We had a young boy accidentally kill his sister while his dumb ass police officer father had the glock in the glove compartment of the car while he stepped away for a bit. I know it's not the guns fault, but nice to have a safety backup. Oh, don't forget about FBI agents dancing and dropping their gun and shooting someone while retrieving it. Again, shit happens.

I worked in retail firearms for 8 yrs in a high volume store. I will be so bold as to say that if people are returning Glocks in disproportionate numbers that is entirely due to the sales staff, assuming the store has a reasonably wide selection of guns. We encouraged new buyers to handle a variety of guns, make sure the customer could comfortably take a full grip of the gun and operate controls w/o having to break their grip, answered questions, respectful challenged erroneous assumptions, and discussed advantages and disadvantages of the prospective purchase. If customers aren’t educated and allowed to handle the firearms prior to purchase then of course there will be a lot of returns. And not allowing trade in before 45 days speaks volumes about how a store does business.

Agreed! Glocks 3 built in safties make the gun safe while the brain keeps it so. Manual safties are unsafe and are nothing more than crutch that is not needed on striker fired guns. On SA guns like the 1911 a manual safety is a must. On a DA/SA guns I prefer a decocker though a Manual safety will work. In any case much more training is needed as there is much more to make their operation muscle memory. On a Glock if you pull the trigger it goes bang if you don't it won't. Always use a good holster and keep your booger hook off the bang switch and a Glock is 100% safe. And God forbid you ever need it but if needed it will go bang every time you pull the trigger. Imo a Glock has everything you need in a pistol and nothing you don't. All rules have an exception so add a good set of sights.

And it just didn't make sense to keep a handgun I couldn't nearly conceal, therefore it never left the house. I also at the same time (handgun-wise) had a Springfield XDs Mod 2 in 45 that fit my hand just a bit better, so first I tried that online gun auction site, but after thinking about the overall transaction uncertainty, I just took it to a pawn shop. Glocks do have an external safety. It's on the trigger. The problem really has nothing to do with Glock. The real problem is people want to go out and buy a firearm and not get any training. I've had a Glock for about 35 years. What I liked about it most was the safety was designed with one of the cardinal rules in gun handling. Never put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot. The Glock external safety is in the trigger. With proper training it is easier and more intuitive to take the shot faster than messing with sweeping an external safety. I'd offer that a Glock can be just as safe as a wheel gun if you train and practice properly.

Then you have an "original" G-17, because they first became available for purchase by civilians (non-LEOs) in 1986. They have the little Phoenix stamp, non-stainless serial number tab and the "automatic" reload feature due to the weak slide-stop lever spring, (which means it'll lock open on the last round fired fine, but the slide will slam and load the top round of the freshly loaded mag automatically without manipulation of of the slide or the slide lock). The "one" feature I never changed on my original 17........ : ) ps - it has fired more than 20K rnds, on it's 4th set of Meprolites and still works that way, not to mention it's jealous as heck that I now carry a 26 and a 19 in it's place most days.....

@@joshrandall3632- Slight difference w/ the original, ya do have to keep a thumb pressure "up" on the slide lock until the mag is "in" the well, lest the slide close before the mag's heading home, (slightest bump or shake and you'll set the slide off prematurely - not a good thing at the wrong time), but once she's headed up ya just release pressure and she's loaded automatically. That said your method works and the original actually trained my thumb to make all my Glocks (Gen 2s & 3s) reload exactly as you described, (as my thumb was always there) I just put slight pressure the opposite way with my other Glocks. And like ya said on older Gens it's like an automatic reload. I have noticed that on newer Gen5s (MOS) ya have to put much more downward pressure to get'em to function this way though. A replacement slidestop fixes the issue, as I've done that once to see (spare parts are kept for ALL my firearms), but the defect was so widely known on the originals that many CHL/LTC classes in Texas would not let ya use one for fear of an AD and it fails a basic safety function test equated with "push-off" on a revolver.....

