My original, stock 89’ e30 M3 is absolutely bulletproof with 84k miles on it. ;) over the past years i had to maybe change door lock actuators, exhaust & muffler, intake & exhaust manifolds, alternator, air-co compressor, clutch, obc, bushings, control arms, brakes, passenger side electric window motor and maybe 87 other small things. So as i said, bulletproof :))

Pro tip, rod bearings have been an issue with just about every three series since the E30. Second pro tip, if you have basic mechanical knowledge and understand how a torque wrench works, you can do the rod bearings yourself without much trouble.

E46 M3...2006. No problems yet but I drive pretty careful. My biggest beef is mileage. I drive short distances and I’m at only 15mpg. If I go on a long drive, 25 miles it comes up to 23 - 25. Wish the gas here in California didn’t suck so bad. Really poor 91 octane if it is even that. Can’t get E85. If only 103 was still available...not.

I own an E36 328i convertible and with some tinkering it does around 220hp. It's been with me for 4 years and 50.000kms (280.000+ kms in the clock now), I did abuse it now and then, a few track days, mountain roads, that kind of stuff, and it never had any major issues. I spent a lot on preventative maintenance such as installing a better (Mishimoto) cooling system, improving body rigidity since it's a convertible, and once I had to replace the valve stem seals because it burned a bit of oil, also rust is a major enemy of these cars (although not as much as the E46s), so that's something to look out for, but other than that, only the usual suspects: brakes, clutch thanks to the occasional heavy usage, tires, suspension elements, that kind of stuff. It runs just as great as it did, and just as great as a low mileage example. I always wonder when will I have anything serious happening to it, but it's yet to come. The only one time it left me on the side of the road was when a brake tube broke and therefore the brakes stopped working, quite a scary one that was, but it can happen to any older car. Looking for an actual M3 coupe now to handle track days better :)

I would say the E46 M3 S54 engine has a notorious Vanos (Like vtec) problem or problems. They need to have the electronic control unit replaced with a strengthened one from Beisain (Company name) as well the exhaust cam bolts MUST be replaced with the up graded versions from BMW and the seals (Kit from Beisian) and lastly the Exhaust cam tabs can break. Once all done the engine is close to bullet proof. (Including the thing mentioned in the video. As well there's some thing called "M-Clunk) which is a noise the car makes at low speeds and is still yet to be diagnosed properly. (Drives me nuts). Great video thank you.
@frontspring1

Greg Wayne so after 18 years no one in the world knows where "M Clunk noise"comes from?
@friguy4444
6 жыл бұрын
I've researched this to no end Google and forums, shops etc and one person thinks it's bushings (Replaced them all while doing the subframe reinforcement plates and getting the mechanic to check the full drive train front to back) yet there are loads of us that have replaced every one with top quality bushings and still "Clunk". Then some say it's the diff not being "Tight enough" so many again have changed out the insides or replaced the diff.... "Clunk". Some talk of it being clutch related (replace everything) "clunk" or drive shaft bearings ..on and on it goes but no one really hits it on the head and figures out what causes this slow speed clunking that seems to come from no where and every where. If anyone has the answer or has another theory please let me know and I'll chase it down. The weird thing is that most of us just give up and drive our cars and ignore it. It doesn't seem to get worse or cause other problems even if we drive our cars like they're stolen 24/7.
@friguy4444
6 жыл бұрын
Valkenier: Dealer said same thing to me as well as many of the online "Experts" in the forums. Our problems may be the same thing. Mine happens at slow speeds like in a parking lot mostly. But it can't be that these cars came from the factory like this. But what is it? Ahh! LOL. If I had a lift I'd hunt this problem down and kill it then tell everyone what it is. Some talk about it being fixed after doing their drive shaft bearings or guibo. I had my everything checked just two months ago when I had my bushings done and my sub frame reinforcement done ($3000.00 Canadian ouch!) and they said it's all good.
@andyfreeman6865
6 жыл бұрын
Greg Wayne I'm thinking it's the input shaft just shifting around and not being graceful about it. I was worried for a while but I don't really care anymore. I'm mad at m3 for letting a broken bolt fall into my timing chain cover, and then eating (and snapping off) a long magnet to reach the bolt. I have not idea what my magnet got stuck on but there's just a little rod sticking up from behind my intake gear. An anomaly about my 2002 M3 is that the rear subframe points aren't cracking yet and I drive the snot out of my car. A few spot welds have broken though, so it isn't flawless.
@friguy4444
6 жыл бұрын
Any Freeman That's pretty nuts. I guess as long as the piece sticking up isn't hurting anything you're good to go. Bad design on BMW's part. But I guess that's nothing new. LOL. I couldn't stop thinking about my subframe so I got it done so I can rest easy not worrying that it's going to open up like a can opener. You might have a good theory with that idea of the input shaft just moving around a bit. Seems like a real possibility. I guess a guy would have to replace the shaft to really know unless it's on the transmission side. Thanks for the idea.

