This is the news. I was sick, physically sick watching the news. They can tell you about all the problems in the world real or made up. But the small efforts dedicated to things that are actually working right, working well and/or is manageable. There's a million things thing could highlight every day. I'm sick. So I'm in my garden, sanctuary recalling the cool stuff that happened to me to day. I'm grateful, appreciative and very aware that I'm working on keeping myself happy and healthy. We need boundaries and discipline to keep up structured and stable as a sentient citizen. But mind food, the plates of soulfood, the foods that make your taste buds smile with approval. This is where people need to go......THERE! Where was "there" for me today? The good routine of saying a thanks that I'm still alive and comfortable then coffee with a small palm sized loaf home made banana nut bread my sweet friend Rena made for me. I'm selling plants and was checking on my ads. Saw someone selling vintage books and comics online. I was curious and I took the bait and reached out to the seller. We ended up have a phone conversation because the few photos I shared of the books stacked at my home was an indicator that I took care of these books. Good conversation. Sounded young. Late teens. These items came from the attic in the garage left by the previous owner. Gave him instructions to look for copyright dates and there were any labels of editions. Editions weren't added to the copyright page till the 1900s and I know this because I just looked it up. Knowledge is good. Was cool explaining a part of book publishing that sparked his interests. We chatted a bit more and he was excited. I gave him a low price sight unseen. We agreed to come to the middle of what we both wanted. It was a long drive but I got to chat with my buddy using bluetooth and staying in the slow lanes. He and talked about our recent trips to the Bay Area. We went for different reasons but both had good stories to tell. We could relate.
Met the kid, Reese was his name. Lanky kid wearing a printed tshirt and he looked like a skateboarder kid. Dyed his short spiky hair with a yellowish look. Retro 80s I suppose. The books and magazines were a bit torn up. I was bummed for many reasons, but was grateful to see right then and there online whether these books/mags had any monetary value so I can keep the ones I want the sell off the others. We came to a lower price than what both of us agreed, but considering the conditions, I was really kind of ready to walk away. He and I chatted a bit. I don't have kids, let alone a son. I would have loved to been a father. Believe me, I tried. But I needed a stable loving fun home to come with a stable loving fun couple. Me and a wife. I explained more publishing facts blended with history. I told him with some matter of factliness(my word. Yes a modern layman's Shakespeare), "If you want to succeed in this life you need knowledge. The only way you're going to get that is through reading and writing. Read anything in history. Just go" Yeah, you'll gain knowledge by media, traveling, other people etc, but exploring the world good and bad, you need to read to take a fuller effect of whatever it is your mind is consuming. I told him that since college, I've either had a dictionary next to my bed where I'd underline the new word I learned or googling it now. Most conversations with people I meet, I usually say "I'm not that smart. I'm just very curious." He's thinking of going to trade school to be an electrician. I said "DO IT! But always be reading and writing".
I wanted to make this video to spatter an idea that even my simple story is news worthy. Your stories are news worthy. Living this life is all about stories. All of it.