When I working in a gun store, many years ago, we saw a lot of glocks get traded in just because people didn't like them but bought them due to brand recognition. I also saw a bunch of LCP's and similar sized pocket 380's. I'd tell people that it's too small for the cartridge it shoots, so it will kick rather hard. They'd buy it anyway, then trade it for something softer shooting after their first range trip. A few months ago, my sister bought her first gun. Her husband wanted her to get an LCP because it was on sale. I told her not to because of recoil and that she should get the same cartridge but in a bigger gun. Her husband told her that 380 doesn't kick much, so she bought it. She took it to the range once and hates it. It sits in a safe and she doesn't carry anything after going through the hassle of getting the permit.

I love my bodyguard 380, I put night sights on it, and the finger grooves and shape of the grip lets me clamp down against the meat of my palm. The lcp felt much less stable. That being said, the trigger pull is heavy double action, it is small, which means more challenging to manipulate the slide, more recoil, and if the finger groves fit my fat fingers well, then they probably feel sloppy for someone with thinner fingers. I can't imagine recommending it to someone as an easy-to-use gun, especially someone who might not control recoil well or has smaller hands. I think people see how small the grip is, how small the round is, and assume it's for small people, not realizing you are only getting two fingers on the thing by design. I bet it was painful for her to shoot, which certainly doesn't help someone who is on the fence about firearms anyway.

I have owned guns for almost half my life. I just bought my first glock. I never liked them much. I bought my g29 because it is a caliber I love (10mm). It has a higher capacity than my 10mm 1911, weighs less, is compact in size, and conceals better. I bought this gun because I take woods walks with my dog 2x a day, and have seen many bear/moose on our walking trails. If someone else had made a comparable 10mm firearm, I would own it. However, I am perfectly comfortable carrying this gun knowing it's history of reliability. I do agree that it may not be the best/safest gun for a green owner, but gun safety should always be established and prioritized BEFORE owning a gun. The "safety" of a gun directly correlates to the human hands it is placed in.

If you feel you need to get a semi auto, get a caliber you are comfortable practicing with (same with revolver) Don't listen to idiots that say you need a large caliber. We put training wheels on bikes, why not guns. A gun is there to make you feel safe. There isn’t a bad guy behind every door. To the layman the danger of accidentally shooting yourself in the leg or someone else is probably higher than the need to draw quicker. Plus you should probably get the fundamentals down before the whole quick draw stuff. I’ve carried an M9 on my hip for over a decade mostly because of my military service and that’s what I’m comfortable with. I’ve thought about getting myself a Glock because trigger discipline is so ingrained in me what’s the point (and the fact you can put one in a MicroRoni) But frankly i can’t justify the purchase when l can get that safety off faster than I can draw it safely, and if I was worried about that safety slowing me down well I can just flick it off. I think we can all agree guns should be as accessible as possible. You and I may not need the safety to be safe but it’s a good place to start when we are teaching trigger and muzzle discipline. It takes a split second for stuff to go really bad really quick. A Glock may not be the best choice for someone without the experience or access to high quality training like we did, and that’s ok. I’d rather someone erring on the side of caution and thinking I need to be more safe, than someone who isn’t ready and thinking I need to shoot more fast.