A lot of people (that I’ve let drive my cars) do not handle the E9X chassis well. It is easy to control due to having such a balance and having a flat torque curve, but oversteer and keeping the needle up where the torque kicks in makes people send to start to lose control. I can control myself but people who have driven for a long time tell me it takes a few good tries to toss it around right. The E46 when people drive mine think it’s so easy to just throw around and bang through the gears on the manual transmission, it’s cheaper, easier and more worth the money if you are looking for city driving, idc what anyone says about it not being an everyday driver the S54 is a great power plant. The reliability is somewhat to worry on both of these cars but that’s for anyone who’s worried, which I’m not. I’m aware of the costs of keeping up and am happy to, but for the best bang for your buck. E46 M3. Just find an cheap example SMG and manual swap. If I’m comparing the two, E9X is more updated/refined daily driver. E46 is more of a drivers car.

Despite the sunglasses. I gotta agree. I had a euro spec estoril blue E36 Evolution before my current E46 M3. Would give the E46 back for that machine in a heartbeat. Within a year of me getting rid of it the market value for them had more than doubled! The E46 is more refined and less visceral but it is nothing near the way a sorted E36 makes you feel when hitting the back roads.

No mention that the 'S50B30US/S52' was a completely different engine the 'real' S50B30 that the rest of the world used in the M3? The engines were so different it makes comments on E36 specific engine problems in this video applicable only to North America. The US M3 was definitely an 'M3 lite' when compared to the rest of the world.

I really don’t think it’s blown out of proportion as long as people are honest about the failure rates, which I always have been in your comments as well, I think it’s frankly a public service announcement to spare us car guys from hearing the heartbreaking stories of guys who bought a car but didn’t know & didn’t replace the ims/bearings etc, and lost the car he spent his life savings on. I appreciate this video, and you handled it well, I don’t think we can have enough people shining light on the issues, and unfortunately the only way to correct something that’s been blown out of proportion is to talk about it even more, but accurately, so I guess I agree I just know some people will be pretending these issues aren’t issues or they’re “race cars” and come on, I’m allergic to bullshit of such magnitude lol. And for every person pretending that these issues are natural and you should just buy and not care/pretend it’s natural/nbd, we need people making videos like this to correct the record. Well done as usual.

You’ve missed out the clutch hose failure & probably the biggest and most commonly know Vanos issue on the E36, on the E46 you dismiss the rod bearing issue which is a huge problem on these cars due to the service interval and oil type used, the head gasket issue, the Vanos seals, the oil hub tabs break, the oil disc holes wear, the Vanos solenoid pcb cracks etc......a quick internet search would have bought all these up

so the story with the bearings is that the supplier/ manufacturer made a mistake and didn't give them enough clearance on the crank and engines were catastrophically failing. so bmw done a few things to fix this. created a 10w60 oil with Castrol called tws, changed the bearings and changed the rod bolts to stretch bolts. on the 01, 02 and maybe 03 they had reusable bolts, what mechanics are finding now is that 03+ m3 have more wear than the 01, 02 and they think its the new stretch bolts in the 03+
@Livingmybestlife68
5 жыл бұрын
Sam Trifu that’s the first I ever heard about the 03+ having more engine wear. It blows my mind that BMW would not have checked the suppliers parts before installing them in the engine. I just bought a 2001 E46 M3 Vert with a 6spd Imola red with 119k miles. Had a PPI done and no major issues. Subframe was reinforced and the rod bearings were done also. this guy doesn't have a idea so let me teach you. firstly e30 didnt have subframe issues they were the e36 and e46 all of them not just the M3. e46 m3 suffer from vanos hub tabs snapping off, subframe ripping the boot floor out, rod bearings every 100000 miles and the smg motor dies. also valve adjustments are crucial on all bmw m3 no mater what series. but the way we drive our m3 they deserve to be taken care of. e92 are reliable with only rod bearings every 60000 miles and throttle actuators (cogs) needing to be replaced when they break. if maintained nothing else is really a issue. e36 was the water pump and rear floor being ripped out. e30 id say is the most reliable except now they're a 30yo+ car and the motor costs $15k to rebuild but those engines have been know to go 300000km original engines if maintained

Question 🤨, recently a BMW Technician told me I should have the Dr Vanos cryogenically treated vanos exhaust hub installed. Does anyone have some experience with this upgrade and is it worth it? I am going to replace vanos hub bolts with the high strength ones along with the improved Viton seals but the cryo hub is $1000. Is there an alternative? Labor for this will be $1400. I would do it myself if I could find a good DIY. Any thoughts?

I think your assessment is dead on. I concur, sir. On my 4th M car (E93 M3, E36 M3/4/5, E90 M3, E46 M3) and all have been solid. Just stay up on maintenance with these cars and you won't have many issues. Make sure you buy one with a solid history and a PPI of course.

Funny you had an e90 m and a m 3/4/5. The e36 345 is WHY I wanted an e90 m! Which one did you like better? Maybe it's just nostalgic but for some reason the car I regret selling most is my black on black 345. Just so functional and fun!!
