and simulation, it's only now that STEM experts are executing tests. I'm willing to bet some experts in the past have theorized and even patented/layed-out plans for these before but never had the technology to prove it.
@Lankpants
3 жыл бұрын
There's a couple of reasons I can think of. The first is the use of computer simulation. It would be hard to know how your creation's going to act. Most possible combinations probably just fall over and start twitching. And the work is so hard that it's unrealistic to trail-and-error your way through it. Using an evolutionary algorithm, something that's risen in prominence only recently helps here. The second is that someone had tried it, but failed due to the precision needed. Separating and moving cells around isn't easy at all. It's quite possible that there was a new method used by the researchers here that made this process more reliable.

Very interesting! As far as ethical implication, humans aren't really too good at that on a planetary, national, or even community scale. And when money gets involved ethics takes a lesser priority. Examples abound!

If it can be translated to "foreigner" translate it to that, because it makes less sense when used with "friend". So, "not one of our kind" bots. We didn't make it (thats "xeno") but it behaves the way we want it to (thats "bot").

Their still trying to re-annimate the dead? This time, 1 cell at a time. It's true each cell knows what to do to create the part of the body it was specially made to make. But now, there trying to change the individual cells job into their own idea of what the cell should be doing. The cell knows what it's job is. Whether they reconfigure the cells position or not, this will only create a glob of cells doing their job of building the specific organ they were created by the Creator to be a part of. Like you are going to brainwash the Creator to make the cells do something different than they were created to do? It will end in abject failure.