@@imafuturecorpse2443 I'm not saying someone shouldn't have a manual safety if they want one, I'm saying this situation should raise a flag in the mind of the store employee that the buyer is in need of training. I think you or I or this store owner should recognize that when a brand new gun owner is returning their Glock because it doesn't have a manual safety, it is likely an indicator that they believe a manual safety is a replacement for trigger discipline. As to your comment about training wheels, when a kid tips a bike over the bystanders don't die. There's zero room for poor trigger control or muzzle control. A glock is drop safe because it has a striker block safety built into the slide, it also has the dingus which locks the trigger in the event that something snags the edge of the trigger. The only way a glock goes off is if something presses squarely on the front of the trigger, all the way to the back. It's the job of the person handling it to never let anything into the trigger guard until ready to fire. That means finger straight when it's in your hand, and in a holster that completely protects the trigger guard when it's not in your hand. Just because something like your Beretta has a thumb safety doesn't mean it's suddenly ok to toss it in a drawer or purse with an unprotected trigger and a round in the chamber, or to walk around with your finger on the trigger like it was simply a grip for your pointer finger. Trigger and muzzle control must be 100% absolute, and the safety is not a replacement for them. Again, I'm not saying a manual safety is bad, or that someone shouldn't have one if they want one. What I'm saying is the LGS clerk should recognize that the buyer is probably looking for a crutch they believe will allow them to handle the firearm irresponsibly because "it's ok, the safety is on." Pull the trigger, gun shoots. Don't pull the trigger, gun doesn't shoot. A manual safety doesn't let you off the hook.
@imafuturecorpse2443
2 жыл бұрын
@@freedomlover425 I get what you’re saying. I also agree trigger and muzzle control must be absolute. treat, never, keep, keep, someone who doesn’t know that shouldn’t be handling a firearm, and yes a safety is not a replacement for well … being safe . I guess what I’m getting at is there is a way things should be and then there is what is after you apply the law of “shit happens”. What I was getting at with the training wheels analogy is you want to teach a kid to not rely on the training wheels but they’re there to catch you if you stumble. I get what you’re saying too you don’t want the kid pitching his bike over and riding on the training wheels the whole time because then they’ll never learn to ride. One day that training wheel will break and the kid will shoot themself in the foot. I think really it all boils down to experienced shooters need to be better mentors no matter which side of the fence your on TBH.

Glock is a name that everyone knows and many people ONLY know that name. Glocks got a lot of name mention in movies and television starting in the 1990s when they became synonymous with high tech firearms. To many people, any modern autoloader is a “Glock” the same way that people used to call any photocopy a “Xerox.” Even very old brands like Colt, Ruger, or Smith & Wesson are no longer familiar to younger people. And names like H&K, Sig Sauer, and even Beretta (actually the oldest still existing name in firearms) are not known to most of the general public.

I think most salesmen DID explain the lack of a safety. The customer had no experience to attach that information to, until they began to shoot their new weapon. There is certainly nothing wrong with a Glock. People who are worried about a safety don’t understand how guns work. The Glock has 3 safeties, the main one is in the center of the trigger. Glocks are fairly accurate, easy to operate, are very dependable, and require little cleaning. I don’t own one but I have fired a few, certainly nothing wrong with a Glock. People get into these camps, Pro one brand or other, some say Glock is overpriced, but there are plenty of similar firearms in the same price range. If you make it a point to practice on a regular basis, know your firearm, and follow safety precautions, it’ll last a lifetime and serve you well. The problem with most panic buyers, they rush to the store, buy whatever is left in stock, bring it home and throw it in a nightstand drawer, and there it stays. When you’re under attack is no time to learn how to shoot a firearm.

Yup that's how i figured out I can't shoot a Glock for shit. The one I shoot best is the Sig, probably because of the grip angle. My friend told me "you just need to let me take you to the range for a day and I will have you shooting the Glock like a pro!" My reply was that I shouldn't need to be trained on a specific gun to shoot it well. If I have good grip form, I should be able to just pick it up and shot it well and that was the Sig for me.

If he thought it wasn't bad, to then rent and shoot one. That's the best way, imo, to find out if you'll be comfortable with one. Me? I like Glocks, though I own Sig's. The 19 is sweet and once you get used to the so-called Glock hump, it's pretty nice. Seems whatever you feed them, they go BANG! I like weapons that aren't overly finicky. He didn't like the Glock. I'm not a Glock fan, just my preference. I'm sure they're great for those who love them. But, this can be applied to most Striker Fired pistols. Most don't have a traditional safety. The best safety obviously don't put your finger on the trigger until you want to fire the gun. I know that's obvious and every one here knows this. But a safety contray to popular belief, doesn't make a gun safer. Training make a gun safer.

