Who's more versatile than Olivia Newton-John? No one can touch her. She's influenced so much, but is criminally underappreciated. She was IT in the '70s through the mid-'80s. She, Streisand and Donna Summer were that era's Trinity. Every straight guy wished to date her, and every girl (and many guys) wanted to BE her. I can go on about her for hours. Once-in-a-lifetime talent that is unappreciated these days because she's a crooner rather than a belter.

I had the privilege to meet her and her sister when she was doing a concert in Copenhagen. I was doing hair and makeup for the concert that included among others Tina Turner, Morten Harkert of A-ha fame. Olivia wanted to have her bangs shorter and I offered to cut them but she told me she had been cutting her own bangs for years, so she ended up borrowing my scissors and cutting them herself. She was very nice and down to earth, and made everyone feel like they mattered. And this was shortly after her boyfriend vanished during a fishing trip of the coast of Los Angeles and was presumed dead.

He was close to 80 yo and I was about 7 yo and he would ask me to put this concert on for him every time he came over cuz he didn’t know how to work the VCR. Sometimes he’d watch the entire thing twice in a row. Ironically his name was Sam (the name of this particular song) and I was named after him. She was beautiful and an absolutely amazing talent. Literally every single song on this concert was amazing. And have you ever seen anyone make a over-the-top mullet look so beautiful?! She definitely deserves her place among the greatest pop/rock/country stars ever!!! Today’s music just doesn’t seem to have the same soul as the music of that era. But for me, the beauty of her voice will always get me. Every single time. And I know darn well, it just wasn't her. She had wonderful teams if songwriters, producers, musicians, and so on. All this time, I just wished the same happiness and joy that she brought to millions, to her to be happy. I appreciate when you explain whatever technique a singer is utilizing because it helps me understand why I had to practice so much as a kid, trying to imitate the voices I heard on the radio. One of my happiest moments was finally being able to hit the ending note of, "Hopelessly Devoted to You." I had no vocal training until I was in my 20s, so everything I did until that point was basically self taught. I actually ruined my voice due to bad technique. I lost my voice entirely (singing and speaking!) for about a year. It wasn't until after many medical tests ruled out anything like growths/cancer that I found a wonderful voice teacher. He helped me unlearn bad habits, establish correct ones, and get my voice back, better than ever.

I started playing trumpet at 10 years old and was always 1st chair and the lead trumpet player. So when I was a teenager back in the early 70s I would listen to Barbara Streisand, Karen Carpenter, and also opera singers like Beverly Sills, Sarah Brightman, etc. to help me with my phrasing with my trumpet playing. This practice was suggested to me by my private trumpet teacher as well and my trumpet playing benefited.

That gave me chills!!! Her ability to float effortlessly through the registers and ranges is unmatched. I had forgotten this song as it never gets played anymore. Thank you for analyzing this classic pop song. I was a huge fan when she had songs on the US Country chart before crossing to pop. Thank you Fil. I really appreciate your videos. It's like attending a master class.

She was my initial crush as a pre-pubescent kid. The voice is amazing. I believe she is underrated, and her name never comes up in the conversation of the great singers

I love Olivia Newton John. She knows how to dial up the vulnerability in her songs. My favorite from her will always be Honestly Love You. As far as Grease is concerned in the 80s it would play once a year on TV. Ever year I watch it. She is an amazing singer... what else would you get from an Aussie.

I must have watched Grease over 100 times. Everytime it comes on I have to watch it. When You're the One That I Want number comes on, every single time, I get the biggest smile on my face. Nothing else comes close to that joy, other than my daughter.

RIP in Olivia Newton-John. My memories of Olivia Newton-John goes back to when I was a young child, I’ve always been in awe of her beauty and voice.

Fil, of course another excellent analysis. This song, you are right, displays her vocal acume nonpareil, as well as her presentation skills, which are so engaging! I am biased because she was probably my first female singer crush! But if I were blind, I would probably still be in love because of her amazing voice! Thank you for this!

Fil, thank you for honoring Olivia and how sadly timely. This was one of her most beautiful heartfelt songs. As you wonderfully pointed out, it's incredibly vocally demanding and she took it to the next level and made it her own and seemingly effortless as she did with everything she sang. Olivia was one of the most special and impactful singers of my life. I first heard her in 1972 when I was a kid and I've been in love with her and hopelessly devoted ever since. She not only has impeccable technique, she sings from her heart and has a unique ability to reache right into the heart of the listener and make them feel like she's singing directly to them. It's impossible not to feel the healing energy of her voice and be moved by her. And underneath all of that was a beautiful genuine caring human being who used her talent and love to help the world be better - right up until she passed. I'm sure Olivia is now leading a choir of angels and is looking out for all of us from above and sending us blessings. And we continue to be blessed by her beautiful recordings, movies, and her cancer foundation and charitable work. Thank you Olivia for bringing so much love into the world. We greatly appreciate how you changed our lives for the better with your music. And you taught us how to be our best selves - even when life gets really difficult. We are blessed to have been touched by your love.

Beautiful. I think this is my favourite song of Olivia's and I've bought her albums since the 70s. I remember her back in the day when she started out with a singing partner, Pat Carroll, who went on to marry John Farrar. I'm very sad that she left us just two days ago 😥 RIP Olivia, you will be missed 😪💖

I love how you have made me feel, Fil, by high-lighting Olivia here. I have never been out of love with Olivia for fifty years now, but you turned up the love of this wonderful singer, and lady, for not only me, but so many others. Honestly, I don't need to look at her to know just how beautiful she has always been; it's that voice, range, and phrasing, that I first fell in love with; that makes her my forever favorite. I smile/smiled reading all the other comments about this AMAZING woman, and some interactions with them. There has always been a huge amount of love and appreciation for Olivia. Olivia, forever!

@@havensmm9308 Thanks for the suggestion. I gave Empress another try after I had initially heard her voice a while back. She is certainly her own, unique self. She certainly loves Olivia, and music. I've been taking a few vacation days so I have caught many of her Olivia reaction videos. All great! Thank you! I have thousands of hours of listening to my favorite singer, and the woman I've had the longest crush on.

Thanks, Fil! I saw her in concert in Seattle, circa 1978. The concert was not sold out at the start -- but about 20 minutes in, I looked around. All the seats, all the way back and all the way up, were filled! She had the audience by that time entirely, chatting up everyone between songs and and even sang to groups of audience members! She got a standing O at the end of "Let Me Be There" -- so her band struck up again and she repeated the final verse and chorus! Amazing concert. Rest In Peace, amazing lady.

Thank you for posting this . While I don’t know anything about the technical aspects of singing, it was amazing to watch your instrumentation do an analysis of her voice and your commentary on what we are listening to. All I can say is my ear is my only instrumentation and they can’t get enough of her, and still can’t. As far as I know this came naturally to her because a have not heard anything about her having any formal voice training. Those of us of the boomer generation were very lucky to have experienced this very talented, beautiful woman. RIP Olivia you will be sadly missed.
