Red Lake is located at an altitude of 980 meters, has a size of 90 hectares and a maximum depth of 10 meters. It belongs to the Bicaz-Hasmaș Gorge National Park. An incipient tourism industry has developed in the place, since thousands of visitors come to this place every year. Trekking, boat rides, mountaineering, gastronomy or rural tourism are many attractions in this area.
The Red Lake is the natural gateway from the Transylvanian side to the imposing Bicaz Gorge and can be accessed from Gheorgheni or from Bicaz via the DN 12C road.
For mountaineers and trekkers it is a true paradise, since the place has imposing mountains and peaks with names as suggestive as the Great Serpentine (Serpentina Mare), the Gate of Hell (Poarta Iadului), the Black Tower (Turnul Negru) , the Altar Stone (Piatra Altarului) or the Murderous Mount (Ucigașul).
Despite its idyllic appearance, the Red Lake has not exactly had a quiet history. It was formed in 1837 when a slope of Mount Ghilcoș fell and apparently there were fatalities, hence the current name of the mountain (Murderer). Regarding the origin of the lake's name, it is due to the fact that the rivers and streams that flow into it cross lands with iron oxide strata. The other great exceptional feature of this lake is the Forest of Petrified Trees in the center of it, a natural phenomenon produced when a small forest that was in the area was flooded before the landslide occurred.