She's confusing an OFF Switch or a HARD Safety with an external safety. The Glock has 1 external safety and 2 internal safeties. IT IS ONE OF THE ONLY PISTOLS IN THE WORLD THAT ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT FIRE UNLESS YOU PULL THE TRIGGER. Drop it off a mountain, beat something to death with it...run over it with your truck... If you don't pull the trigger, it ain't going off. There's a Trigger safety, a Firing pin safety, and a Drop safety in every Glock. Sure, there's massive amounts of options, but if you want to spend your money on the absoulutely time provenly safe self-defense apocolyptic combat AK47 reliable pistols of all time, includng that you're likely to find ammo and mags for it at nearly every other home, get a Glock. Have some one who knows what they're talking about explain the ACTUAL advantages not just decide promote the "no safety" nonsense. I have always said this: Buying a gun, is like buying a pair of shoes. It's extremely personal. You don't buy shoes someone else tells you to buy. You buy the shoes for the FIT, the FUNCTION, and the PURPOSE of the individual. You should try them on. See if you like them. It may not always work out long-term, but the best ones are the ones you're going to USE MOST. Many people like Glocks, and that's fine if you do, all the power to you. I don't. I personally chose a Walther P99C AS (compact), and I absolutely love it. Had to order it in, but it had all the benefits of a Glock, and none of the drawbacks I didn't like about the Glock. Better ergos (to me). Second (or multiple) strike capability. Striker Decocker. Double-action/Single-Action approximate function, not requiring the slide to be racked to fire. First shot is long and heavy 9lb pull (prevents AD), with crisp glass-wall 4lb pulls after that (fast/accurate). Anti-stress trigger has full travel to prevent accidental discharges when under adrenaline rush, but after first-shot has no takeup weight, and can be pre-set almost to the wall for target-level accuracy shots. All these things mean that I can have situational flexibility, and above all - CONFIDENCE, even without having an external safety. Plus I can change out the mag and go full-capacity pistol. For me, it was the best of both worlds... and no one can tell me a Walther is less reliable than a Glock. Lifetime Warranty doesn't hurt either.

My first EDC did not have a safety and I had trouble reconciling myself after 4 decades of the “safety on till ready to fire, return to safety after firing “ mantra. However, I educated myself and came to terms with it. Now I cannot ever see a situation where I would consider a defensive firearm with a safety. With what I have seen, time is just to precious to consider manipulating a safety in a self defense situation. Trigger finger discipline is a much more effective solution.

That was very nice and their job too. Granted the customer should have some knolege, but dismissing the salesmans job to describe the said firearm is a failure in my eyes. It's called customer service for a reason. Regardless, I have not seen many returns in my area. Most stores have around 5 new and used handguns and about 10 rifles and 7 shotguns. I think the biggest return reason is their credit card payment is due and ability to afford ammo. Not having an external safety for reason of return sounds a bit fishy to me. I usually ask what the intended purpose is, and stress that they try different guns of the size and purpose that are a good fit for them. I do have to say that I have yet to have anyone select a Glock when going through the process. Everyone drills Glocks into peoples' heads, but a lot of people like myself find them uncomfortable and cumbersome to shoot. Others I know have felt the same way without me saying a word about it. Glocks are really good guns, and I'd never trash them. But they're not for everyone, and I just wish people would quit acting like that's the gun everyone must have. I have a lifelong friend in So. Cal who is a die hard Glock guy, and was shocked to find out I don't care for them and have a variety of other makes. In fact he's an NRA certified instructor, and was a bit amused when I was visiting and saw a number of his students had Glocks as well. I'm assuming from his influence. Then one day he called me all excited about a Smith and Wesson M&P. It seems his son is a sheriff's deputy and was issued the M&P as his service gun, and my buddy was surprised at how comfortable it was and how well it pointed for him. At least he was open minded enough to break out of his groove and see there are other viable guns out there. And lots of them. Oddly enough, he now carries an M&P Shield as his EDC weapon of choice.

I just bought a CZ P-09 DA/SA with a decocker. A 1911 style safety comes in the box, so you can convert it to cocked and locked. Striker fired pistols without thumb safeties (it's difficult to find one WITH a safety), are great at the range under controlled conditions. In a stressful situation, the lack of any type of safety could cause an accidental discharge, or accidentally shooting someone who decided to back away.
