The U.S. Constitution gives states control over administering elections. There are no national elections in the U.S; even the presidential election is 50 separate elections. This is an example of federalism. Nevertheless Congress might have power to rein-in gerrymandering through consitutional arguments. The Supreme Court has already ruled that racial gerrymandering violates the Constitution, but has resisted efforts to prohibit partisan gerrymandering. In some states voters have used referenda to take redistristricting control away from legislatures in favor of nonpartisan comissions. Predictably, state legislatures seldom relinquish power over redistricting willingly.

In the modern era the 435 cap is ridiculous, the districts should be relative similar sizes across states.

Gerrymandering lets politicians choose the outcome of elections instead of the voters choosing. It must be made illegal. There are mathematically accurate ways to draw boundaries fairly. The Republicans could easily be "wedged" on this issue by asking the people if they want boundaries drawn fairly. In Australia we have something called a "referendum" where the people get to vote on a single issue. Surely you have something like that in USA?
@margaretcaine4219

Here in Australia, the drawing of boundaries is controlled by an independent electoral commission. By giving power to one party or another, you are almost asking for skulduggery.

Actually gerrymander was named after Eldridge Gerry , who was a US vp at death. He was also the governor of Massachusetts in the 1800’s

House is lost for the D's in 22 and beyond. This congress will be the only time when Ds will have the majority. Such a broken system. Gerrymandering is pure evil.

@@goufackkentsaleandrinlebel8826 ? I dont understand. But anyways its fair to say they will lsoe in 2022. In 2024 its a general election so those tend to change by smaller margins. Assuming they win presidency in 2024, they'll certainly lose again in2026 House elections. Obviously its the other way around if Republicans were to win presidency. Party that doesnt have presidency loses seats in midterms

@@vulcanraven9701 things are different this time. Well people said that dems will lose the run offs in Georgia and the won. I think a lot of trump voters will not vote in the run offs. I believe dems will retain the house and expand their majority in the senate

@@goufackkentsaleandrinlebel8826 The Georgia run-off was a different case- first House election maps are designed differently. And in runoffs, Trump at that particularly moment in time did more harm than good to his party. Suspicious phone call, DC plans on Jan6, the lawsuits etc. And perhaps more important was the possibility of a 3rd stimulus. Everyone in Georgia knew up to $2000 in stimulus checks would come if they voted against GOP. Democrats had a crystal-clear message and against particularly unpopular senators. The GOP's refusal to pass more stimulus despite adding trillions in debt from tax cuts and slashing unemployment benefits killed their georgia hopes.

@@vulcanraven9701 i don t think so. I think people in the left especially young voters and minorities will never again take their voting right for granted after what we saw in the trump era. I think dems voters will be more mobilised than trumpers so they definitely have a shot in the 22 midterms.

Kinda. The Paris Climate Accords were based on old data from the IPCC. I think we (globally) need to go further than the guidelines of the PCA. It needs to be reworked and it needs to be made mandatory, not voluntary.

A pity that there is no way any political party would take the initiative to get rid of gerrymandering. It would truly make the House the representatives of the people.

A way to solve gerrymandering would be to have a state wide list based proportional representation system. This would also give third parties a better chance of gaining seats and breaking up the two party system.

Gerrymandering is also the reason why it is becoming more and more difficult to buy a home. The home buying process OBVIOUSLY favors whites with a lot of money. If they are "permanently" located in a certain area by their mortgage obligation, then it's a whole lot easier to re-draw districts to include these people. The districts are also much larger in AREA because all of the RENTERS are crammed into a much smaller space than those who actually own their homes. I live in Jackson WY. If you're not wealthy and white, you have zero chance of buying a home here. They keep normal people priced out of the market at a terrifying level of favoritism and hypocrisy.

In Australia every aspect of elections is controlled by a government department (the electoral commission) which is totally independent of governments. Their role, as well as running elections, includes drawing electoral boundaries. Being totally independent provides a safeguard against gerrymander. It's a model America needs to adopt

This feels very illegal. Districts should be districts, not shapeshifitng. I understand redistributing electoral college, but gerrymandering is bizarre.
